Without question, the biggest threat to true Open Source Software is from the less-than-free software groups. Groups such as the BSDs, for example, who create some very excellent software and then distribute it under the guise of Open Source, when it is the very opposite of what we at the Open Source Initiative are trying to promote.
And to answer the obvious follow up of "What can we do about it?" -- You can promote awareness through reason and sensible discussion. Zealotry and baseless fanatacism helps no one, and only portrays our community in a poor light.
And, of course, openly supporting the truly free, GNU-based Open Source Software, such as Linux and Apache.
Yes but did the Bible poke fun at Patrick Stewart's voice this month? The Onion needs to be stopped! It needs to be stopped now. How long will we sit idly by? How many deaths will it take? Does someone have to die for my point to be made?
It's very convinient to be able to label people a "mob" when you don't agree with them. They are hardly a mob. They are an opinionated group, certainly, but what group isn't?
Remember, just because you think you're right, doesn't mean you're not a complete moron.
And before me I saw the beast. Great was his power and demonic his smile.
The Lord cast him down, saying, "Though I have forbade your posting, you continue. Do you not know my name? I am ESR! Fear me and burn in hellfire!" and so Roblimo was smited.
That's the oldest, stupidest argument I've ever heard. Yes, banning things does tend to make people less mature about the proper handling of it, but is there really ever a proper handling of porn for children?
I can't stress this enough: We need to work smarter, not harder at this. We need to devote all hours of our time, day and night, to preventing Swiss. If, through my herculean efforts, just one Swiss is prevented, I will consider my mission accomplished.
You are all being led down the same path as ESR. Don't you see the flaws inherent in this system? Can't you see where this sort of thought will eventually take us?
If I were you, I would take a long, hard look at myself and ask, "Do I really like what I see?"
Hey thanks - to the best of my knowledge, "Bruce Perens." was the first username to employ the idea of adding a period to a well-known user's name. It worked wonderfully until the real BP figured it out. Anyway, I'm really "Foogle" and I'm just using this account for trolling exercises.
I take great offense to that. Okay, I don't really, but I wanted to say it anyway. I think pouring grits down one's pant is incrediby clever. Moreover, I would go so far as to say that it's "Insightful", "Interesting", and wholey "Underrated".
Yea, though ye find otherwise, know his name and beware his mark.
In the beginning there was darkness. And the Lord said "Let there be losers." The Lord looked down upon his work and it was good. Geek, Dweebs, Dorks, and Freaks; The Katz and the Taco, Bean and Burrito.
Not only are you absolutely 100% correct (which is mind-bogglingly insightful, I might add), but I rather think that I invented the idea of appending a period to well-known user's names. What do you think about that? You can check the UID #s if you don't believe me... But then, why wouldn't you?
Sad? Clearly. Want to know why?
This "Bruce Perens." copy was created as a test of how Karma is given out (think of it like Signal 11's test). Since Bruce is *always* moderated up when he posts, I figured I could go around spouting pure BS and get "Score 5: Insightfuls". (It's not like I needed the Karma, since I've got way more than I could ever burn off) And, I was quite sure that no one would notice either because, seriously, how often do you look at a posters name? If it looks like Bruce, and it sounds like Bruce -- it's probably Bruce. Or a Foogle.
And it worked -- people were moderating me up and telling me what a great guy I was. Until the real Bruce saw the posts, and started replying with his "This is not me" posts. Then all my old posts were moderated down to "Score -1: Troll". I sent an anonymous mail to Bruce apologizing for any trouble I put him through and that was that.
The "Foogle." idea was really twisted. I was really curious as to my own apparent character. Did people on Slashdot recognize my name? Did they remember my sig when they saw it? Did they hate me? Did they like me? It's not that I have such low self-esteem that it was bothering me; I was just kind of curious.
So the test was, rather than asking people, to see how they would react to someone pretending to be me (and very obviously doing so).
