Boooring again I read a few comments here.. took a look at a couple of paragraphs and realize that this is just editor and journalist laziness.
You would think these guys could at least find SOMETHING worth informing us about? Granted most people are not aware that this so called 'fork' potential I have read an article similar to this on more websites including/. than I really care to mention.
Again find something news worthy to publish then I may feel compelled to read ZDNet's articles and listen to the message they are spreading.. this just knocks their credibility some.
Silicon.com has uncovered growing concern that the Linux operating system suffers from major security problems that could prevent its widespread adoption in the enterprise environment.
The very first paragraph tells me I do not need to continue reading. Amazing how they have magically uncovered this to reveal it to the rest of the world. BZZT im working lol no time to read garbage.
The 64-bit chip will also allow for much larger memory addresses. The upper limit of the current 32-bit processors is 4 gigabytes. Of course, who the heck has 4GB of RAM? If you do, please call me, we need to talk. High-end servers are right now shipping out with about 1GB of RAM. The ability to map only 4GB of memory will start to become an issue sooner than some people would like to admit. Eight years ago most computers contained between 4 and 16MB of RAM, but today it is commonplace to see computers with 64 to 256MB of RAM, a sixteen-fold increase. This means in another 6 to 8 years, consumer-end computers will ship with 2 to 4GB of RAM, and high-end servers will need at least 16GB of RAM. A 64-bit processor can map thousands of terabytes, (1.84e7) effectively eliminating the 'memory limit' barrier.
This is a snip from the article that was sort of bothersome and or frightening to me.
Okay as a software engineer in my limited experience here if a server needs 16GB of ram as this guy predicts things are going to be moving to a VERY server centric environment or.. there is some SERIOUS bloatware being written.
It is sad to actually say we need more and more and more ram just to accomodate bloatware. When is gates law gonna start falling off??
I can imagine it but how many servers are gonna need much more than 16Gig of ram...
Then I look over at my webserver who is using 800MB of ram and I sigh.. How soon before the NT box eats all its phsyical ram and starts swapping and dies?
The whole reason we added more ram to the machine was so that it would stay up another 10 hours so we did not have to reboot so often.
Enter the hell that is 'modern' software that slowly chews up memory and never returns it.
Note the two Unix webservers I have use 1/4 of the ram this NT box does and go down FAR less often and serve equal or greater loads some days.:-)
*sigh*
Thanks AMD you will allow me to not have to reboot so often, G.
I know this is a bit redundant but It looks like it is not going to be set up except for a few tailored games... Anyhow. Just an observation. It seems quite useless since it wont be especially good at any one task.. So whats the point?
It has served the utility of informing a bunch of people of a potentially wasteful product. Thats probably the exact reason why It IS a pipe dream and now that we know about it we see that.
Perhaps "more powerful than you can possibly imagine" could be used as a good anti player killer. If someone killed you, you could then temporarily pass all or double your power to the next opponent they fought. Insures they at least have to give up their own life to take yours.
This idea struck me as a highly fun disabling and political idea. Granted PK is horrible when you get some high level characters who can brutalize lil guys.
Okay follow my line of thinking here. If you have to basically sacrifice your life to kill someone then the point of being a good PKer is invalidated quite a bit and it probably would only amount to 'making a statement'
That seems to make it a bit to 'political' Because PKing is an important part of a good Roleplaying Game to me. Online gaming etc. I enjoy the challenge of having other players after me.
What fun is it to know if im killed then I know im gonna die it would seem to take away a lot of motivation for the game. Granted I see where you are going. taking power from the more powerful characters is probably not a good way to keep the addicts coming:p
Well I had a great idea until I saw "must work in unix" I was going to write the doze registry daemon. Goes to the background and every like 5 minutes deletes a registry key! Imagine the fun you can have! lol.
LoL duct tape is like Linux, Suited well for some things.. Duct tape does things such as hold sub-sonic aircraft together. Scotch tape on the other hand is suited well to hold gift wrap on a package toghether. See where this is going? Anyways you can use duct Tape for things like holding Radio stations toghether.. ( low budget bastards:p ) You see how this works.. Duct Tape RULES! Scotch tape is for sissies lol.
IANAL but I have signed a few NDA's in my time and they seem pretty explicit and tough to get around.
Example any thing I wish to release public domain I have to check with work first. Chances are good if im writing a game or a chat client (ive done both..) they are not going to give a rat's ass. But if I introduce competition.. say I release an insurance system that would even indirectly compete with our system they can say. Nope stop that now. And by way of the NDA it does not *matter* WHAT software I write actually.
It could be *anything* and if they say.. no can it, then I have to do everything in my power to remove it from the public domain. It sucks yes but what if my company was working on a gaming division? And I just released MegaKick3D and now everyone stops playing all FPS but this one.. Not bloody likely but it *can* happen. So in effect they have a LOT more control than you guys are crediting them with.
