You made a very good point! I am a slackware user myself, and occasionally read Slackware forum on linuxquestions.net. This is the only reason why I visit linuxquestions.net.

So what? She can run linux on mac, can't she? I run linux on my macbook, but I still keep macOS and occasionally boot into macOs to update my TOMTOM navi. Or to test whether a particular program runs on Mac, to check the possibility that the reason it does not work me is because I have Slackware. To be fair, I got the macbook from my employer. Otherwise I would buy a ThinkPad or Dell. But many physicists do use macbooks, and it really nice to have a well supported system at hand even for someone who almost always runs Linux.

Many physicists have a macbook. Some of them run linux, some have both linux and mac (like me). In some situations you do need to use an well supported platform, this is either windows or MacOs. If she stays with macOs only - she still can use all linux applications.

well, I tested a bit. uploading of notes to pc does not work either in Windows Vista or linux (slackware 13.37-64 bit). in connected mode, on Windows, the pen works both as a mouse and as a note taker. I will do some more testing. may be it is bad luck and device is broken. I will write an update later

and I bought Fujitsu mobile notetaker plus. It does not need any special paper. According to forums/internet, it works with linux and there is a project for exporting notes from the pen to computer: http://m210office.sourceforge.net/. It can be used as a mouse as well (so they say). But I did not have time to test this pen neither with Windows (to check if it works at all) nor with linux (which I use exclusively) Maybe this weekend I'll have some time for it. Maybe later. But definitely before Christmas )).

For me, Slackware means simplicity and trust. You see, Debian, and Arch and Freebsd are probably great. But trusting a "community" sounds a bit odd for me. I can trust a person. I can't trust community, it's too impersonal. After all, it's always a question of trust. And you can't trust something undefined. Hard to explain, but I guess everyone knows this: once you know someone, and you trust him/her - you feel safe.

    sorry, got interrupted.
Why people think someone competes (or even wants to compete) with Wikipedia? Wikipedia contains compilations of information from sources which *and* by people who probably can not be trusted. If you want to make a decision about something important never trust single source. Potentially, on any topic Knol could offer several articles, all signed by names that you can track.
    An example.
You are blind and deaf, and you meet someone for the first time, and he or she says: to make a nice apple juice, you should do as follows. Step 1, 2, .. 5. Then another (unknown to you) guy interrupts and says: "step 5 is wrong". Then other completely unknown to you people offer some tips. Well, I would be lost.
    An alternative.
Someone says to you: I'm John McRight from Chicago, I do apple juice for years, Do it in a following way..
You don't have follow his advice, you may read a book *by Mary Simmons from Bloomington*.
