It's similar to the refounding of japan that kept the emperor: it was reconized that it simply would not be doable without that because there was universal opposition. In this case the thing they had to compromise on was to allow religious law to be part of government justice. Failure to do so would have lead to what happened to the Russians. what you mean the US would pay osama bin laden and a bunch of fundamentalists to fight against the current regime?
plane tickets are free, he had to get his money somewhere, and that somewhere was pretty much US citizens pockets!

It's hardly the fault of the United States. Afghanistan is such a backward country Well apart from putting a regime in power just so the Russians didn't get the oil.

assuming the kid gets to spend some time on death row, the US could simply pull out and then pay some group to invade on thier behalf, then invade them, he'd only need about 20 years on death row!
  2. People are too lazy on Touch Screen Tech Comes of Age · · Score: 1

While i love the idea of touchscreens the consensus is that people are just too lazy to use them on anything bigger than a phone, perhaps a UMPC.
When i get the time i intend to use some weird compiz stuff + wiimote + hand gestures, but i realize while it will look cool to start with, ill probably go back to WIMP, because it takes a lot less effort.( Once i get board i may keep it alongside normal controls because im the kind of user who has 3 ways to do everything ). I see touchscreens as being in a similar situation, every so often youll press the close button but most of the time you'll be using the mouse, right?.

Touchscreen does have a place but the desktop is not it
And the Microsoft surface does seam like a complete waste of money
gestures only seam useful for either rare actions (launching programs, etc) or gaming ( using gestures to control your character in games like 2nd life).
I can only see touchscreen being useful for phones, artists and writing notes ( e.g lectures standing at the front writing on their tablet and it gets added to the screen ) any other ideas?

  3. Motion sensitive? on EEtimes Speculates on The Initial gPhone · · Score: 1

well its a long shot but i really think that motion sensitivity is the way smart phones should go.
It Greatly amplifies a cameras abilities to take panoramic shots, scan documents, perhaps even allow for 3d images. It would also allow for films taken on phones to compensate for motion that is inevitable when using such a small device.
It could also be useful for "advanced users" tweaking their UI, or allow average users to shake the device to go up levels in the interface. And it could be used to view/write documents.

The Article also mentions games, well if the WII is anything to go by then average people really enjoy games that involve physical interaction.
Security? If you drop the phone it could protect itself, if the phone is yanked out of your hand it would be able to lock the screen. OR for those of us who want to look cool, imagine unlocking your phone with a secret handshake

I really see it being included as users don't 'need' it but to be a truly revolutionary phone the enhancement a motion sensor would allow endless possibilities.

They have very long release cycles, ignored anybody who told them that it wasn't ready to be called 4.0 and told anybody asking where the missing features were to wait until 4.1. To be fair this is what end users have come to expect. Also any new project can either release 0.9 releases or has a userbase that will test thier beta enough ( e.g firefox) but KDE has a large scope but few users are going to switch there DE to a beta. They didnt lie they didnt say it was a finished DE.

KDE tried to do too much in one go. I remember when KDE 4 was supposed to be a short release cycle that was nothing but a straight port to Qt 4. It makes alot more sense to have the 4.0 release contain all the major changes instead of doing:
    4.0 to port, 4.1, 4.2 to stabilize, 4.3 major rework, 4.4 -4.6 to stabilize
For end user products it makes more sense to have a change, and stabilize model (what kde have done) than a constant change model (kernel), so given that big changes are a must its best to fit them into this model instead of wedge them in to produce a never finishing product.

I like the way virtual resolution is implemented. Take it you've never set your DEs resolution to greater than your Xorgs? The behavior shown is pretty standard, all they've done is separated screen movement from mouse movement.
I appreciate that you have to try out new ideas, but somebody should have told this guy that splitting the keyboard in 2 isn't a good idea. I also don't like the idea mouse buttons used by a separate hand, the main advantage to using a touchpad for me is 1/2/3 finger tapping.

There is a good goal behind this teribale product, if you want to make a UPMC smaller you have to get rid of the touchpad.
touchsreen? people say its tiering, im not sure that this is true on a UPMC tho? its only going to be 10" at most.
nipple? whatever happened to them? they weren't too useful on laptops but that's only because touchpads were better.
what about a more standard keyboard using touchpad technology? If you get rid of the stuff that sucks in this product, separator bar, flat keyboard, 1 big button. o wait that's my idea to make millions, does Slashdot count as prior art? Do you need to work out the technical details or can you just patent ideas?

The article way of increasing the screen space is useful though, i wonder if the EEE can be hacked to give a similar effect with the touchpad + modifier key?

i switched because i found that gnome limited me too much (although this was before i was confident with the CLI) and xfce was well ugly ( having tested it recently i realise that this isnt true but i still think that kde looks nice *disclaimer* for me *disclaimer* )

also i recently suggested kde over gnome to a newer newbie and he felt that gnome was better, i think its not a question of newness but taste. ( although stupidly i said that xfce probably wasn't worth trying, should have encouraged him to try everything like i did)

I have tried a few light DE/WM and found that fluxbox was nice but i never spent the time to set it up, maybe id like it more if i was a 'pro' and had set it quickly?
  8. Re:point oh on Interview with Sebastian Kuegler, KDE Developer · · Score: 2, Interesting

The article agrees, he believed that it should have been called a point-oh-oh release. But your completely wrong claiming they are redefining the meaning of a point oh release, the practice of releasing early and releasing often, is completely normal. They've got a development cycle quite similar to that of the kernel, only because kde is an end user "feature" they have to compromise with the distros and have a more ridged release cycle. I do however encourage you to go the the LKML and convince Linus that they should really wait longer between release and that 0 bugs/regressions should be the target of any release!

OR instead of arguing about the usefullnes of release often, and release early look what happens when you dont, Vista, the beryl split, etc.

Ive tried KDE4.0 on a low end system and it ran fine, it did have some stuff crash but it was a beta. Unfortunately the style of the system wasn't to my liking, im quite disappointed by plasma as i feal that kicker was fine ( i say fine it does have a to fast timer and a few other bugs but aesthetically its where I FEAL it should be), but i supose that sort of thinking is what leads to people insisting CLI/CDE/other old system, is far better than the modern alternative. I supose that apart from bug fixes they're wasnt much left to be done on the 3.x branch?

The article suggests that 4.0 was a framework release that allows bugs to be fix in the core, and programs to be fixed ontop of it and to that end it was a definite success.

Keeping in mind his comments on KDE vs Gnome, i do wonder what the gnome development process is like?

how hard are your voting systems, we just write a big x next to the candidates name KISS. If your system is that complicated perhaps the best method is to have a touch screen do all, the double vote checking and picking who you want (think nice shinny logos and faces for the less intelligent amongst you), then simply punching the paper for you.
