  1. Minimum wage jobs aren't being moved on Tech Firms Defend Moving Jobs Overseas · · Score: 1

Is Carly saying that only minimum wage positions are being moved overseas? If so, she is lying through her teeth - easy to prove since her lips are moving.

On the contrary, the positions that will be left will be the minimum wage positions, but those will be taken by the 8 million illegal immigrants whom Bush wants to give green cards.

Maytag closes a plant in Illinois which pays its workers $15.00 per hour to build appliances. The plant will be moved to Mexico where the workers will be paid $1.00 per hour for the same job. Meanwhile back in Illinois, that town now has 20% unemployment. What new job are these people to find? Wal-mart? McDonalds?

And how much was the CEO payed?

  2. You have to pay taxes before getting a deduction on Do Companies Take Software, And Not Give? · · Score: 1, Informative

What taxes do you think that companies pay? In the US, individual citizens pay the majority of taxes. Corporations have successfully moved their headquarters offshore, or "convinced" Congress to provide loopholes. Corporations don't pay their share of taxes; they don't need any more deductions.

If the show is on cable or satellite, I'm already paying to watch it. So how can I be stealing something that I"ve paid for?

If I was only watching over-the-air broadcasts, I'm still not stealing, since I'm not required to pay a fee to use a television.

    I'm not stealing a thing.

Choosing not to view a commercial is not copyright infringement. It's called freedom; I can't be forced to watch something against my will.

This is the same as using a VCR to tape a show and fast-forwarding through the tepe; a PVR just makes that easier.

Actually, when a nielsen viewer records a show, the recording is the considered the viewing. Whether the user views the recording later, or ever, doesn't matter. So the rating is still calculated based on the show having been "seen" while recording.

When DirecTV offered network broadcasts ( ABC, NBC, CBS ) within the broadcast area of local stations, they were forced to stop. Now, DirectTV is starting to offer the local stations; not the same as before, when you could receive Seattle and NY versions, even if you live in Miami.

Streaming network broadcasts to compete with the local station is the same thing. The local stations have a contract that they will have rights to carry CBS broadcasts within a market area.

It doesn't matter whether the stream comes from outside the US; agreements to honor each other's copyrights are quite common between civilized nations; would you expect Canadian copyrights to be disregarded in the US?

If streaming broadcasts are allowed, then why not DirectTV broadcasts? This is just piracy; television is not open-source; the programs are the property of the companies that produce them.

Or do you stroll through malls and see which stores have security cameras and guards, and which ones don't?

  12. What he really said on FCC Wading Into Digital TV Quagmire · · Score: 1

Federal Communications Commission Chairman William Kennard Friday (Jan. 7) directed cable and consumer electronics industries to sort out compatibility specifications for a cable-ready digital TV by April or the FCC may issue its own ruling to resolve the matter.

"I have directed the FCC to draft proposed rules for digital television compatibility standards," Kennard said here. "If industry can't solve these problems by April we will be prepared to act."

The two key "sticking points" holding back the roll out of digital TV, Kennard said, consist of an agreement between cable operators and TV makers about a physical connection for cable-ready DTVs and a means of delivering digital programming guides and information over cable. Kennard fell short of drawing a line in the sand about another contentious issue-whether cable companies "must carry" the high definition digital TV signals generated by terrestrial broadcasters. "

So, despite all of the slashdot readers who are confused about the differences between digital TV and HDTV, the FCC's position was about the physical cable connection and about the program guide menu. That's all.

"sleight of hand" If AOL required you to pay for the phone line which reaches AOL, and if AOL actually installed that phone line, then you could compare Roadrunner's "forcing" you to use their ISP. Do you expect Mindspring to offer AOL access? You're paying for Roadrunner's physical cable installation which runs from their buildings to your house, and all of their hardware in between - which they own. I have RR, and use it to connect; I have no problem with them wanting to offer a home page; if you don't like it, set it to blank and qyb.
