Want to impress the pointy heads talk about more cores. Throwing more cores is not the solution to all problems and actually opens up a whole bunch of new ones. I wish that more attention would be spent to solve real problems rather than trying to be buzzword compliant.
x86/AMD64 is overkill for many server functions. It will be interesting to see if chips appear optimized for different functions. For example hardware sql accelerators or massive i/o for file serving. Since many hardware raid controllers are nothing but ARM cores anyway it would be interesting to see multiple cores, some used as RAID controllers and some more advanced cores for the os and file serving with a 10GB lan controller all on one chip. Add power, drives and Ram and have a killer file server.
Is it free or for profit? It can not be both. Either release it for free for the good of mankind and be happy or make it commercial and try and make money. If you try to make money off a free book you will be sadly disappointed.
They only failed me once and that was because a head crash took out the part of the physical disk the file was on that my client needed recovered most.

I have interviewed people for network jobs and I can find out more about them in 5 minutes talking to them than a 3 hour written test. I do not want someone who is good at taking tests I want someone who can actually do the work.
One question, I asked was what was the strangest network problem you ever ran into.
Then I tell them my strangest and and ask how they would solve it. How did I solve it? I looked the answer up using google. The one that chuckles and says I do that too is the one most likely to get the job.
I want someone that knows how to look for answers not someone who thinks they know everything.
same where i work except they will pay for cert tests if its something that looks good to the clients.
Also will pay for stuff like condex,hours but not travel, but the person going must give a presentation and full report on anything they saw/found that might be important to the company
I work in the trenches providing IT services to small and mid-sized businesses that cant afford IT
departments. This is the first article I have seen
that even comes close the matching the reality
i see every day in the business world. But you missed a few things for the most part we find our customers extremely paranoid about thier data
and they will not go for an outside company holding the keys to that data. When your family depends on your small business to survive and it isnt a matter of I can get another job tomorrow
you tend to be less trusting of anyone bigger than you.
I am currently working on a project that involves
crating a database driven app. My cut is 50%
and im happy. My boss found the job made the sale
and does most of the meetings. If i had to do the above then i would want a bigger cut. Fyi
im classified as an outside contractor for this and pay my own taxes on it. I would not consider anything less then 50% fair if im the only coder working on it.
In all the examples you gave all took time to evolve once they were "discovered".
The net and to some extent the pc havent had enough time to evolve yet to effect us the way some of the other stuff you mentioned.
I think that telivision and radio do not belong on a list of things that humans cant live without.
I can and do.
The printing press was a much greater inovation.
Give the net time and it might be as important to
me as the others. It has to evolve allot more to reach the status of the others.
Lets look at what the net does that is new:
-email == fax/snail mail/phone/fedx
-streamin media == radio/tv
-voice over ip == phone
-search engine == card catalog
-newgroups/irc == water cooler conversations/conventions
Not much that is new....
But it has changed the way allot of people
live and work.
As a tech working for a consulting firm
that often gets called in on business
critical outages i think the most
important and hardest skill iv had to learn
is how to handle people in a stressfull
situation. With fellow puter geeks it is
easy but 99% of the time it wont be a
puter geek your dealing with.
I have seen some awesome techs that were
no good in the field because they didnt
have the people skills needed to deal
with non-technical people in a stressfull
situation. I have also seen some lousy
techs that get good reviews from clients
because they have a good "computer side"
manner.

an electronic controlled pro grade r/c servo is prior art to all 3 of these claims. They have been around for a few years. Older servos just use a potentiometer the newer ones use something simular if not identicle to what they claim to patent

new guns are too well made.
Battlefield tolerences were there for a reason
and is why the ak47 is so reliable. Due to its "loose" tolerences it isnt known for its accuracy but under any conditions it is one of the most reliable weapons made. Same for the old goverment
model 1911s m1s and m14s. Military weapons need to be reliable and tough first before accuracy can be considered. But the perfect scores on the 600 meter range look good on the books to the brass.
It doesnt matter that such accuracy plays heck with reliability as long as it makes the brass look goodnew guns are too well made.

problem with that is that a real book carries more athority than a printout,,, It is too easy to dismiss a printout as the rantings of some loser.
It is kinda kewl having these morons call
and ask for help with aol because they heard im into computers still. Telling them sure for $110
an hour and hearing them gasp is sweet revenge:}
try a apc smart-ups it will clean up the power.
as far as rf goes i find allot of the time improving the ground will help allot. Just beacause the socket has provisions for 3 pins doesnt mean it is actualy grounded to anything an ac volt meter will tell you if it is,,,,

This would only be valid if it was a comparison of identical twins raised in the different environments.

I have turned down several jobs over it.
Who would have thought you actually had to plan a network rather than just throw some hardware in place?

The cost of doing it right pales in comparison with not doing it right and something happening.
