I thought a kilogram was 1000 grams. A gram, I learned, was the mass of one cubic centimetre of water at sea level which has a volume of one mL.

    Is this not accurate?/p?

  3. Dr. Ari Jaaski has convinced me... on Nokia Urges Linux Developers To Be Cool With DRM · · Score: 1, Insightful

..not to buy another Nokia product. I cannot fathom that someone would actually say these things in a public forum. He poses the question, "Why do we need closed vehicles?" yet doesn't answer. He pretty much says it's because the industry uses archaic business practices. I'm sorry, but that's not justification enough to try to get around the GPL.

  4. Ready for the desktop, sure. Ready for the user? on Microsoft Free, One Year Later · · Score: 0

My primary desktop is running XP, my server runs fedora, and my thinkpad dual boots xp and fedora, with fedora the default. Regardless of whether or not Linux (moreso the OSS software that comes with the distro) is ready for desktop use or not, I think it's quite clear that it's not ready for the average user, and lets face it: the ones making the key decisions in an enterprise regarding application/services are not generally technically inclined. Furthermore, an enterprise requires support, and if they can't blame someone else for a product failing, they're not going to use it (at least where I work). Back to the point... The fact that I can hand an XP disc to my girlfriend who can in turn install the OS, drivers, and get everything working, gives some pretty decent props to MS. Every time I have set up a Linux distro for desktop use, I've always had to manually tweak my X config, find proper kernel mods for various peripherals, etc, and sometimes have to compile a custom kernel before everything works. There is no way my girlfriend could/would deal with all of that. The average user doesn't have the patience/willingness to get a fully FOSS desktop working, period. Like it or not, the ability of the general public is what's going to determine what is or is not "ready" for the desktop, and IMHO, right now, most Linux distros are far from friendly to the GP user.

IMHO, if you focus on helping other people with stuff you already know, and that's your whole job, you're not learning anything new and becoming stagnant, so yes. On the other hand, if you move around enough to expose yourself to different technologies and whatnot, you will be continually improving. Many argue that the best way to learn something is to teach another.

  9. you'd have to pay me on Metallica May Follow In Footsteps of Radiohead, NIN · · Score: 0

I agree that Justice was their last great album. The Black album was good, and everything just kept getting worse. Personally I blame Bob Rock for all of that, but that's a whole different topic. It's ironic that they're jumping on the bandwagon after the shit they pulled with napster. Furthermore, I agree with ThinkingInBinary about music being about creativity and sharing and not all about profit. By the way, if anyone out there still has a shred of respect for Metallica still and wishes to keep it that way, do not for whatever reason watch "Some kind of Monster." It's taken years for me to be able to even listen to Ride the Lightning without feeling sick after watching that. To answer the question, NO, I would never buy another an album of the band formally known as Metallica.

  11. That's why I don't use iTunes any more. on Mozilla CEO Objects To Safari Auto Install · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Years ago when the apple fanboys were all updating their blogs with the glorious news of iTunes coming to windows, I thought I'd give it a try. At this point I was not a Linux desktop user (I had been using Linux for years on my server to share my media over my LAN) so I had been using winamp 2 for quite some time.

I decided to give this iTunes thing a try, and promptly removed it after a few hours of use on my work machine, where it was used to play music in the background while I worked.

I fount it to be bloated and sluggish, especially on my less-than-great hardware. I'm also not fond of do-it-all products, like iTunes, that wants to manage all your music, be your ripping/burning solution, among all the various other things it does. I think that a product that focuses on one task will generally do that one task much better than the product that tries to do everything. That's just my opinion, mind you. Adding all the extra unwanted software is yet another straw on the proverbial camel's back, I think.

I did try Safari for windows, and while I like the fast startup time and browsing speed, the total lack of configuration options that Firefox had bestowed on me was a deal breaker. I was so used to extensions like noscript and adblock that I was actually surprised at all the extra bloat that a lot of (bad) websites had. I removed that within the hour as well.

Today there are many other solutions for what iTunes does. Amarok and Rhythmbox interact with my iPod perfectly, as do many other windows solutions.

Maybe this continuing stream of events will help others to start looking at iTunes alternatives as I, and everyone I know, has as well.

  12. whynot blame the routers? on Prince, Village People to Sue The Pirate Bay · · Score: 1

Perhaps they should focus their angst on those who actually have millions of dollars to pay for their "damages." How about Cisco and Juniper Networks, who provide most of the internet's packet flow. If a torrent search engine is an accessory to infringement, then the routers that actually route the data should be also.
