    We do this all the time for clients. We get allot of sales by setting up new computers for 85hz refresh rates. Often the user comments that there headache went away with the new settup then they ask us what the difference is. Now everyone wants a high refresh rate. Well allot of cheap pentium systems its impossible to get a decent refresh rate and the monitors dont support it anyway. So they start screaming for new systems and often get them:}

    High refresh rates
    and properly adjusted monitors.
    Teach everyone how to adjust there monitors
    because there isnt any one setting that is best for everyone.
    With monitors mostly you get what you pay for go high end.
    Most of all no florescent lights!!!!

    I do not like being pigeonholed.
    It should be illegal for employers to require
    this type of test.
    I am me I am not some four letter acronym.
    This kind of crap leads to persecution like happened
    after Columbine to anyone that is different.

    Having seen the cluelessness of so called
    mental health professionals first hand
    iv seen that they dont know anything
    and like to play God with peoples lives.

    My answer to a request to take this kind of test
    would be shove it up your stove pipe.

    use it for a while and see if there is an app
    that you like but it needs some work.
    Then contact the peaple working on it
    and ask them what they need.

    this is a win win situation you get a better app
    they get what they need to produce it:}

    and if you dont do anything else make it known
    that your company uses and has had success
    with it. Hopefully on the senior management
    front that is where it will do the most good.
    If a geek askes his boss if they can go with a linux solution and
    the boss has just talked to someone last week about the success your company
    has had with it he/she will be more likely to
    allow it to be used.

    if propery cooled motherboards cpus and memery
    will last allot longer than most peaple think.
    my take on it...
    replace the fans and the harddrives and install linux.
    Its probably time to give them a good gunk removal also.
    Some of our clients are still running 386 novell setups.
    -mostly as a secondary system because the cost of converting the data over to a modern format is $$$$-

    a few reasons:
    1: Drivers sux
    2: no multi os support
    3: todays greatest is tomorrows junk
    4: its way over priced im not paying $400 for a graphics card i can build a computer for that
    5: it rarely lives up to the hype
    6: im not a consumer to be swayed by flashy
    fud filled adds
    7: my 4 systems fill my needs

    I sent in a ask slashdot on this but havent got a response.
    Here is my take on it why dont we have a
    webserver distro a ftp server distro a samba distro a gamers distro.
    Your sayin huh? about now.
    Think about it,,,
    need a file server grab the samba linux distro
    install it run some simple settup scripts and
    your done, Get some of the samba develpers to help with the
    initial tuning and settup of the distro.
    Cut out everything that isnt needed.
    Why?
    simple it would be more secure take up less space
    and be faster to settup.
    and its tuned with more tuneup tips provided by the pros.
    This has been done for routers and firewalls,
    How about moving the idea into other services?

    other option linksys router iv used both
    if you need a small hub buy the 4 port switch version
    it isnt allot more than the 1 port and
    not allot more than a decent hub.

    I prefere a linux box it is more versitile
    and i trust its security more than the
    closed source linksys.

    you have a point...
    but thats true of any os.
    a floppy/cdrom based settup is just another step closer to being secure.
    If your webserver has a hole in it you have worse problems than what
    firewall your running.
    Im curious there is a shutdown executable
    in bin or sbin of the distros i
    looked at there isnt in floppyfw
    I will have to attach a keyboard to my firewall
    and see if shutdown -h now works without
    shutdown being installed.
    As far as dos attacks if you dont have your routers
    configured properly to deny them your screwed no matter what os you run.
    If your referring to the windows oob attack that
    can be caught at the firewall
    level on windows or at the router.

    security isnt a one step process you
    have to do the whole settup with security
    in mind it is no stronger than the weekest link.

    have no exploitable services on the firewall box
    install tracking software
    go one step beyond and use a floppy firewall settup see

    that way there is no way to save permenent changes
    if it was comprimised .
    The key being nothing running to
    exploit and no tools or room for tools if it is.

    could even be done using winblows problem is its allot harder to strip
    windows down of all unsecure services/software.

    Are these going to be worstations or servers? What type of servers? on workstations with default installs im always running out of room in / ..as far as swap goes settup a test box with the configeration you want monitor memery usage and load it down 2x the load your expecting and set your final swap to 1.5 times this size. For logs it sounds like your setting up a dedicated machine which is good so use as much space as you have. The worst thing you can do on a server is do a default install of most linux distros install the least amout of stuff possible then add what you need. Then on your test system see how much room each one uses and add a little to each for future upgrades and take it from there. my box? 3gig / ~7gig /home 128meg swap not ideal but it works

    You said they were in talks with the author wait and see what comes of those talks. If they do go ahead with trying to rip the author off. Then you have to do what will allow you to sleep at night. What would i do? start looking for another job I have found out the hard way that a company that rips one person off tends to do it to everyone that has contact with them eventualy. On my last day id contact the author and let him/her know what was being done.

    um let me tell you this im basing this on real world experence. We do allot of consulting work for Law offices and lawyers for the most part dont care about computers. They are also the worst customers to have if something goes wrong because 1: there always in a hurry 2: it dont cost them much to sue your butt off 3: they are the worst one for demanding that you run over because they turned java off and cant play there web games at yahoo.com and dont care that your in the middle of trying to restore a server for a customer that is losing thousands of dollars an hour but is too cheap to put rebundant servers in or replace there 486 netware server that has been dieing for 6 months so imho anything you can do that keeps a program they can mess up away from a lawyer the better,,, hence use web based email

    email clients on the desktop are a nightmare on any platform to support.
    Im about bald from having to support 500+ installs of outlook lol.

    Advantages of webmail...
    =central point for scanning for viruses ect.
    =central point for security.
    =less support needed instead of having to run around to
    each machine to fix things all the time you have =one point to manage
    =ease of adding and removing users
    =Users like the ability to bring up an email on another machine when
    they are working in a group setting.
