This article is just a comparison of 7 different distros, and actually not a very good one at that.
The writer seemed more focused on stupid things like sleep and hibernate.
Never was there a declaration of an actual "winner".
Back in 1999, the Computer Renaissance I worked for was sued by MS for selling a computer with a pirated copy of MS Office97 on it. As a lowly tech I was instructed by the store manager to '...just put it on there'. As a result, we all lost our jobs and the place got the franchise rights pulled. A year later, I went back to work as a store manager and lead tech in the same location however it had been sold to a different owner and operated under a different name. I vowed NEVER to knowingly illegally install any software on any system. I eventually ended up a partial owner.
8 years later I'm an IT director who oversees a handful of servers for a different company. 3 years ago we implemented a strategy to ensure proper and legal licensing on all of our servers and workstations, and implemented group policies to prevent (illegal) installations at the workstations. It was a difficult and lengthy process, but I KNOW for a fact now that we are 100% legal.
YOU Have control over the software you install in your systems. If you don't,or don't 'think' you do you shouldn't be in the IT business.
I think so many people dislike Apple right now because of what they have done to stay afloat in thier chosen (computer) market. They had to plunge into technologies that had already been introduced YEARS before. The bad thing is (and this is mostly public perception) is that Apple has claimed these as thier own. The original MP3 players from diamond, sony and creative blew away the first ipods. Same for the Iphone. Im constantly hearing what big POS's they are; both products have very inflated prices, yet the birage of advertising has forced the ignorant public into thinking Apple was the first, the best, or both -- only to find out they were fooled. By then it's too late. The general public has already adopted Apple's catch-phrases (ie: using "ipod" to describe ANY Mp3 player). Apple sues anyone who uses the name "i-whatever". Informed consumers are sick of having inferior products crammed into their heads.
Unfortunately, SB's with 8-50 employees like the one i work for had idoits running their IT internally and outsourced from a tech place. now they're gone and I'm currently working through all the idiotic mess the prior employees and service companies did. Id like to be paid $xxx, xxx for what im doing, but try tellin that to them. What I'm doing is saving thier asse(t)s! Virtualization is the key, but only because they chose to run legacy for so friggin long! BTW I use VMware and nothing else for a reason.
If the article refers to MS VirtualPC, then I concur that it is one big POS and not worth the price tag of free! VMware has consistently stayed ahead of the curve for many years in the virtualization game and will probably continue to.
you say
"I have no critical reason to update."
With all the inherent security misses with any new OS release from MS, which is better, losing your OS to a glitch or not doing anything and compromising your security? I state the obvious: back up your files and go for the SP updates. Chances are if you're running vista, you (hopefully) did this with your XP box not that long ago anyway.

Would make for an interesting game of pong!
This would make a good bar bet - which is flatter, the universe, or Kansas? A: South Dakota.