Fsck the GPL you signed a previous binding contract. Thats like Saying youll give someone something signing a document that says it and then giving the object to someone else and signing a contract saying you will give it to the second person as well. Who do *YOU* think would be in the right their to claim ownership to that said object? Ive researched this a little because the severity of the NDA really bothered me and I know a couple of guys at Law school. Your fucked but what can you do?
Its not one of the 1st thousand. Its supposed to be random from what I gather:-) so you just prolly gained realistically a good 50K competitors at least. Slashdot gets a good 450K hits / day I know I prolly come to main page about 4 times a day. post a few comments etc.
So.. that knocks down the unique hits down prolly ( unless those are unique ) And anyhow You have some addicts (-:lots:-) who refresh many more times than me lol. And a good portion of the./ community seems to have windows at least for gaming ( I do ). Soo.. Its a good bet you are gonna have your chances decreased a lot actually:-)
Actually I have moderated a couple of times and all my moderation points were spent promoting GOOD discussion not just Linux discussion. I do try but this particular moderation just irked me I try hard to not complaina bout any of it but I get annoyed some of the time. And I noticed as I replied to a post a little lower down it moved from a 3 to a 4 to a 5. I am Glad for that I found the post kind of funny and worth of being up higer myself.
Okay Rant time! I dont do this often and most often only people who read to the bottom of the stack get to see my rants but im gonna

Okay every time an article compares linux to some other opearting system or operating systems EVERY time I mean every freaking time the author decides to do what good journalists should and not print EVERY SINGLE little detail to made the damn article readable? Just maybe?
What happens? It is a freaking attack on poor Linux. OH Linux can do that in Kernel X.Y.Z the author should have *KNOWN*. Its just so annoying to always see the group mindset of Everyone is out to knock Linux down. Welcome to Marketing 101!!! Get used to it and play harder dont whine granted Im glad to know the author made a possible oversight it just seems like its happening a little often here.
Someone makes a comment about FreeBSD? Flamebait! Heresey Get it out of here.
Gosh STOP this please. Linux is a Awesome operating system and it does a lot of things very good but that dont mean everyones always gotta look for someone to be knocking Linux down! They are not I did not really feel much of a Marketing ploy in here just an honest attempt at a little information spreading and *gasp* it just didnt happen to priase Linux right.
I know I was shocked one of my comments earlier got moderated up I admitted to having fun looking at WindowsCE Source. lol it generated 3 or 4 critical replies "It didnt compile it means nothing" "Its MS it cant be good its just a marketing ploy BLAH BLAH BLAH"
ROFL This is funny I mean this is the third post ive seen that was marked at flamebait just because the author said I like This operating system which happened to NOT be linux. List some of the relative merits put a little HUMOR """:-)""" indicates HUMOR people. And its a falmebait? Huh??? Sheesh.
Heh actually I would appreciate that. This thing said something about DVD playback and it went into a lot of more technical jargon but from what I can tell it seemed to be a fairly featured sound/video editing program. Course I have no experience with anything else.. but it looks nice:P
GO Here. The links at the bottom of the page. Seriouslt this does it. All:-) Perhaps you can find salvation here even? GPL'd Etc. as a poster towards the bottom mentioned. Check it out.. Click Here!:-)
Frankly if we need to get a rich guy selling Linux for it to be a corporate OS success, then I'm not so sure I want it to be a corporate success. <G>So What does that make ESR? He most definately 'sold' Linux so the suits and IMHO hes rich at the moment:p
Notice how Netscape in turn for giving away Mozilla got a bunch of programmers for free. Funny how the programmers paid by some 'larger; company are doing a GOOD portion of the core work. Others have contributed but not nearly like your making it out.
So there is a greed in open sourcing... Amusing to me is the fact I Have never gotten a sense of greed from Linux or any code I have ever contributed (minimal but I have done some to gIDE and glade)
That just annoys me since I know the primary authors of quite a few packages and it has *NOTHING* to do with having other people fix code for them or me.
I helped out because I wanted to learn some and I happened to like the project. Don't go speaking about how other people feel unless you are sure please.
Systems like this are BOUND for failure. If there is a will then a way shall be discovered. It could be as simple as renaming extenstions from.mp3 to.bah
What if it scans the actual file to determine its an mp3? Compress it in winzip first so as to change the file and THEN rename your file.
Its impossible to block something like Mp3's you can take down the major sites and block the napster ports.. but HOW can you stop the determined ( the people who really want the things in the first place? ) *shrug*
Uhm Having actually seen WindowsCE code I can say its *HAS* to be a much cleaner API than the One used in Win98 and Win2K.
Okay its not THE greatest but I did not die laughing or anything. Take this with a grain of salt since I have no qualifications really to say if WindowsCE code is higher quality than Linux code or vice versa however there did not seem to be all that much kludge and stupid stuff going on. The API is a bit cleaner than the regular windows API.:-o
I had to do a small thing for CE once and I found the source on our MSDN disks:-).
Its not *THAT* hard to license parts of windows source code. It just costs money thats all. I think of they are speaking of open source it will be something a little more open like possibly a MSDN thing or so.
