Thank you. If you didn't say it, I would have.

It's a simple matter of realizing that certain tools work fine at their job. My screwdriver works great, I really don't need Windows or Linux running it for me. And while scanners are slightly different, I think it comes down to the same basic issues. If you use Windows, and it does what you need it to do, then why change?

I'm a huge lover of Linux. I'm a geek. But my main computer runs Windows. Why? Because of alot of things. Time being the biggest. I don't have time to learn Gimp. Why bother? Photoshop works great and I know it. mIRC works great, MS Office works great, Quake 3 runs great, and, god forbid, IE works great. Maybe I'm among the lucky few that doesn't have that many problems with it, but Windows usually runs stable for me.

Yeah I could use WINE or whatnot, but why bother? If it aint broke, why fix it? The same applies to scanner drivers. Why should they spend time writing or paying for linux drivers when the windows drivers are either already there or easier to get?

Linux is great, but it's not the only solution. It's an operating system, not a religion. You will never see a doctor using a jackhammer on a cancer patient just because jackhammers are cooler than scalpals(sp). Don't crucify them for thinking outside of the linux box.

Feel free to moderate me down for thinking independantly.

A while back, a friend of mine worked at CompUSA (american computer superstore) as a greeter. Every day he would greet people as they came in and help them if they needed it. One day, a woman with sunglasses and a dog came in, and asked if he would help her around the store. John (my friend) was a little confused, as the woman was obviously blind.

They talked for a minute and he asked a fwe questions, trying to figure out who the computer was for. He came to the conclusion that it was for her.

He was helping her around the store when curiosity finally overwhelmed him, and he had to ask her why a blind person was in a computer store buying hardware. As it turned out, everything we do, she did. She was a computer geek. She was even a programmer. I'm not sure whether or not she installed her own hardware:)

She used voice commands for everything. Including writing code.

This point of this diatribe is to point out that while the keyboard and mouse may be fine for you, there are those who need the software to be productive.

As for the exercise, theres always masturbation.

In the spirit of DeCSS, someone should burn a copy of the disk before returning, and spread the ISO. Sure, the ISO would be much larger, but it would serve the same purpose, and someone will probably want this bad enough to spend the time.

From what I know about the 'hack' (very little), it didn't seem like it was supposed to be found at all, or at least not as publically announced as it has been.

Which raises an interesting question: could /. be partially responsible for this? Could the unintentional whistleblowing have thrown a wrench in Sony's plan to slip this one past the grownups until the heat was off? I would hate to think so, but it seems possible.
