Um no... if you look at all the subset agencies they're running in good shape (what's those satellites we above). It's not a problem with technology, it's a problem with someone deliberately trying to avoid accountability.
2 things.
1. Lamarckism was considered ridiculous from the moment he died to just two-three decades. However, right now I'm taking courses on genetic adaptivity/plasticity, and it all sounds remarkably Lamarckian. So while the dude might have been made fun of for two century, I think it's about time we pay tribute to his (likely unintentional) genius.
2. Speaking of Abrahamic religions, I am trying to solve this puzzle:
"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things. " (24:35)
10 verses later...
"And Allah has created every animal from water: of them there are some that creep on their bellies; some that walk on two legs; and some that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills for verily Allah has power over all things. " (24:45)
"Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-
Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:" (96:02)
"(Allah) said: "What prevented thee from prostrating when I commanded thee?" He said: "I am better than he: Thou didst create me from fire, and him from clay." (7:12)
context: the devil is made of "fire", human made of "clay", however,
Unlike from what I've read of the Bible, in the Quran typically verses are part of a "theme" for example the first one and the second/third one are "general" (they were not taken from the middle of a specific story) while the fourth one is from the middle of the story of how the devil came to be.
Anyway, scripture studies are very interesting whether you believe in the religion or not.
really stupid question, but when was light made?
I've always been under the impression that photons were emitted at the earliest stage (despite the universe being opaque/impermeable to them) but it just occured to me that I may be wrong (all of my non elementary physics knowledge comes from Asimov's 80s books for children))
also, does it not blow anyone else's mind how all the universe could fit into an infinitesimally small space. It actually hurts my head everytime I think about it.
The topic is incredibly fascinating.
And just a thought, up to 5 centuries ago "scientists" were incredibly versatile people, with mastery over a few fields at a time... A lot of people argue that this was out of necessity, but could the versatility have been important development of multiple renaissances (In Greece, East/West Asia, and Europe)? And could the bottleneck specialization of fields that has occurred in the past three centuries simply be period of transition/stifling new ways of thinking? Could the emergence interdisciplinary experts lead to another 'renaissance' of sorts?
Ummm... that's a bit insane, and to me seems a bit more off than bible literalism.
So catholics believe that the pope has a direct line to god?.......
Is this through fax? or phone? or are they still back in the telegram age?
"state censorship, despite being a central tenet of islam"
I must've missed this "tenet", damn religion, it's so sneaky.
So basically multiple countries within Asia (including east Asia, China, North Korea et al), various African nations, parts of South America, parts of Europe, the US adhere to Islamic laws (according to you).
Islam is really taking over. Put on your tinfoil hat and go hide in your bunker, won't you?
I am kind of conflicted about this information, half the people I know in Iran (generally from non-capital cities) have really shitty internet access, but the few Tehranians I know seem to be able to easily d/l watch videos I send them from various random sites (or else they're just pretending? heh).
I certainly don't support this, however I am curious as to what the real rationale is and for HOW LONG the internet is gone. For example, here in Canada we have a media blackout on election results during the day the elections are running... obviously that's not a problem in Iran because the TV is estate controlled, but I can definitely see something like that being used to justify internet closure.
I personally don't support any kind of blackout since it sets precedent, but you kind of have to keep in mind that without a constitution and censorship tendencies, legislation like this passes through without a blink.
Wait, are we supposed to sympathize with something a country is doing that's good for them and reassures their sovereignty over their resources?
Oh I forgot Iran is TEH AXIES OF EIVIL. They're not allowed to be sovereign.
Robots aside your picture are pretty amazing.
Who am I kidding, first we're being declared dead by the SSA and now the robots are taking over. It's a conspiracy.
No what you don't understand it that religion is not being supplied as a cover for Pakistanis who are well aware of the motivations of their government, religion is being used a scapegoat to pass on the blame to the larger Muslim community at a time when the West is ready to blame almost anything on the "muzzies". The government doesn't care whether their "reason" for action may have any repercussions for anyone, they want an easy pass, and the easiest pass is to divert attention away from the more
So instead of saying "WTF is wrong with Musharraff...", it becomes "WTF is wrong with muslims" and since Muslims are such a diverse group of people, stereotypes are brought up and people start directing unfounded and quite frankly disgusting bigotry towards anyone who happens to be Muslim.
I've been lurking on these boards for about two-three years and the amount of hatred and ignorance on these boards whenever something that has to do with "Islam" comes up is just plain disgusting.
Captain Obvious says:
1. A vicious dictatorship, which has recently been accused of the murder of one of the most prominent politicians in the world (Bhutto), decides to ban an important source of information (youtube) from their citizens... (Go see the number of Pakistani political movies on Bhutto's death)
2. They use Islam as an scapegoat to justify their actions so as divert/dilute attention from their personal political motivation by passing on the "blame" to the larger (1 billion) Muslim community
3. At the moment of reading "Islam" and "censor" the so-called freedom-sensitive western slashdotter abandons all rational thought and begins foaming at the mouth.
Good job Slashdotters, your intelligence (or rather lack of) is blinding.
wrong answer try again.

life is estimated to be 2.5 billion years old... the universe is 5.6 times older than it. a billion years is apparently a really long time.

Although the hills have eyes. Death Star II: This is a crappy movie isn't it?
ps. political incorrectness is not a justification for being an ignorant ass.

Not blocking the internet genius, the Oil Bourse.
