If you want real security, you should have your IDS monitored by Riptech. Ok, I work for Riptech, but we really do offer a good service. We know more about IDS's than you, so we can help you set them up properly, and we essentially mine the data coming off your IDS in real-time, and our software is VERY good at eliminating false-postives.
Sorry, it's over. If 3dfx were a horse, we'd have to shoot it. They've lost a lot of key people, and they just can't compete with nVidia. The 5500 was supposed to compete with the GeForce, and now the GeForce2 has beat it to market, they're too far behind. Plus, the whole VSA multi-chip thing just doesn't work out too well. For one thing, you need 64MB to compete with a 32MB GeForce or other card, and the whole HD power cable thing is ridiculous. I hate to say it, but the company that created the consumer 3D market is done for.
How the heck did they verify that these people actually transferred Metallica songs?? NetPD says so, so it must be true? What if I had an mp3 of Master of Puppets by Kenny G, did that count? What about a word document renamed fuel.mp3, would that get me banned? They didn't even make Metallica and NetPD prove the validity of the list in court. IANAL, but there seems to be a lot of ways to fight this list in court, and Napster just caved, why? Are they getting scared after the judges decision in the RIAA case? Are they simply out of cash, and can't afford to fight anymore? What gives?
How could 5,000 people sitting in a room doing Web searches find even one person who transferred a Metallica file with Napster, let alone more than 330,000.
How do we know this software actually works? Seems to me it would be easy to say the list they provided Metallica was worthless since no one could verify how it was created. And once they tell how they created it, it will be easy to prevent them from doing it again.
Anyway, how long do you really think it will be before someone adds some decent security or obfuscation to Gnutella? This is yet another race the RIAA will lose in the long run.
If a convicted rapist decided to write a book on how to spot rapists and prevent the crimes they would commit, that would certainly be legal. I haven't heard him lecture, but if he is giving advice on how to protect yourself from cybercrimes, then it should be perfectly legit. It does indeed sound like the judge is trying to make his probation punitive.
I'm sure its just a twist of fate that this announcement comes right on the heels of the release of the PocketPC. They can call the processor anything they want, but its still a damn 68k. About time they decided to upgrade. MS is also making noise about combining your PDA, cell phone, and MP3 player. You can dismiss MS if you want, but Compaq and HP carry serious weight in the corporate world. Palm is gonna have to seriously fight to maintain their position.
How can Apple sue people for making computers that simply look like theirs??? Couldn't IBM shut down the rest of the PC industry by claming Dell, Micron, and Gateway "stole" their idea for the beige case with matching keyboard and monitor? I think this is almost as bad as Amazon's 1-click patent.
After the cracking of CSS, they must be looking for a replacement technology. The article said this was one of two Enigma machines in the world...I wouldn't be surprised if the other one goes missing as well.
I'm sorry, but I just can't accept the idea that code is speech. Courts have also ruled that giving money to political causes == free speech, and look what that has done to our political system (where do you think UCITA would be without that ruling).
Speech is expression, and while good arguments can be made to this point, code is essentially not expression. If source code and money == free speech, then we have started down a slippery slope where almost anything a person does could be classified as free speech.
This is more like the fifth turning point in the history of the Internet. It's not the same as it was 2 years ago, or 4, or 6, etc...
That's the nature of this beast, constant evolution. It won't be the same network we all know and love 2 years from now, and some will love the changes, while others will hate them.
Anyone ever listened to live streaming audio over the net? The quality of FM radio is usually MUCH better than some crappy 56k stream being compressed on the fly. Besides, there's still gonna be some jack ass DJ talking over you favorite songs, who the hell wants a "perfect" copy of that?
it is odd that at a quantum level, particles seem to know whether or not we are watching them, and behave differently if we are. Sounds like a code optimization if I've ever heard one. If (no one is looking) don't decide on a state, use all states else do the calculation and decide on a state Now, the fact that there may be optimizations in the source code of the Universe that take into account conscious beings seems to point to the fact that during the design phase of the Universe, someone planned for consciousness. Maybe they left it out in 1.0, or maybe its just the result of feature creep.:)
FWIW, other rumors have stated that the X-Box will use an AMD CPU, an nVidia graphics chipset, and the OS will be CE. Sounds like a Dreamcast on steriods.

This is a great idea! I'm sure Kenny G and Michael Bolton will be jumping on this bandwagon soon enough.

So now the rumor is rumored not to be true.
The unit costs $400, if you spent that much on batteries, you'd do a lot better!!!!
