Yeah a few years ago, I took a broken machine into a tech shop and told them that I was using a key of a broken box at home, I was shocked to find out that i wast allowed to do that. What surprised me was when I got a new laptop, it came with an XP key stuck to it, but the tech guy asked me if i wanted xp/vista, I went for vista and the guy just stuck it on there and registered for me (he was MS certified too).
Also if you pay for the keys, why the hell cant you download CDs anywhere, i was FORCED (kicking and screaming i tell you) to go with ubuntu on my old laptop because, my dad didn't get the Acer disk (or lost them) and it was impossible to find one to install XP from (even though i had a license)
BTW what is defined as the machine for a desktop? is it just the motherboard, obviously upgrading the motherboard will invalidate the OEM warenty, but does it invalidate you license too?
Why sell it? If i was in the trade of making silver, and then one day i buy a magic pot that makes gold, id keep the bot, let it cary on making gold, and id keep making silver. This has the bonus that if someday i fancy making silold or gilver i can.
Plus ebay doesnt go great with skype but paypal does, why dont they just keep sticking paypal to stuff. Online auctions were nice, but there no point putting all your eggs in the one basket, gumtree/facebook, is becoming a convenient way to get rid of junk without the haste of ebay, on-line shops are getting competitive, and froogle is getting good at finding what you want. Ebay isnt going to die but it wont keep growing forever. There is plenty of areas where knowledge from ebay would be useful in setting up a new project with skype & paypal. For example Renting rooms & flats, here in London, nobody wants to go through estate agents (because they're all ****s), but gumtree still looks and feels unprofesional, the search isnt very good and putting your phone number on the web isnt the best idea. solution an ebay like listing site that you link to a skype number, and has the bonus that tenants can set up a paypal direct pay so you dont even have to collect rent. they have three great products, they dont need to link them.
Isnt this how microsoft always ship office, you have to pay $200 every x years so that your documents can be read by the rest of the people in your company. But now there using a standard they need a new model, so it'll be $20 every x months. (it also allows them to keep messing with the competition now theyve got so good at decoding.docs)
do the maths. assuming that mac users are ½ as careful (or twice as stupid) they would need to scam 9 times as much money out of every mac user as a windows user. We know macs are expensive but you dont need to be 9 times as rich to own one.
Dear god you were that stupid, at least here in UK we realised it was bullshit before we went in, just a shame too many people didn't care, and the government did whatever bush wanted anyway.
Don't you think the world would be better off if the USA had business office overseas, rather than troops. What if they went further, instead of using the CIA to manipulate foreign countries, why not spend the money on actually keeping good taps on people, without actually manipulating anything, who knows they might actually catch Osama, and we can finish this crappy war on terror already!
I find it wierd that, people all over the world are happy to speak out against guantanmo but, until somebody points out that stuff thats 10x worse is happening in china nobody really said anything.
Tbh if china wasn't dumb enough to think they could pull of an Olympic games without international scrutiny, do you think anybody would even be talking about Tibet?
I can vouch for that, having seen the mobs. For anybody at the London torch protest it was clear which side was needing more police attention. Excluding pranks ofc (but as one protester but it, "its just human nature, when you see an eternal flame, you just want to try and put it out, the same way that if you are surrounded by stuff thats not on fire, you want to burn something, oh is it just me" ) the Chinese simply tried to out shout, and threaten the pro-human rights/Tibet protesters. The only time i say the police intervene was to move the Chinese away before things turned ugly.
Actually i was wondering if you could do that, because most of the Americans smart enough to study abroad are nice amicable people, but there's just something about the south that keeps me from liking them. If you were two separate countries, maybe we could be friends.
More seriously what is it that keeps the blue states that stand for freedom, for forming some sort of United Blue States of the Unites States of America (or NAMBLA) coalition and taking action to defend your freedoms from the less desirable states (and more importantly whoever they can vote in next time theres a bush running)
The problem I am having is that one side claims that these things are happening, the other side claims that they are not a) side claims its happening b) claims it isnt a) asks for proof b) claims it isnt a) if isnt happening then let us look b) claims it isnt a)...
when somebody refuses to even try and give proof, like letting international bodies into the country, or actually investigating the Tibetan government "who are behind it all", or answer question with anything other than "its western propaganda", or show the patents your violating ( hey this is slashdot i dont want to let the side down by not bashing ms ) Its clear that thier lying.
