    Emotionalism and conjecture.

    Maybe if kids were exposed to healthy sexuality young, they wouldn't feel the need to have these compulsions as adults.

    I know of no documented proof for this, in fact, I believe that there is proof to the opposite. Witness Japan.

    So one person has a bolt of lightning against all the reasoned arguments you can throw at him. You know, the sad thing is, he'll probably win.

    I'd like to see even *one* argument about this issue that does not invoke:

    • religion
    • Conjecture
    • Misinformation
    • Emotionalism
    • Utopianism

    These people are BENT on forcing their agenda on others, and they're not going to be happy till we're all good christians being controlled by the big Brother of the fundie thought police.

    I'm not a cosmologist, but I thought it was just the residual radiation from the big bang, in the microwave range because it is at a uniform 3 degrees above zero k?

    The redshift only has to do with moving objects. this residual radiation is something else entirely.

    That *would* make it the most distant object in "the known universe", or more accurately, "the observed universe". The "known universe" now has a maximum extent of 13 billion light years.

    Not if it's curved in a four-dimensional topology.

    Does the surface of a balloon have a center? Nope. You have to go below the surface to find the center. One theory is that the universe is like the surface on a balloon.

    OK, I just have to say this - and I have the karma to burn, so...

    Why can't you guys do even some basic proofreading of your stories? So far, out of the past, maybe, 20 stories, probably 18 of them have had SOME kind of error in them. I'm not expecting perfection, but Rob, you said yourself in "Geeks in Space" that you are now a journalist. Journalists check their facts and journalists proofread.

    I mean, come on. You can make a few mistakes here and there, that's fine. I'm not going to go screaming about every single one. But, really.

    BTW, Who's jimjag?

    That's priceless.

    I remember those. I was in elementary school at the time. At about the same time our drill-seargant (literally) music teacher, Mr. Curtis, decided we were going to put on a "cabbage patch kids" play.

    My very first computer was a TRS-80 Color Computer 3. I also had a VIC-20 and a C-128, before I got my first.... macintosh. Yes. Macintosh. 1994.

    I had lots of fun with it. I used to disassemble the VIC-20 firmware by dumping hex and translating the codes. Figured out a lot of cool stuff that way :)

    And it's "tangent". But it's cool.

    Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm 24, the 80s are just like yesterday, and I find it real hard to believe that all that time's already gone by.

    I do remember the 80s, or at least parts of them, but it seems like a distant memory now. I think I'm starting to feel old. :(

    Yeah, when I was a boy, we didn't have an Internet, we just had PCs we used in the library... no network... 5 1/4 inch drives, little black and white macs. No windows, all dos based. Wow, and I remember that.

    Scary.

    Whitney Houston. The Bangles. Martika. Sigh.

    Nah, I think if they were going to use a computer, they should use an Apple. After all, it's essentially the first PC... and set us on our way to where we are now. Computer-bound hermits with no life ;-)

    Yeah... my late less-than-teens and early teens were in the 80s. I'd have to agree with you there. Nothing worth remembering cept for cheesy movies, cheesy rock (though it's not much better now) and loads and loads of greed.

    Yeah, and the biggest confusion from me, was I came from Toledo, OH, where a suburb was named "Oregon", and it was pronounced the *shudder* other way. So I came here and... hard dose of reality.

    It's Or-i-gin (hard g), not Or-e-gon. One local news station had a lot of fun showing outtakes of Pamela Anderson Lee (or someone similar) trying to say it. She couldn't figure it out for the life of her.

    The difference is the emphasis on the syllables. Phonetically, it's Will-AH-mette as opposed to Will-uhm-ETTE. Cept the "AH" is more of an EH sound). Will am met.

    Sorry, I'm a stickler. One would think that the editorial staff should do at least the basic proofreading.

    Hey... the correct spelling is "Willamette". Named after the main river running through Portland.

    And in case you're wondering, the correct pronunciation is "Will-A-mette", not "Willa-METTE".

    Sorry. I live in the Portland area. When I first got here, I pronounced it the second way, and was set straight real quick.

    It is 9:34 PM EST. There are about 140 comments on this message. Fully 90 percent of them are very, very lame spam, not even trolls.

    When it's in moderation, they're amusing, or at least tolerable. This is just ridiculous though. The slashdot people should think about doing something about this and PRONTO. I like slashdot and I don't like the thought of having to go elsewhere.

    Where has all the intelligent life gone?
