I only see more and more boys coming and applying for a job as web devs believing that Microsoft products are a suitable solution. ...I'm sad now.

Mainly because it is? What do you think Stackoverflow runs on? I mean obviously not all developers are equal (and this is the same for non-MS solutions, don't kid yourself), but the Windows stack is proven to work for web technologies assuming it's done right.

  5. Re:Who does this? on E-Mail Can Reveal Your Friend Hierarchy · · Score: 1

Do you not realize that most of this is simply because you guys are all older people (at least the original members) and are used to communicating this way? There's nothing personal and awesome about asking someone if they're coming home for dinner tonight. It's just trivial efficiency-related chit-chat and I'd rather you text it to me than having to take a call (which may deduce call minutes, which doesn't happen with Internet-based texting) and stop whatever I'm doing at the time, pick up the phone, engage into two minutes of prelude and prologue conversation (that I would've talked to you about anyway at dinner or the next one) and then hang up and resume what I'm doing.

What if I'm on a bus and don't want to be annoying? What if YOU are annoying and I don't want the guy next to me to hear our conversation on said bus? Email and SMS becomes much more useful then.

I'm not saying all communications should be replaced by non-face-to-face communication. You do realize that being on the phone with someone is impersonal just like texting them, right? Sure you hear their voice, but you aren't anywhere near them and cannot really engage in physical social activities (in b4 "but phone sex!" joke). You could've had the same argument about the phone when it was invented, and look where we are today...

Same with Facebook really, is it that bad that people use that as a medium to reach people and talk to them? They're people that they may not have invented to their houses otherwise; is it really worse to talk to them over a website than to not talk to them at all?

I just feel like we keep hearing one side of an argument that just doesn't hold up. In the end it seems more of a matter of preference than anything else, and I have a hard time really believing the whole "SMS is bad cause you don't have real friends" shit after hearing it for so long (not that your post was implying this).

How much does it cost? Do you have proof that it is a fortune or are you simply lying? Why didn't HP come out with an update system that other manufacturers could use to push updates? Considering the amount of excessive packaging they give away for free, maybe they have some spare money laying around? They already have to pay people to write their own updater anyway.

If MS doesn't provide a feature that others can easily write and make work, then it's not MS' fault that others are too stupid and incompetent to do it themselves. Linus and the FSF didn't write apt, others did. Plus they already get sued for including things that literally every body wants in a desktop OS (web browser and media player), and they've already written the feature you want, so the only thing remaining is for manufacturers to wake the fuck up and start using it. It's HP's fault but not wanting to use the tools provided to them or to make something equivalent on their own.

just because there's an update service in Windows doesn't mean its readily available to HP. I've only seen a few drivers in there - realtek mainly for my system.

How much does it cost to add your binaries to Windows Update?

But then that's HP's fault, not Microsoft's. They're a business and they provide a service that you can use to update your software, and we're going to blame them because HP doesn't use it? Or because they want to make money so that they remain profitable? Who gives a shit if the Linux system is "superior"? What Bert64 complained about was that HP provided their own update service because (sic) one isn't available on Windows. That is clearly a lie that he used to ramble about how awesome Linux is on the next line, which is a pretty clear cut case of idiotic fanboyism.
