For those questioning the religious aspects...His blog comment indicates "I don’t know about God using me in the last days? But I can see his handiwork in the universe through the math and physics; and would like to share that vision with others. However, the Super Principia Mathematica is not a religious treatise. There is nothing religious in the Super Principia, except for the Prologue.". I suspect anything beyond that and he is trying to leverage off of Hawking's recent publication.

The book site has excerpts available. The material seems to have some relevant references from history for foundation as well as bleeding edge science as well. Programs I've seen on the Science Channel seems to have similar topics that he covers. So there may be some merit there.

There justifcation, the private sector is doing well on this and can take up the slack. However, then you have to compete with how the business would works. From my perspective, there are some former windows users that we want, and some we don't want. It all has to do with why they are switching. As an example, I tend to have relatively little patience for people who are willing to do things like use binary blob drivers which you dont get source for, are legally prohibited from reverse engineering, and get no hardware documentation on the hardware. These are the type of users who do more harm to free software than they help, so yeah shun them, call them a n00b, whatever.
I think this is the same type of snob-ery they are talking about. If you are a developer able to look for, install, develop, etc a driver, more power to them. But if you are not a developer, having them do anything with source makes no senses. If someone wants to convert over from Windows, who is not a developer...they will ask..."what's a driver" or "I have a car and can drive myself, why do I need a driver"? If someone without skills has a unique piece of hardware, and no drivers are available, and they try to use their system, only to have it not work (won't recognize their video card, network, etc)...that is a perfect scenario where someone would get turned off and just go back to Windows. With a specific hardware platform, and the only one willing to provide a driver is a binary only version, what else is a non-developer to do? And as productive as indicating the need for the driver, unless the developing community has that driver, you are kind of just hoping someone can support it with open source drivers.

And several Silicon Valley executives say one side effect of the 2003 decision to cancel the Total Information Awareness project was that it killed funds for a research project at the Palo Alto Research Center, a subsidiary of Xerox, exploring technologies that could protect privacy while permitting data mining. The aim was to allow an intelligence analyst to conduct extensive data mining without getting access to identifying information about individuals. If the results suggested that, for instance, someone might be a terrorist, the intelligence agency could seek a court warrant authorizing it to penetrate the privacy technology and identify the person involved. With Xerox funds, the Palo Alto researchers are continuing to explore the technology.
It may be niave of me to think this, but the this seems reasonable. Monitor activities, if it sees something suspicious, alarm the authorities, have them get a warrent, and then find out who they are and what they are up to. The warrent is still required. This in theory doesn't prevent corrupt authorities ("big brother") from abusing it, but failure to have anything means we now have to be a reactive (cleaning up fallen buildings), rather than preemptive (prevent falling buildings) society. Maybe the alerts could also be sent to the people providing the warrents and/or the oversite. It seems to indicate that it logs when it is used. As long as those watching over the watchers do their job, then it seems sound. By canceling this, they are "throwing out the baby with the bath water".
