Actually... they did grep the drivers...
and found references to "uake 3" which when changed to quack 3 caused the benchmarks in Quake 3 to slow down.
It would be nice if the people who submitted these stories read them before commenting on them.
The slant of the HardOCP story is that optimizing for the programs people are running is a perfectly reasonable concept.
The fact that Quake 3 is used to benchmark video cards just confuses the issue. Really, isn't that part of why we have separate benchmarking programs in the first place?
(If the driver was optimized for 3dWinMark200? whatever then there would definitely be a problem.)
You gotta like someone with the cajones to make
two contradictory statements one right after
another.
He insists that their tech preserves "fair use" rights and then says the only wait to use
the copies you make of the music is to keep the original cd in your machine.
Now THERE's a useful redefining of a copy. Hmmm.. if it doesn't work without the original cd around then it's not a copy is it? It might as
well be a Windows shortcut to the cd drive. It would save space.
Yeah, the results of the test are quite interesting. Of course, you could buy 2 or 3 Athlons for the price of one P4 and have them
waiting around for when your heatsink/fan fails...
(grin)
Heh... I remember that... "incident" Bradley put
a lot of effort into trying to get someone fired
over a harmless prank.
Details:
Bradley Kuhn did a lot of preaching about how you
should never refer to Linux but only to GNU/Linux.
Apparently in a very "in-your-face" manner.
Somebody who was running the mailing list some of
these discussions happened on decided it would
be funny to set up a script that would prefix GNU/
onto the word Linux whenever it appeared on the list.
Unfortunately, he screwed up and it appended GNU/
onto EVERY word in the messages.
Bradley then proceeded to attempt to convince the ISP that the guy worked for to fire him for
being an evil/unethical sysadmin. and was persistant about it.
That's because you aren't looking in the right places.
go to www.webscriptions.net.
Baen books is publishing all their new books in
electronic format with no ridiculous copy protection. Why? Because they realized that
when you read the first book of a really
good series you want to go buy the other ones.
Sure worked on me...:)
Of course, if you hate scifi and fantasy then your
out of luck...
Heh... well I've got a working 3645-3650 machine also.

Grrr... Ok... am I the ONLY one who heard that
long speech about the scientist discovering that
the power that animates living things was what they were using to power their shield and guns.
Hmmm... sounds like an explanation for why shooting the ghosts worked just fine... eh?
FWIW, My wife and I went to see this movie yesterday and enjoyed it quite a bit. Neither of us has ever played a FF game. (Though not for lack of trying on my part... damn FF7 on the PC ahem...)
It was quite a beautiful piece of eye candy with with some surprisingly slow moving people in it (grin).

This comment is SO incredibly offbase that it's hard to believe you said it with a straight face.
50 years ago you could buy handguns or rifles and walk home with them with no age limits or strange
responses from passers by. And they were incredibly cheap compared to today's prices. (Even
accounting for inflation)
for example. in 1951 you could mail-order direct
from Sears a JC Higgins.22 caliber rifle for $12!
Direct to your door with no background check or anything... can you find easier availability than
that now?

Guess what... it makes no difference. There's no legal gun ownership in Japan and guess what... their rate of gun crimes has been steadily climbing.

Glad to see someone else noticed the general silliness of that statement. He included firearms in his list of causes. Wouldn't it have been better to list WHO was using them to hurt children? Oh dear... there I go again... trying to use logic in a discussion of this type...:P
Never claimed my funds wouldn't be effected by
flucuations(sp) in sector equities.
By their very definition index funds will be effected by the stock market. That's the point of
an index fund. It reflects the overall market.
If you're willing to put your money in an index fund and ignore the day-to-day bullshit put out
by people who have a vested interest in getting
you to do lots of trades(brokers...) for a decade or two you'll be just fine.
Can you say "dollar cost averaging", boys and girls?
Funny... I've been a Foolish investor since
I started paying attention to the stock market
a few years back and frankly, the Nasdaq's
rollercoaster ride had no real effect on me.
I'm still on track to retire with more than
I'm likely to ever need. Just quietly investing
5k a year(to start) in an index fund.
It also helps to remember the fact that he/she was dealing with a population who knew they could get the lumps/bumps dealt with for free and with little hassle.
Contrast that with the real world where going to the doctor involves insurance hassles and time hassles that can easily prevent someone from dealing with something like a probably benign cyst.
I just wanted to publicly thank Mr. Billington for standing up those of us who aren't a member of the elite. He is bravely protecting our ability to read some of those precious, decaying tomes that only the Library of Congress contains. It would be a terrible thing if those disintegrating copies of various works were saved and made accessible. I mean really, someone might actually get to READ THEM!!!
I think what we are seeing here is the opinion of someone who is nothing more than a high level bureaucrat with no idea what is really going on in his library.

Not to detract from your attempt at fearcasting
