    I thought about that too, and here was my idea:

    Base your calculation of the first say 30 or 45 seconds of data(this stops you from having to download the entire song). Basically decode the mp3,and do a fourier transform on the data, to yeild a set of frequencies. Still following? Good. now compare those to the orginal rougly, allow some room for the physcoacoustic model of the encoder, but overall it should be the same.

    Now on quick examination i can see a couple shortcomings: one, its way more likely to have a false negative than false poistive, and it doesnt take in account any "fair use" qualities( say using it in a parody)

    Just an idea.. comments on its fesiblity would be cool

    and yes.. i know i cant spell :-)

    I belive it was made by some Nullsoft employees, and nullsuft is owned by Time Warner/AOL. I think all they did was shutdown the distrobution of the software, but a couple days after they did a mirror was found of it.

    I dont know if you can remove a license from software, i suppose you could if you were the coyright owner.

    Now IANAL, but i dont think that you can retroactivly remove the license from a product, so the people who have it get the GPL, the others,,, sucks to be you

    On a similar note, ive wondered about creating a SMS (Sytems Managment Server) or Tivoli workalike. SMS doesn support anything but windows(i think) and Tivoli is big and expensive(at least the older versions).
    So what about somthing that can handle remote control of graphical sessions, distributing applications, and inventories of workstations, that dont have to be of a single OS? Any ideas out there?

    Ive used cybercash a little bit, and they provide perl and C bindings to their network. The only slightly weird thing is that they use a 3des encrypted tunnel(i think) rather than like https or a SSL connection, so you run their client software. Im not sure wether or not you need a merchant account, but i dont think that you *have* to have one. Nevertheless, its *may* more professional to see "Joe's Widget Shop" rather than "Cybercash inc" or "31337 Credit Card Services".

    its a great distro(for the poweruser)

    *gasp* it doesnt matter who they are, how old they are, or wether or not they knew they were being watched. They broke the law. Deliberatly. If i deliberatly steal someones car, and someone sees me its not gonna help to say "But i didnt know they were watching me".

    Today in electronics, someone overclocked their TI-86 calculator! Benchmarks put the calculation of 1000 sines about 3.5 times faster than before, making it quite zippy. Aparently all you have to do is to remove a capacitor.... I dont get the overclocking craze. -a

    Busniesses and universities probably be opposed to it, if only beacuse it could be a haven for pedophiles and pirates. Or could dialup users, and cable modem users bear all the load?

    Ive done somthing like this with a Wavlan
    the system consisted of
    -- One Windows NT machine
    -- One Win95 machine
    -- A Linux Box(doing ip masq for inet access)
    -- 3 laptops

    the linux box had a normal wavlan can and ran routed. The wired machines were on a subnet, and the wireless on another. Each laptop used the linux machine as their gateway.
    thats about it.

    is this a manner for people to produce their own videos that can play on any DVD player.

    For the IDE parts hparm has always done the job
    you can tune, and benchmark from the command line.

    I know there has been support to access the fan speeds, and temprature probes.. but you have to *gasp* recompile the kernel for those :-)

    I have a minidisc deck, and i love it. Granted my reasons are prob. different that yours.. i love the editing and titleing features of the deck. I personaly run the Sound Effects for entire plays off them: between random access, awesome editing, and long play time they just rock. You can get a minidisc bundle from sony with a nice home deck and a portable for like 260ish(US).

    Ok. im a linux junkie. given my choice every machine would run linux. but i realized that it wont happen. So i decided one day that i wanted to play with BSD, learn how to use it etc. Anyone know which BSD i should use? i guess im more focused on server systems.. but .. what are the benifits of each? This is prob the wrong place.. but i saw that the FreeBSD 4.0 RC was out.. and i was considering downloading it. Id like to see a discussion of the pros and cons or each bsd on slashdot, i dont think that im the only one.

    have BSD in their name?..

    i do at least. I wonder if their "BSD" uses SRV4

    You *can* make digital connections between a MD and a cd player or computer.You can use a TOSLink (plastic filber optic) or AES/BEU(a standard for digital output) on my deck.
    There are many different brands of players... sony must be atleast sharing some info.

    MD is a great format.
    ATRAC has a better sound quality and can be done in realtime by lower powered equipment.
    Plus soon youll have MD-Data .. 130mb of data to go

    Yes.. sure.. that will happen.. about as soon as M$ realized that their niche is a unstable, bloated OS running on expensive hardware or in a trashcan. I prefer the second. Linux's power (while it is not the only free unix clone) is in its cost and functionality. So that school cant afford IRIX 6.1 for the donated indy2... put linux on it.. need to make a router.. put linux on it.. not start a debate on linux in the enerprise.. but the power of linux is on old and obscure hardware.. and that may include the latest RISC chip. just my thoughts --- rm -rf /* is a good password... just dont type it twice
