Hmmm, I don't see a problem with charging a premium for this tech. Say the processing power of a mid level Core 2 Duo (running a P8400 right now and that's pretty much the sweet spot for mobile computing power when it comes to me), but 3W power draw for the whole system running at full tilt including screen and radios (which is roughly similar to the iPad and other tablets)... with a 100Wh battery, you'd be looking at over 30 hours of heavy use, and far longer runtimes with more realistic use.

I'd pay upwards of $2K for that, easy.

Hell, if an iPad with a keyboard case (which would contain a nice flat extended battery and have a trackpoint) could run Windows or even just Ubuntu, I'd be looking at scrapping my Thinkpads.

Of course, (IMO) this situation shouldn't exist in the first place - Google shouldn't be allowing carriers and manufacturers to lock down phones this way at all... but that's a different topic. :(

Google's phones (Nexus) are all easily unlockable and rootable. That's no accident...

The problem is the carriers and manufacturers, who just love locking down their phones to turn them into featurephones with apps... no doubt, Google should be looking for a way to force complete openness on both the carriers and the manufacturers, but it looks like that might be far easier said than done...

Now if only Google would release Motorola's next few phones completely unlocked (fastboot oem unlock, or what was it?)... then I'll buy a Droid 5.

Do competing companies in the mobile computing sector file patents for functionality that's been implemented in dozens of different devices and then sue their competitors with it? In case you haven't noticed, most of the lawsuits we're hearing about in the mobile sector these days are either Apple suing someone or someone else suing Apple in retaliation.

I actually think working around this would be pretty easy for any Android device that had software buttons, because you could put the call indicator/return button there... they key is just modifying the UI of the running app during a phone call."

Interesting point - mainly because that's something that hasn't been done on Android yet. Although - there is an "ongoing call" entry in the notification tray when you're doing something else (which I actually prefer to an overlay that gets in the way of certain functions depending on the app layout)... is the patent broad enough to affect this?

Sure seems like there's a shortage... I asked around whether anyone needed a few of my old ass hard drives on one of the local (German) hardware forums, and received a trade of a slightly castrated Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs of RAM and an ASUS mainboard for just a 500gig 3.5" SATA drive and an 80gigger notebook drive... both well used, of course. A few weeks ago, this wouldn't have been possible, with the hard drives worth pennies and the other hardware worth 40-50€.

Glad to hear the shortage is coming to an end though... I really need to upgrade my NAS. Last time I did that, 1TB drives were in the sweet spot... getting a bit full.

-Being light enough to actually carry around all day without being annoying

Then there's no 15" laptop that comes close.

I'm currently using a 12" ultraportable as my main machine, but would actually consider a 10" machine with the same resolution, internals and battery life (10 hours and up)... oh, and a trackpoint.
