If the internet via electricity grid becomes more widespread in the future, will the internet become unreliable? If the power goes out (as it did during the East Coast Black Out of 2003), the internet would lose a lot of connectivity in the areas of the black out. It would no longer matter if ISPs or bandwith providers had back up generators. They would go offline as soon as the power went off. What happens if there are rolling black outs such as the ones that happened in California a few years ago? Wouldn't this be bad for VOIP too?
I'm not trying to disparage this idea at all, I'm just curious as to what the affects of black outs or power outages would be to the internet if this form of bandwith was in widespread implementation.
what happens if a company registers a website with a n ICANN sanctioned registrar and that registrar goes out of business? i'm sure ICANN set up some type of system where the domain name would be administrated by another company, but which one? would the company who registered their domain name get notified?
Be sure that your Dell Laptop has a slightly used look to it before you bring it back to the U.K. because the British customs officials may look at it and say that you must have bought it in the United States and will make you pay duty on it.
I'm not sure about this, but it does seem plausible.
if all 8 of your organs were donated to a person with a 75% chance of failure as opposed to 8 healthy people with a 75% chance of success, how would you feel? wouldn't you want your organs donated to benefit several people instead of going into some science project to grab headlines.
If a baby who is 6 months old needs 8 simulatneous organ transplants, then shouldn't the baby just be allowed to die naturally? I consider a single transplant or a tweak of an organ to justifiable, but isn't transplanting 8 organs in a 6 month old baby breaking some type of natural law?
I know it would be difficult for the parents to bear the sadness of watching their child die, but what if the organs are rejected in the future and they have to watch their child slowly wither away, while be connected to all sorts of tubes and wires? Could those 8 organs have been used to save 8 babies or young children? Could the money that was used to pay for this multiple transplant be used to save others' lives?
My wife is 8 month pregnant and I hope we never are in a situation similar to this. It would be difficult, but being faced with 8 organ transplants, I would think that some higher power might be telling me something about this baby.
this post is absolutely right. remember waiting and waiting for YOPY the linux PDA? sure, after two plus years of waiting, it was released. then, it got trounced by sharp zaurus.
on my resume, i do not put the exact dates of my employment next to the jobs that i worked. i only put the years that i worked. so even if there was a break, they wouldn't see it. this would effectively hide the five weeks on, five weeks off, five weeks on, pattern the original poster talked about.
this was a really interesting post and response. could we do something like this for other countries like China, Philippines, Korea, Russia, Ireland, England, etc. it would be very interesting to learn about other IT professionals / slashdot geeks all over the world and their perspective of certain tech issues like off shore outsourcing, open source movement, etc.
After successfully completing a journey of 88 feet yesterday, the Spririt Mars Rover completed a journey of 88 feet 2 inches today. This is a new Mars distance record.
has anybody attempted to use the code analyzer that was developed for the SCO / IBM case. it would interesting to see if there were any similarities between MS code and the multitude of OSS code.
buy sgi stock, it is very cheap. sgi may be selling alias because they need the cash. lately, their stock price has been rising and should it rise some more they may reconsider. (don't take stock buying advice from me, IANA Stock Broker.)
no, i don't work for them, but i used to use their computers in 1998 and 1999. when i left that job, i borrowed the manual to the O2.
i bought some of their stock. when i tell people about it, i say that it is was an emotional buy.
The starting salaries for computer programming jobs is going up because all of the real entry level positions have been outsourced offshore or replaced with L1 visa holders.
i read some of the posts on bias against sco and must say that of course we should be biased against sco. if their lawsuit against ibm and charges of copyright infringment against linux using abi files had any merit, then we could believe them. since sco has used all of its energy threatening to sue 1000s of linux customers and have not done so already, SCO can be compared to kid who cried wolf. if we were to have no bias against SCO then we would continue to believe every single press release they have released.
although "kye" exists, i doubt it was used as extensively as a means to fund a business as the article portrays. it is often used by a group of korean housewives to finance purchases of household items. i doubt that newly arrived immigrants, even those living in the u.s. for several years, would have enough "good" social ties to enter into "kye" to fund the start of a business.
perhaps when there were tight restrictions on the amount of money that was allowed outside of korea, this could have been possible, but now it is impractical.
"Q: Have you had direct talks with customers yet? A: Very carefully over the last quarter, instead of sending out mass invoices, we stepped very carefully and really had a lot of direct one-on-one meetings with 15 or so companies. In the process of doing that, we learned a lot. We listened. We talked. And we went back and forth. About 20% of those companies signed licenses with us."
1) if you are looking for a pure programming job, emphasize that on your resume. de-emphasize the html / web site design. 2) if you want to emphasize your html / web site design skills, fix up your website (whilezero.com), it does not reflect your html / web site design skills. 3) a couple of days ago there was a post on good and bad cover letters and resumes, read it and fix your resume. what did you create and how did you do it? don't just list a bunch of skills. how did what you create affect the business in a positive way?
could you go into more detail about the "local business community" that you are referring to? could you also provide factual references to the above statement.
My apologizes, I should have RTF. I thought they were talking about internet over electrical lines. Again, my apologizes.

why not keep XFree (old version) for a while and work on an X alternative, something like the front end for Mac OS X...

This reminds me of that "Back to the Future ?" where Michael J Fox's character gets fired via fax in all of the rooms in his house.

now they can use the code comparing program that somebody create for the SCO / IBM case. i wonder if there will be any matches...

20% of 15 = 3.0
Great Resource! MOD THIS UP!
just wanted to lend some advice:
1) if you are looking for a pure programming job, emphasize that on your resume. de-emphasize the html / web site design.
2) if you want to emphasize your html / web site design skills, fix up your website (whilezero.com), it does not reflect your html / web site design skills.

just some tips...
