a 32 bit, 133MHz RISC CPU
a 320x200 screen with 256 shades of gray
true sound for reading mp3's (mmmm... drool)
possibly a "futuristic look"
The thing has true sound and the 'for reading mp3's sounds more like something the author stuck in there.....
It looks like to me that was just the authors comment...
it has 256 shades of grey.. dont go bananas this is not even really official from the company or anything folks..
That was my inital response also.. but it kind of led me to think maybe it was a bit of an exaggeration.. which I think it is someone may write a Mp3 program but it is just going to have a better sound system yb the looks of it

No we did not suddenly need DNS, when it became a requirement for handling our own domains like say.... when we got our own T1 and the ISP would no longer be handling it so a sudden need came about.. not really sudden we made plenty of time to decide and all but.. thats how we 'suddenly' had 100 domains sorry for the confusion there
And.. I personally had no trouble reading the BIND Howto and even setting up a few domains but it was about the perceived effort of configuring it and the fact that it was a Linux machine and my bosses were like we dont have any other Unix machines we would need someone to administer it blah blah blah
I realize it would not have been that much trouble, but if there was a GUI interface (not that hard to do as you have pointed out) im not even sure it would have mattered, DNS is perhaps a bad example, but in this case it still kind of proves the idea a little
Abstract the user from more difficult details while providing a functional interface to whatever system you are configuring.

A perfect real world example of why GUI front ends can be real good.
My work needed DNS but my bosses knew of BIND and its configuration files and had lingering doubts about its security just by reputation. (I pointed out it was now secure but the first impression must have been a big one...)
So they looked at the complex DNS configuration files and I showed them examples of how to do certain things and they were like I dont have time to learn that (everyone actually was really busy)
So we ended up using NT for our DNS, because it actually is more simple.. whether you guys believe it or not, I can write out DNS configuration in BIND and setup a name server.
Why did they go with NT, because it was easier to set up and easier to maintain..(Except for those times when it came to reinstalling and I had to hand copy all 100 domains by hand.. *sigh*) Anyways it really is easier to setup so.. why do all you people insist EVERYONE needs to know how to hack a BIND configuration file instead of just learning how the name server works and writing some GUI front end that is like 10 times more functional and time saving??? Huh?
I dont want to become a BIND master before it takes me 15 minutes to figure out something and change it, I *need* usability and ease of use, configuring DNS, or FTP why should that be something only a 60K / year UNIX admin can do effeciently?? When a GUI abstracts enough from the underlying system to allow for nearly anyone to do it??
Anyways.. just my two cents

Let's face it. The days of the Internet being a free-for-all are over. Corporations are going to find ways to collect demographic and personal data. Trying to legislate this out of existance is like trying to legislate Napster and Gnutella out of existance: It isn't going to happen.
We all know that this sort of thing is going to happen but when it comes to the wire do you want to be one of those who went down quietly, or do you want to be someone who stood up for something they believed in?
So like 10 years from now when I have no rights to speak of, I will at least feel vindicated I did my absolute best to do something I believed in.. and somewhere to someone that can make all the difference

