  1. Re:light transistors on Stop, Light. · · Score: 1
OK, I see. What about optical switches used by the telecomm industry? I admit I know very little about them, but I'm under the impression that they optically perform at least some of the functions that transistors play in an eqivalent electrical system.

Now you've got my curiosity going. I wish I had more time to read up on the subject, but I've got real work to do today. Oh well.

A transistor which you can turn on and off by shining light on it is called a phototransistor. They've been around for a while. IIRC it really has little to do with the stuff they were talking about in that article. Think about the solor cells on a small calculator. You shine light on a piece of silicon and produce enough current to power the device. Similarly shining light on a phototransistor will inject current into the base of a BJT transistor causing it to switch.

At least thats what I seem to remember about them. I'm not quite awake yet, so hopefully that made some sense.

  3. the real reason... on Sounds from Polar Lander? Well, Maybe Not · · Score: 1
Actually a couple of 15 year olds with too much time on their hands managed to launch a DDOS attack on the Mars Polar Lander, flooding it with so much data that NASA could not connect to it. The signal they though came from the lander was actualy the inter-planet version of 404 Not Found.

I've seen similar happen. A co-worker of mine hung up signs all over the office to try and get people to stop slamming doors as it would cause the voice-rec software to insert semi-random junk into whatever he was working on.

It should be interesting to see how well they pull it off. It'll be interesting to see how they tackle characters like Chairface Chippendale, and just about anybody from the mad science fair episode...

  6. Re:Human rights? on UK Decryption Law Pushed Through · · Score: 1
Hmm, as I live in the US, I can't speak for British law. As I understand it (at least here) you have the right not to testify against yourself. Your physical property and belongings however, can be used as evidence against you provided that they are obtained in a legal manner (with a search warrant and whatnot). It sounds like they want to be able to seach your encrypted files in the same manner that they could obtain a warrant to get into a locked file cabnet. Mind you I don't neccessarily agree with this, just trying to think out loud and figure out what they are trying to do.

Standard disclaimer: I'm an engineer not a lawyer, yadda, yadda.

Keep in mind that later on Card mentioned that the main roles would have to be played by child actors around the age of 12. I'm willing to bet that by the time casting comes around both Lloyd and the 6th sense kid will be too old.

So if this is true, how long until etoy can put their sight back up? If at all. Just what does not "pressing" the law suit mean anyway? As they did not say that they were going to drop it altogether. I'll confess to be slightly confused.

I was not really paying too much attention and at first I thought the article was talking about Santa getting stoned...
Though the whole story sounds like something that you would hear about on Jerry Springer. I've got this mental image of the big bald headed security holding back Santa as he tries to charge at one of the kids...
I don't think I've been getting enough sleep lately.
