great, a (perhaps) intelligent site in regards to mp3's and taking on RIAA and we're going to go in, get the site slashdotted, servers will be shut down, and the media can hype it up as a DDOS attack.....
...or maybe I got a little carried away at the end.
...would have better luck methinks. There people give them money for several reasons. In the case of tipping our musicans though, most of the public (I fear, but hopefully I'm wrong) is still going to think that these musicans have made their money, blah, blah, blah. The exception of course is for the people who do understand the ongoing battle against RIAA and support it.
I agree with you on the aspect that looks are more important than content lately, however, some bands do have some pretty kewl videos...the problem is finding them. I love some of my NIN videos I have, as well as my Skinny Puppy, and the few (very few) Frontline Assymbly videos.
Ok, so maybe these bands (listed above) aren't relying on sex appeal and such, but the imagery and creativity behind some of their videos does kick ass
Don't take this the wrong way, but leagalizing drugs could be a good thing
When you consider what a large portion of crime is a result of (drug trade, abuse, etc). The leagalization of certain drugs could put them under control, in ways similar to the whole alchohol prohibition.
Disclaimer: I am not condoning nor condeming the use of drugs
Some of the trolls aren't all bad, like the ones that, while off topic at times, still add some humor to the site. For example, OOG. And whatever happend to TrollMastah? He did some funny stuff.
The Penis birds, and people reposting the same off topic comment to every thread are annoying, as are the first posts. But the Hiakus, redone theme songs in honor of slashdot, etc. Those can be funny.
Most people are using napster to steal music. Theft is wrong.
However, as Eve 6 said in a radio broadcast, (and I quote), "The people downloading our music are stealing it, but our true fans will maybe steal it, but will still go to the store and by the CD, buy the t-shirts, the concert tickets. The people just stealing one or two songs would never have bought the CD anyway..."
Ok, so I perhaps paraphrased the ending, but you get the idea. Stealing music is wrong, but I do it anyway. I still buy CDs, I still buy the T-shirts, I still go to the concerts. And I do more so now than before Napster.
Dear Riaa, When are the CD sales going to start plumetting due to the increase in the pirating of music?
I do, however no some people that do, and I did spend a bit of time at Ft. Meade, so i'm going to try and offer you a bit of general insight.
NSA does employ several mathematicans, crypto-types, and computer gurus. I'm not positive buy I know their main computer systems (ie. not the windows machines on everyone's desk) are *nix machines, of some form or another, so they do hire programers as well. The downside to employment through NSA is, being a government job, it can require you to move around. This is true more for the active duty millitary, civilans have a bit more leway with travel I believe, it becomes more of an option than an order to an extent at least. On Ft. Meade, I know NSA had predominatly their own portion of the base, stores, gyms, etc. The other downside, is that you do have to get a securtiy clearance (duh!), which can sometimes take a while to process, but it sounds like a good job, but as with all, it has its restrictions.

IIRC, in the millitary, sexual harassment can be defined (by some individuals, but it varies according to who you ask), that even looking at a person for more than 5 seconds can be defined as sexual harassment.
Oi, they days when the millitary was trained killers, now looking at a person for too long can get you demoted, jailed, fined, dischared, etc. Not that its really likely that those would happen for just looking, but there are some real pricks who could and would take it that far
first it was *nix is great, its sooo much better, now it sucks....make up your friggin' minds....
I personally love *nix systems, but sxht, can we keep from changing our views every time someone highly recognized in the community says something contridictory to what we had been saying in the past. yes there are some things about *nix systems that suck, but still.....
so...those of you not in the US on slashdot, should realize that American math doesn't have to be exact as long as they show a profit. besides, our "archaic" math system has worked well for us this long, why change it
P=IE ...don't ask me to do all the math now, cuz i don't remember all the equations off hand... convert P to Joules (?) = energy I'm not saying this is 100% correct, but i believe its something along those lines, seeing as how all matter has some amount of an electrical field around it, I suppose you could form some amount of charge out of that field mathmatically that could be used in comparison
Perhaps in clarification, i should state that i'm speaking more in terms of hoping for ISPS to be more like FreeNet, etc. Than an industry, as far as what is kept on file. Granted, with Centralized servers and the laws being passed, one should lean more towards logs of intrusions to the system, ftp, perhaps telnet (i'm refering to connections directly to the server, not beyond that, etc.
and in reference to my prior post, i forgot one thing, "First Post", ha.
Myself and a friend of mine were discussing that once, mainly the beard issue. We applied this more to techies in general though. Heres what we came up with:
1. New Guy Learning Unix -- undefined
2. Newbie Unix Guy on the Job -- small goatee, perhaps just a mustache, but not looking like a used car salesman*
3. Intermediate to Advanced Unix Guys -- Full Beard, perhaps slightly balding, but not a nessacity. Starting to put on some weight
4. Unix Guru/Techie God Status -- This guy could almost pass for a member of ZZ Top.
Unfortunatly, I'm at the top of the list...as soon as I start getting more well versed in the realms of Unix systems, I can start growing the goatee at least (if my wife lets me). What she dosen't understand though, is that no one (in their right mind) will entrust their networks to a Unix guy who dosen't have at least some facial hair
whoever modded this as a troll can lick my nuts...and moderate me for that matter, fuck my karma...take this into consideration as a decent post

...'course if you do get in a wreck driving stoned, your only going like 4 miles an hour...
On the contrary, in regards to Area 51, the government did admit that there is an "Area 51"...this just won't admit what...
For more millitary and government secrets, try to find out about the tunnels under Wright-Patterson AFB

Flame me if you must for this, but I disagree.

...and now i have a giant Tux Penguin.
very scary....
so where did the flaming weasles come from?
dont take this the wrong way, i like your points that you made, but my question for you is:
How Much Acid are You On?
Just a lil somethin' FYI.

Or I could just be talking out of my Arse.
Refresh my chemistry and physics, what are Leptons and quarks?
Sorry, its been a few years

I thought it was a Katz article juding from the main page.
Remember, weight was not a nessacity, but the facial hair issue could cause some problems.
I'd suggest one of those glue on beard type things, but i dunno how well that would go over....
i'm a fat unix guy with a beard. aren't we all?

OpenSourceMan, that has gotta be the longest OSM vs. /. crew post i've seen.