You see.. I was sitting here reading a MS only magazine when it hit me why Microsoft is on top and Linux is no where to be seen.
I am going to try and keep this fine grained but there are some huge sweeping factors that this article I read in SQL mag kind of gave me that I had not really thought about before (please dont flame me if its like something even a two year old knows)
The articles title was DOJ vs. Microsoft it was in the Aug 2000 Issue of SQL Magazine.
Here are some quotes to kind of show what im talking about then ill explain some of what occured to me
First he goes over what all the ruling was subtly enforcing his coming punch line with little things like 'judge jacksons disregard for microsofts arguments'
He then explains how Splitting MS up is "supposed to" help consumers..
Then the punch line where this really great to that point.. delivers its true colors
First, The microsoft application comapny won't have any inventive to write aplpications for other platforms because Windows systems dominate the market, and the comopany already makes the software that those systems ryun. The competing OSs don't have enough market share to make substantial development efforts economially viable.
That statement... strictly speaking is TRUE. BUT that is the freaking REASON the other OSs are not viable.
Now he goes on to tell you more about who he is and why his decision should matter, kind of a subject change/nail in the coffin.
Second, as a member of a small ISV, I realize the split creates no new market opprtunities, in part because the software makret is mature. Will a company produce a serious competitor to Windows 2000, Office, or SQL Server? I dont think so. Microsoft will continue to dominate the corporate desktop because it provides the best desktop OS. The microsoft application company will continue enhancing Windows applications and will make competiing more difficult for ISV's. Inthe long run, the effect of a Microsoft split will be exactly the opposite of what the DOJ intended a split wont serve either Microsoft of consumers any better
There you have it people.. The brainwashing.. Now just think this is just one small article of one writer.. Think if you read maybe two or three NT related magazines and you see this same subtle brain washing occuring all over the place. With no real knowledge of what the FreeOS' are doing or that there ARE really vialbe alternatives.. You believe things like that and when someone mentions linux and your the PHB you just scratch your brainwashed head and say Linux? It will pass...or something but you keep yer stuff pro MS.
The main point is so much is being written like that its just sickening. That article made me sick.. To beat MS you cant just write better software, you have to out market them and stacking it up it just seems impossible.. they have not only ten years of bloat but also ten years of being on top as a mindshare lion... That.. people is going to be harder to undertake even with absolutely PREFECT software...
Anyways I just felt the need to add that to this.. it fits so well
Also dont mistake this as some mindless Linux drivel since I really believe in some of Microsofts Products (please dont flame me ive had this discussion I even read this article and I realize most any ppoint relative to NT and how insecure it is and how evil it is etc. I use the best tool for a joband if I have a choice I pick Linux, if I dont have a choice, some of the time the Microsoft product altho expensive and bloated gets the job done.. ) This article just really pissed me off.

Really, I think they got away with that slogan because some programs were enhanced to run faster on a PIII, and these programs supposedly would work faster with a PIII, thus your internet would be faster.. It was paper-thin at that. Hehe, I realize all that AMD does is not gold either, I am impartial, its just I think Intel has had their chance and would liek to see AMD have their chance as well.
If you think education is expensive, try ignornace
AMD's 3DNOW technology isn't much better, but at least they don't use that as the reason for raising the price of their CPU's How else is AMD supposed to compete in the x86 market with Intel releasing SSE instructions etc?
They needed a gimmick and I am impressed they come up with the engineering resources to create more than hype/vaporware.
AMD has put their money into their processors(Where their mouth is) Not into the hype and busting Intel's balls.
Take me your average programmer, I keep up with the technical issues for the most part and.. I cant think of to many times were I have been sold any hype about AMD processors, but nearly every campaign from intel is hype/shit.
That said how fair is it to judge AMD on the same scale as Intel when they have been palying catch-up the entire time and still managing to stay afloat?
Look at the Athlon, its not even native x86 it just emulates it.
It may be like a raging bull with power consumption, but lets at least give AMD the chance to become king of the hill and then see where they take us.
I just dont thinkt here has been a lot of room to innovate and stay ontop of the Wintel world. How can you just get back to RISC processing and stay in the market?
Simply said if you want to be king of the moneypile you will be running a windows platform for a while no two ways bout it.
Thats where the money is so I think in order for AMD to become a real innovator they need their time on top before they will be able to 'push' something like RISC and strong arm the rest of the PC world into it..they would just be laughed at right now and we all know Intel isnt going to.

Feed it a couple of boot disks have the CD Rom In Drive.
It has nice menu's to configure devices and nicely tells you where conflcits are with IO ports...
This makes setting up something like ohh.. a NIC pretty cinchy. It has always easily found my 3Com card with the GENERIC Kernel.
Compiling the Kernel is like edit a file added a couple of lines.. typed in one command It went
There is also no way to really write over your kernel and then get locked out since at boot time you can just tell it to use a different kernel.
So is it easier to install for a newbie? Yes.
Is there documentation that explains a lot of these features and guides you through it... Not really.
I would say with just a little more decent documentation there would never be a need for GUI Installer. If you know the basics of the hardware you are setting up its very easy.
If you are talking a transition from a "I dont know what a serial port" windows/linux crowd who somehow managed to get either OS installed.. No your just gonna wipe out your partitions
Anyhow.. If you ahve installed a Linux distro and used it for a while and then you move to BSD you will fin dthat its generally easier to use than xyz Linux distro.
