Yes, exactly the same way I got snow crash.
I was about 12 or so when I first read it, but
the lack of age didn't hold me back from
enjoying the book to it's fullest. Very, very
good. Also, as a side note, specture VR kina
sucked, but Was worth getting snow crash for.
Since then, I have had to replace my copy about 7
times, and shown about 50 people the light...
(or let them read the book :)
Hmm, never used lynx to post on slashdot before, kina wierd...

Yes, I have the same 'feature'. I drink about 2 liters of MT.Dew a day, If I don't have a constant supply going into me at regular intvals, I get terrible headaches, very much like a migrane. But, It dosn't get me hyper (Though I am hyper naturealy(Even without the caffene)).

Also, I have to take much more than the regular dose for medication to take effect. I was in the hospitle on time having some major surgury, and I kept waking up from the anstesia...realy confused the doctors (not to mention me)

But, I also suffer from another wierd 'feature', pain dosn't have much of an effect on me, I never use hotpads, quite often slice myself open while splicing wires (and don't notice till I see blood all over the project), and lots of other wierd things. I have also yet to recive more than a minor discoloration from pulling stuff out of the oven with my bare hands, no pain...but, I do know it's realy hot. My mind just goes "Hmm, this pan is hot", and doesn't worry about it, or give the standard impulse to drop it, or move realy fast (worked out great while I was working at a pizza place!)

Not to start a flame war, but Why can't people just keep thier systems up to date, without reinstalling the whole thing? I'm still kina running redhat 5.0. But, I've kept everything quite up to date, actualy, I use tarballs more than anything (I like to compile my own stuff) I've had terrible luck with rpm's. And to boot, I don't realy care for the way redhat does a lot of the stuf...Heh...I was a slackware user for for about 4 years before I got redhat (got it due to a HD crash, and I needed a distro fast). Also, as a note, the only programs I use much, are netscape, emacs, and rxvt. (major apps anyway) Aside from that, keeping the rest upto date is easy.

Just got netscape 4.08 last night :)

That is true...one of the reasons I run in console on my notebook (other than the fact that X is slow with 8 megs of ram). But, It's still not as good, as being able to just look. Luckely wyse terminals are cheap...I think I paid like $25 for most of mine...a couple where just free.

Too bad they are all back, and green...I would kina like color sometimes...mostly for BitchX...crackrock, ya know?

  7. Various things (including the loo, and my father) on The Rise of Technology / The Fall of Trees? · · Score: 2

Ok, first off, I like to read in the bathroom. Mostly while taking a nice hot bath. Read many a fine novel in there. Not to mention various users manuals..But, oddly enough, I use my PalmPilot for this. I've got 4 megs of ram on it. So I can store quite a bit of information. And, the nice thing, is I can use it even if the light is not goodenough for paper. Thank the gods for backlighting. I fear droping it a bit, but not too much. I keep a backup, and water won't fry it too bad...probably just make me restore a backup, and take it apart, and clean it. Done that enough times already.

So, in general, I *NEVER* print anything off...heck, I don't even own a printer...I have 6 computers...monitors stacked/side by side...2/3. This works very well for comparing odds, and ends. I am still a bit dumbfounded how people can get by with just one monitor. Have slashdot up on one, icq on another, irc on the next, emacs the next, and one for mp3's...(note, most of these are dumb terms(Wyse baby!)).

Now, on the other hand, my father (who will remain anonymous), has a computer I put togehter for him (quite nice), and with it, a digital camera, scanner, and a nice printer. He prints off everything you can imagine. Gets email...prints it off, and deletes it (he doesn't want to fill the 12gig HD:). Same thing with pictures he scans in, or photos he takes with the camera. It's pretty cheesy in my opinion, but, he is so set in his ways. I don't know how to fix the probelm. Oh, the other thing he does, is when he saves a file, he saves to disk(yes, floppy). He has stacks of disks laying around bigger than I did when I was a kid (I only had a floppy drive on my first computer).

As much as I hope for a paperless office, I don't expect to see it at this rate...except in my own home...

  8. Re:Miranda - not that important on The Diamond Age · · Score: 1

What was subversive about how Miranda "raised" her? She just read the damn book every day and got emotionally
involved. Nell didn't even think about Miranda's existence until the book was almost over (during her discussion
with Hackworth when she finished the Primer). It made Miranda's importance seem like one of Stephenson's
    afterthougts.

If she would have had random ractors rasing her,she wouldnot have become so emontinly envolved.

  9. Miranda on The Diamond Age · · Score: 1

Oddly ehough, Miranda was a very inportant charecter in 'the dimond age', without her being theier, a lot of things would have turned out diffrently. In Nell's devolopment, she was a key factor.

One o the points this book makes, is the power of subversiveness. Miranda subversivly raised nell, witout knowing (till well after she started).

Just wanted to make a note of this :)

Sadly enough, I was forced to go through the perverbial rat-race of school. Constantly teased, tomented, and such for being a computer geek. Ostrasised by the princial, and others of that level, but had a couple good teachers that reaslized what I could do. That made it almost bearable.

The guidance councler made a very interesting error when I reached 7th grade. At first I resented it, but after the fact, am very glad. I was put in the -=specal ed=- classes for most of the things I was good at, math, sicence, and such. But the way the specal ed teacher went, was great, she gave you the materels, and let you go, helping as needed. I finished about 3 grade levels of work in the first year. Realy a pointless matter, but I was actualy allowd to move at my own pace. Not that this helped with dealing with the bloody jocks, cheerleaders, or teeny-bopers. But being picked on when you are a martial artist is a dangerous thing...for the asalian. Solely used for defence 1 time, but one time was enough.

I eventualy was put in suspension for an undetermend peroiond of time for getting some evedince that would have put the pricipal out of a job, and dicided that hell, I don't need this place. And, at 16, quit school, and, got my GED six months later. (the leagal time limit) Since then, I have been a hard working individual...mostly. With the job I have right now, I make about 25k a year, not much, but I do live in Nebraska...

Now, being 21, I have yet to actualy meet anybody I went to school with, and on the rare occasion I notice one of them passing by, they don't notice me...I like that.

BTW: I have also been wearing a trench coat for years.

Also, in the USA, you can buy ammo at any age. And zip guns are pretty easy to make (a bit dangerous, but easy). This is another route they could have taken. (althouth IMHO zip guns are rather inefecent, and pose a greater threat to the user)

IMHO, every amarican should carry a firearm, it keeps those who would use them for evil reasons from acting out, or, if they do, something can be done about it quickly.
