    The total tax rate including federal, FICA, state, local, sales, real estate and nuisance taxes are considerably higher than ever.

    Also keep in mind that you're comparing tax rates without considering the effects of inflation on wages.

    If you look at the tax rates on someone making $175K in 2011 you have to compare with the tax rates of someone making $30K in wages in 1950.

    Plus, people making less than $50K largely pay little or no federal income tax today.

    I think I'd prefer the clueless older generation to the clueful newer generation; the older generation is much clumsier at trying to subvert the internet.

    From the viewpoint of the people proposing and supporting the law, if it breaks the Internet, too bad.

    In their view, nothing is more important than the principle of them controlling their copyrights. If it takes the destruction of the Internet, so be it.

    I imagine if buggy whip manufacturers would have had a better lobby 100+ years ago, they would have lobbied for laws that would have forced motorists to always keep a buggy whip in their car.

    Well ladies and gentlemen, record, film, game, and software companies do have better lobbyist. And they're not afraid to use them.

    The Kindle will let you loan your book to other people. They have to have a kindle (or free kindle software), but the lending feature is available.

    No it does not. Only Amazon's books. You are free to load whatever books you want, and Calibre is a great tool to do it.

    Do you consider a judge an average person?

    I agree the average person has no idea how the internet works. But wouldn't you expect a judge to ask for advice from an expert before issuing a ruling that on the face of it, is impossible to meet.

    Why do you think Oil Companies would care?

    There literally is no way to reduce the amount of hydrocarbons fuels we burn for the foreseeable future; at best we can slow the rate of increase by bringing things like nuclear power online.

    In fact, don't many of the "oil" companies own Solar companies?

    If you take into account state and local income taxes (which varies based on where you live), for the tax bracket you mention, you're not far from the tax rates you mention.

    Also, include the SS tax as part of your tax rate, as it is a tax.

    There are no open source drivers for iPods that I've ever found.

    Apple does make the USB drivers for iPods available for download except with iTunes.

    Try taking a fresh PC with iTunes never loaded and plug in your iPod/iPad/iPhone. Your PC will look for the driver and never find it.

    Then search for a USB driver on Google.

    Once you get that driver, I agree there are many bits of software you can use, but I don't believe there are open source drivers for Apple devices.

    You're overstating the importance of an undergraduate degree tremendously, The truth is that there are very few schools with the kind of reputation you're talking about. Particularly when the price differential for the private schools is 2X what a state school is for in-state tuition.

    For example, if you want an engineering degree, almost every large state run school will give you an equal degree and have an equal reputation.

    What separates those who do well and those who don't often comes down to commitment and drive after school.

    And don't downplay the effects of debt on students when they graduate. It colors and affects every important decision they make.

    The choice to go to high priced schools for undergraduate degrees is most often a vanity and a choice made by kids who are too young to appreciate the mountain of debt they're getting themselves by making the choice.

    Actually yes I can.

    Its like high school athletes who go to college and think they really are going to play in the NBA, or NFL or MLB when the odds are stacked against them so high.

    Or perhaps its up to a responsible adult to tell them the truth. No Johnny, you aren't going to be an NFL QB.

    No Jimmy, you're not going to be a professional musician getting a degree.

    No Nancy, you're not going to be a astronaut because you're studying astrophysics.

    There should be much more grounding thinking on "So what *will* I be doing in 4 years when I get this degree?"

    RIght now colleges love student loans because it removes any sort of market control over their pricing.

    Raise tuition another $1K per semester? Sure why not? Its just a *little* bit bigger loan for millions of student.

    Its not a sustainable model right now.
