Not that much. Macs are pcs, you know. Quite good ones, actually. Problem is this glowing apple logo on their backs - you see it and then you think about what's wrong with microsoft as a whole regarding this - no matter hp notebooks or whatnot just plain suck, or sony ones are even more expensive than apple's, especially if you ask them to have one with a plain windows installation, that is somehow MORE expensive than the one which is 30% slower because of sony and their partners' bloat.

Parallels? VMWare? What are you talking about. Macs run on intel processors with ddr memory and SATA hard drives since some six years ago - they run windows just fine. Format the damn thing, install windows 8 on it, and the only embarrassment comes from knowing that none of the companies that sell the hardware which comes with Microsoft's software bundle are coming close to make a portable machine as good as the only one on the market that does not come with windows.

Actually, microsoft sells mostly software. Pretty much all their software for pcs runs on macs, right from windows on. They could use apple machines, with windows on them, or even mac os, provided they still use microsoft Office produts for mac on them.

What would be shameful would be to see MS sales people giving a presentation using apple's Keynote. On a hackintosh dell running Lion.

Of all things, you went to choose the Republic of Ireland's most known symbol to say that is UK?

Ok, I know, uk, england, northern ireland, great britain, commonwealth, queen's territories, all this crap IS confusing. But let me get you a couple of things straight:

    - Ireland is an Island. On it, there are two countries. One is Northern Ireland, another is Republic of Ireland;
    - Northern Ireland is part of UK, commonwealth or whatever. Its currency is the british pound. Its capital is Belfast
    - Republic of Ireland is an independent country which today has nothing to do with uk. It is part of the Euro zone. Its capital is Dublin. DUBLIN THE CITY WHERE GUINNESS IS MADE (mostly)
    - There is some animosity between the Irish and the British, to say the least. What you just said might be considered offensive in there.

Republic of Ireland is not the most resourceful country on the planet, granted. But two things you can bet they are very proud of: Their Guinness and their Jameson's.

I don't know about your area, but in CS, one year is just TOO LONG. That's why we publish in conferences, and after a bunch of papers on the same topic, we get all together and publish in a journal - mostly because it gets good on your and your boss' curriculum.

What people tend to forget is that most conferences are organized in tandem with those publishers. Want to have your research presented in some conference important to your area, where you can meet your peers? Be prepared to have your article automatically published by elsevier or others.

And about the professors and postdocs, actually, they do care a lot. Not that one likes it - no one likes free work - but still, we do it because we love what we do. And we do out best, in the hope that when we sent our articles for peer review, the same happens.

If it were for the money most of us wouldn't be in the academia, anyway.

if it was so easy to make a tablet as good as the iPad for even the same price, the android ones wouldn't cost as much as it (as the galaxy tab) - same with the galaxy phones.

and as far as I remember, the HP touchpad was released costing the same as an iPad, but it flopped because it was a piece of shit. I know because I am writing this in one.

if you are comparing the kindle fire with an iPad, you have no idea of what you are talking. If you are comparing a galaxy pad or the Motorola, then you will see that they cost as much or slightly more.

stop being an open-source dumb. I love open source and I'm patching my touchpad myself. But it was expensive for 200 bucks (in Europe), and absurd at the same price as an iPad. HP realized that soon enough. It would be even more embarrassing to stay trying.

Some homework here is needed. In your argument, who uses 5 out of the 7 ODMs to manufacture their gear is an original designer and apple, who has been developing not only their own designs since forever, but even developing the basic materials and production process, is a marketing company.

I could cite a lot of things, but some not that old examples are the glass screen, the unibody, the glass trackpad (and the trackpad itself) and the magsafe. Granted, they probably don't manufacture anything anymore, but from that to say they lend the Chinese to make their designs is just bullshit.

sorry, was not logged here on the touchpad. I mean it, really. Even for a windows machine, today a MacBook pro is a way better choice than the Sony. Sony used to be good hardware two decades ago. Now is just shit. You are better with an hp , which is admittedly shitty, for half the price of a vaio , and then replace it earlier.

or stick with the mac os and have some thing adware-free from the beginning, with free ide, compiler and a lot of other software that is actually useful.
