I love linux. I love all of the things it can do and windows can't. I love saying linux. I love that knowing linux makes me look smart. However, linux is NOT an end-all tool for everything. Not everything can be done using it. It makes you look smart? Really.. most people just give me strange looks and classify me as odd. Like Li? liiinu? Linux? What is that...
And no Linux cannot do everything and some people still argue about just where Linux needs to be going.
However... as a serious digital media workstation I think some serious commercial support such as an App like Renderman would be a boon to linux(Random BSD Plug:And FreeBSD since it can emulate Linux;-). No your right I do not want everything running on Linux. But when it makes sense yeah I want it.
Partly because windows crashes, and linux drivers wouldn't allow me to get the most of the hardware. But more importantly, because some things work fine without them. Certain tools are used for certain jobs. Really? Linux and open source drivers tend to be MUCH better than the windows counter parts. If there is a Linux driver then there is a *GOOD* chance it is much better than a windows driver for the same hardware.
There are some areas this is not true and mainly I think. Sound and Video and this is rapidly changing. So that is no longer a good claim, maybe a couple of years ago yea I woulda said this is annoying. But now its quickly becoming another Linux Myth. Before anyone flames I know there are areas that need to be fixed here.. But overall its getting MUCH better.
I have actually tried this program now. It is called Broadcast 2000. it is more tailored for Video but it can do DVD-Playback. Edit multiple sound streams merge them and do a lot of REALLY neat stuff.
The interface is a bit kludgy but overall it is a very impressive application.
It is GPL'd and it "could" be better but it performs VERY good.
Okay all of this company buying just bothers the sh!t out of me. Okay.. If they were interested in the implementation I think if they threw some of that IPO cash at Chilli Soft they could have easily bought all the source and had rights to create their own version or pay Chilli to just develop it for them even.
Why snarf the entire company if you just need it for your applications.
I *CAN* understand but do you need that much steering and does the price advantage ever work out buying another company versus just paying them to develop software for you? Hmmn, I dont get it but at anyrate I hope this was not a wasteful move on Cobalt's part.
Okay if this thing is in the 200-300 Dollar range here are a few reasons *I* would buy one.
Proprietary disk formats? mmmn, nothing like reverse engineering it. And you know people will and I will help:-)
USB? Hack that to, I know this sounds lame but lets port a useful opearting system to it. Meaning a BSD or Linux since these are tools we have source code for:-)
Porting will probably be less of a task since we will have x86 compatible which means little to no porting for the processor arch this helps.
You get a Free OS Kernel on this thing and you can do whatever the heck you want with it. Ethernet? Cool, get a device driver working for it (I imagine MS is cheap and unless they are really stressing making reverse engineering difficult they will use a name brand nic with quality drivers out there already. to which we will most likely already have drivers for)
I dont play games much so I would not be buying one for games:-).
Reverse engineer the USB port's and how they communicate and you have access to a lot more stuff.
Another important factor to consider is how much on die integration all of this will have with the mobo. The more there is the harder it becomes to hack. but if you have say.. an open PCI slot.. the sky's the limit.
Granted its lame for gaming but they will be in a HIGHLY competitive market and if we can take advantage of this...:-)
Overall I agree with your point buying an X-Box is a bad idea over a PC however its wrong to assume it will not be useful in certain capacities.
I am sort of excited:p hehe I love new toys I really dont care if it is made by ms or anyone else. If I enjoy it I will buy it and waste away my days playing with it. I try and not let idealism get in the way of my enjoyment of life, its been rough enough without being an RMS and not using anything but Free software.(Note I know thats not politically correct.)
Alright so dont discourage them damnit. With maybe two weeks of saving I could afford 3 or 4 of these. Beowulf anyone? ROFL (Okay thats a lame troll:-)
I read some intruiging reviews about QIII and performance. Nvidia is seriously in bed with Intel as well.
The reviewr basically said he could not figure out why for any reason the PIII's of lower processing power were beating out higher powered athlons (incidentally the athlons and PIII were equal Mhz but the athlon isof course the quicker of the two.)
QIII Was running a good deal faster more than 5-10fps in some instances on the PIII's. The reason suggested was Invidia/Intel optimizations that intel made to compilers for them and the chips for them. Stuff they are not just going to give out. So I truly believe Nividia is slowly and quietly (to the masses) in bed with intel and microsoft and their regime. (It could be worse yes but it does not change the facts.)

