"If those changes are not made, Intel predicts, the heat generated by its microprocessors will slope upward exponentially, reaching the power density of a nuclear reactor before 2010." Have you nuked your Pentium today?

  2. Been there, done this... on What Do You Do When CS Isn't Fun Any More? · · Score: 1
I too was once in your position and know exactly what you're going through. I went into CS Eng thinking that I would fall in love with the magic of coding. About two years later I had dropped out of school all together and was working systems for an upstart company.
After three+ years away from college I finally discovered what my true passion was: business management. Like CS, it requires a lot of analytical and conceptual thinking, but the difference is that you get to apply this to people, not source code. Are you a social person who works well with others? If so, than maybe you should consider spending an extra year or two in school and pickup a second BS in Management. It can only help you in the long run, and gives you a lot more flexablility when you are marketing yourself.
Now is a good time to be in college, so take advantage of the position you are in. Going back after working can be pretty difficult for a lot of people. Best of luck!

  3. How do I get a rebate? on Iomega Settles Zip Drive Suit (With Rebates) · · Score: 1
I have a SCSI internal ZIP 100 drive that shipped with my PowerCenter 132 back in the spring of 1996 and it has been a piece of $hit since the day I received it. If anyone knows how to claim this rebate please let us all know.

  4. On Subject... finally! on Bush And The Tech Nation · · Score: 1
Here are a couple of my predictions for the next four years:

    • - No new taxes on internet sales. Sound familiar?

    • - Microsoft will still be one company in 4 years time. One big, bloated, government contracting company.
      - More coverage of the Presidential Daughters (cha-ching!)
      - Not a chance in hell that hemp will be legalized. Got Nader?
      - Roe v. Wade -- not gonna touch it with a 10-gallon hat.
    and finally...

    • - A steady increase will be seen in sales of $3 crack.

I can't believe that /. actually linked to a news page on an AOL site. How the mighty have fallen. Next thing you know they'll be serving this site off a Win2K cluster.

Nice to see that the $3 crack isn't reserved for just the moderators... or should I say iCrack.
    Hey, now that's pretty catchy.

To boot you even have the option of making your box a dual 533 machine.

Ah, but isn't this just Apple's way of cleaning house of it's older 100-MHz based mobos? History shows us that Apple has done the same thing in the past when upgrading their product lines. Note that the extra processor costs only $300. I somewhat doubt that Apple has a brand new 133-MHz MP board that they are offering only in the dual 533 class.

  8. iTunes v SoundJam MP on A Basket Full of Apple News · · Score: 1
With a full 4 hours of iTunes under my belt I can honestly say that I've gone through just about every nook and cranny of Apple's new multi-purpose music app. Being a long-time SoundJam user here's a quick list of pros and cons.

    Pros
Very nice layout, especially the library.
Search and browse functions are great for those of us with multiple Gigs of MP3s.
Radio Tuner section is nice (if you have the bandwidth.)

    Cons
No alarm clock function (one of SJ's best features.)
Burning software not compatible with older 3rd party CDRs.
No skins = typical Apple Platinum look... blah!
No mixing function. C'mon Apple, everyone wants to be like Oakie.

Considering this is v1.0 it's a very good piece of software. I look forward to seeing the updates as they are released in the coming months.

  9. 24 Hours of Voting on And The Winner Is... Nobody! · · Score: 1

Whatever became of the notion to keep the polls open for 24 hours in ALL states, opening and closing them simultaneously? This would have prevented the problem we saw in St. Louis AND would keep people in the west coast "in play" for the duration. It might also keep the networks from calling states prematurely based on exit polls.