btw you can drop the "self-appointed" no leaders ever provide non propaganda versions.
The difference between Tibet and Quebec or Basque regions in spain, is that those taking part in non-violent protests in spain/canada dont get attacked. The solution to Quebec, Eta & Tibet is simple, openly go in and give the people of a region a choice, do you want to separate, then respect their choice. If it works in northern Ireland it'll work anywhere.
The same reason that under ubuntu, an upgrade to x will tell you to reboot, if you start the system up clean, there's less chance of something going wrong (actually theres the same chance, but there's a chance that it will fix itself)
Im not sure how modular windows is, under linux, only a kernel upgrade actually requires a reboot, It doesn't make much of a difference unless your doing it manually tho, the OS cant just reboot the networking stack without taking out all programs attached to it, which is worse than a reboot, because youve probably got the severs setup to work right after a boot, but they you dont prepare them for a netowrking stack going down. I do think the best way to deal with the problem would be to be more honest with users, popup a message asking if its ok to reboot the relevant stacks, but that might scare some newbies!
Nope. If that were correct, then Apple would see 5% (or so) of the "virus" development out there. You have to put alot of work into making an exploit, do you choose to put that work into something that gives you 90% or 5% returns. Its not like if there were 100 hackers and they all decide to pick on 100 machines at random, no they all try to infect the most machines possible (you need to infect 6% of Windows machines to have the same effect as writing an exploit so good it infects every mac machine), and that means all 100 hackers will go for windows!
While Apple may be more secure, until you get 50% market share your not going to get 50% of the effort put into attacking you.
Does Suse ship with codecs? I know ubuntu doesnt but they recently changed the default repos to include them, so end users who click though end up pressing a ""press this button to get free codecs that may breach patents" and dont complain.
He got moded informative? I thought he was going for funny tbh!
Its not fedoras fault they cant package adobe flash and that gnu flash replacements arnt ready yet. If you want flash just install adobe flash32 to firefox32, all you need is tar, if anything flash is going to install easily on a fedora system because adobe offer a rpm, but even on a 64bit ubuntu system i have 0 problems setting up flash.
Another important difference, is that Fedora is much closer to a server distro, RHEL, and so learning how to administer one will have you pretty much sorted on the other.
The US War on Drugs has led to lower prices and higher purity of the product being smuggled into the country. Nice choice of words, the real question is weather what gets sold is higher or lower purity, id guess that if the stuff is higher purity it just means local dealers cut it with more shit.
And whoever decided to call tenager who were thinking of copying music pirates, sould realise 2 thing: 1) You cant copy a bar of gold only take it, so the analogy is as fundamentally flawed as all those Wifi analogies! 2) Pirates are cool Infact who ever made pirates of the carabian really shot themselves in the foot with regards to piracy "Come watch our film, because pirates are cool. NOOO! dont copy it pirates are bad!"
gunna have to disagree on this one, thier test is fairly simple. Does it have fishing protection? yes = allow no=recommend one that does.
OFC its legal, they're not forcing you to pay anybody anything, and people have been forced to use a certain browser for sites for years. hopefully they will do it via user strings, and assume anybody that is smart enough to fake a userstring is smart enough to not get phished.
Your Intel CPU would drop from 1600 MHz to 200 MHz? Are you sure? Fairly sure, but i dont have it with me so cant confirm it as 100%,it was a celeron.
That makes no sense. Wifi is going to use power no matter what; it takes power to transmit. but it also uses alot of interups, the my powertop on an idle internet conenction looks something like:
Top causes for wakeups: 10s
46.6% (113.4) : wifi0
11.4% ( 27.8) firefox-bin : futex_wait (hrtimer_wakeup)
9.3% ( 22.6) kontact : schedule_timeout (process_timeout)
7.9% ( 19.2) kicker : schedule_timeout (process_timeout)
4.8% ( 11.7) Xorg : do_setitimer (it_real_fn)
4.5% ( 11.0) : acpi surely something can be done to cut that down on the cpu wake ups. Or development of a power saving protocol that dosen't use battery when nothing is being sent/received.
I updated, but if im not logged in as root i log in to their server! And being a "beta" it doesnt give me any information, it should at least have a -v flag or a --help flag.

Isnt the key problem that, you need to get electricity from somewhere, and if you get it from the mains your burning oil anyway?
Dear god you were that stupid, at least here in UK we realised it was bullshit before we went in, just a shame too many people didn't care, and the government did whatever bush wanted anyway.

No it doesnt hes got around all the encryption by taking the end points, no encryption can help here.
end - start = patch
As he pointed out the only way to keep the patch safe is to encyrpt the program and hide the keys.

There arnt many 32bit plug-in, its probably easiest to install a 32bit browser (hell even firefox aint going to break the 4GB limit).