I must say not many companies impress me now a days.:-)
I do not know what you think BSD but I think Server and damn good server.
Now you tell me. FreeBSD seems to have rather good driver support.... Does that look like an acceptable amount of drivers to you? I think the Driver support in FreeBSD has picked up a LOT lately. Anyhow other BSD's can hacn n port. I rather enjoyed reading that big list of NIC's that are supported.
I dont know if I made this clear but anything I do that is intended for the internet I make darn sure is cross-browser compatible. the easiest way to do that is avoid the kludge of the two DOM's etc:p. No Jscript/ECMAScript/VBcript. Server Side Dynamic stuff or bust I have been burned by trying to do flashy neat stuff for IE/NS/BrowserXyz:-)
No actually microsoft has not molested Kerebos. They are still using compliant Kerebos! They just are using parts that are in the spec that no one else has used so it actually still plays nicely with everyone else.
Heh Heh, Yes you can develop cross platform. Yes you can even do so quickly and at an equal pace to what you can do with a specific browser. I also will not ever do anything that will not at least work in Netscape. But that does not change the facts. Facts are facts and netscape lacks support that IE has. Most of my scripts tend to be for eye candy to make things purdy... face it it takes good looking stuff to sell:p or at worst some WDDX stuff which I use Java(ECMA)script for.
I already do things as server centricly as possible but I do not see the point in torturing myself to write Javascript when yes I can do so and I am competent and capable of writing the code. But let me ask why?
I have developed 3 or 4 very big applications and every time the people I have been developing for were more than willing to allow IE to be the client. I said Netscape will be functional which it always will be.
What it amounts to is im not going to spend the time to do cross platform stuff for internal-only applications that only NEED to look good for one browser. So I pick the better browser.
I am doing some contract work just developing an intranet. FreeBSD/Apache/Php4/PostgreSQL For the server platform. (I need triggers MySQL people!)
My heartache comes in when I have to select a client. You see there is not much of a choice honestly. I can pick Netscape 4.x Which has somewhat lacking support for a LOT of goodies I like to use. Just standard CSS/DHTML/HTML4.0 that it cant even handle. And on the scripting side VBScript seems to play the nicest out of all scripting languages. It stops me from having to change coding mindframes when im doing VB/Delphi work.
The point is If you pick something IE4 is the way to go. Ive encountered some *nasty* problems with IE 4 and 5 and some Nasty problems with NS 4.x. Im at a rock and a hard place because they will be using this app for the next 4 to 5 years locking them into an investment with IE. What can I do I need to make money and im not gonna sacrifice some useability features AND time coding to make it work with Netscape I refuse.
I think this is happening a whole lot in RAD application development projects. It also locks people inevtiably into a windows platform when you throw ActiveX and stuff closer tied to windows.
I think I would jump on the Mozilla 6 band wagon Immediately if they could really put up some stable competition. But Ive used it and its crap. I tried to moderate on/. and it just died from all the select objects that loaded on the page.
*sigh* Im watching some fairly good dreams become just that, dreams as Mozilla desperately hacks a last attempt at a good browser?
The problem with free linux machines on the net (as has been pointed out) is to avoid having them used for DoS attacks, spam, etc.
How are these any different from something like shellyeah.org or VERY low cost shell's that you can afford potentially a high number of and obtain a lot of bandwidth for relatively little cash.
I love linux. I love all of the things it can do and windows can't. I love saying linux. I love that knowing linux makes me look smart. However, linux is NOT an end-all tool for everything. Not everything can be done using it.

I tried to moderate on
*sigh* Im watching some fairly good dreams become just that

The problem with free linux machines on the net (as has been pointed out) is to avoid having them used for DoS attacks, spam, etc.
How are these any different from something like shellyeah.org or VERY low cost shell's that you can afford potentially a high number of and obtain a lot of bandwidth for relatively little cash.
