"Microsoft's patent lays claim to a browsable movie program guide."
Hotel chains have doing this with in-room movies for years. I can't say for certain how long, but well before Microsoft's 1998 filing of the patent application. I feel almost certain that I was probably browsing a porn movie program guide while travelling a lot and living out of hotel rooms in 1997.
The murder took place in Medina county in Ohio, which is actually fairly close to where I live. The sensationalist lawyer blaiming the video game industry is from Florida.
Nobody's forcing us to use Microsoft software? Sorry, but I disagree wholeheartedly.
Being a sysadmin, I'm sure that I'm not alone in being a proponent of "alternative" operating systems, but the people who control the money and the set the direction of the network infrastructure are often old school boys who are married unwaveringly to Microsoft. We often do not have a choice.
Sure, you can say I'm not being forced to use Microsoft software, but I like getting paid.
My iBook developed a rather nasty case of the "underpowered" battery shortly after I installed 10.2.4. I contacted Apple support and the very helpful tech I spoke with had a replacement battery shipped to me as a warranty replacement. I live in Ohio. It arrived the next day. For some reason a lot of tech product ships from Ohio. Since replacing the battery, my iBook no longer experiences the problem.
If your laptop is still under warranty, give it a shot.
You can also try this procedure from Apple's KB.
We have to work to common standards, which we've pretty much got licked because of the arrival of the internet and open standards.
Perhaps I'm being cynical, but since when has Microsoft truly embraced open standards? They are still trying to hijack Java, which, I guess, could be seen as proprietary in a sense because Sun owns it but it is open to a certain extent in that it embraces multiple platforms. Also, if they are committed to standards, why doesn't Chimera or Mozilla really function properly as an Outlook web client for Exchange? They send broken style sheets to Opera. The list goes on.
It seems to me they're trying to own the internet, like everything else, after denying its usefulness all those years ago.
During the Tablet PC Demo, did anyone notice that during the wireless demonstration you are asked to click on a checkbox that says "Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it is not secure"?
What happened to Microsoft's much publicized security initiative? "We're concerned about the security of your data, but, here, let us help you compute insecurely."
I would have to assert that meal portions in Europe, at least in the Netherlands, are much smaller than in the states.
My wife and I have the appetites of small birds. When we go to a restaurant in the states, we end up eating our fill, bringing the leftovers home, and eating them for lunches for the next three days.
When we were in the Netherlands last year, we were both surprised to find that at almost every meal we were able to finish our plates.
Besides, you're talking about a number of different courses in a meal and not about portions. You can always choose to skip a course.
Then there's the difference in exercise between Americans and Europeans. While in the Netherlands, we were able to walk to 75% of the places we needed or wanted to go. We simply can't do that here, because of the sprawl-inspired nature of our cities and the shear size of our country. Everything's just bigger and farther apart in the states. That's why almost every family has multiple cars.
I understand that you're looking for a software solution, but just for a bit of extra information consider looking at hardware solutions for packet shaping. They tend to be cost prohibitive for the home user, but you might want to check out the solutions from Packeteer: http://www.packeteer.com/.
At the small, private university where I'm the network admin, we use one of these boxes on VLAN2, which is the dorm network. We use it largely to choke outbound file sharing traffic and keep track of who is being naughty and who is being nice.
I know it's not what you're looking for, but I thought the Packeteer packet shaping boxes might be of interest to the/. community.
Yes, Entwistle was/is truly a master of that throbbing, four-stringed electrical thing. I would posit, though, that Dave Allen (from Gang of Four, Shriekback, King Swap, Elastic Purejoy, etc.) is, beyond a doubt, the most mesmerizing bass thumper on the planet.
I'm the "Network Administrator," whatever that means, for a small, private liberal arts and sciences university in the midwest. I have a B.A. and an M.A. in English Literature. How did I get here? I couldn't tell you. Perhaps it was that I took apart my toys when I was a kid. Sure, I had a few screws leftover when I put them back together again, but that's a different story. Everything worked, though!
Go to university and get a degree, any degree. A degree will get your foot in the door. Anyone who tells you differently should put down the crack pipe and move away from the mouse.
One iteration of my career found me managing an arsenal of techs. Those of which who had degrees were all liberal arts majors with degrees in history, philosophy, english, etc. They were tenacious champs. Liberal arts will give you a perspective that a CS degree cannot give you. CS degrees are clinical, sterile, and single-minded. A CS degree is like getting some Microsoft certification. We all know how well Microsoft does things.
Liberal arts will give you the acumen to think logically, for yourself, and with the tools with which you are familiar. This will server as a basis from which you can grow.
In addition, going to college will afford you the opportunity to consume great quantities of beer and, if you're not irrevocably ugly, get laid by sorority chicks who don't even vaguely understand computers but think that some guy who does might make a lot of money and be a good husband.
Um. I really don't think it matters that the Newton is five-year-old technology, just so it satifies the needs of the user. Besides, Apple has been light years ahead of the competition. Everyone else is just catching up. Would I really want graffiti over the Newton's handwriting recognition. Gee! You can write one letter at a time with graffiti versus laying down complete sentences and thoughts with the Newton's capabilities.
Elitist swine. Stop perpetuating an hierarchical order on users. Sure, some are more technically inclined than others. That's why we're here to help them. "My kernel's bigger than your kernel," or "My kernel's smaller and faster than yours," as the case may be, type of attitudes degrades us all. The IT/IS or whatever profession already has a fairly negative perception about it. Please, if you feel so inclined as to assert your "prowess," go buy some big-ass SUV or something.
I've just recently breached this subject with my eight-year-old son. I set him up with an @mac email address. I explained to him that I would read all of his email first and that spam constituted messages mostly about naked ladies. Eight-year-olds are not even remotely interested in naked ladies. You might call that sensorship, but I'm his Dad. When in doubt, be pure, be vigilant, behave.

...with laptops under their arms, hoping to get a little WiFi-purveyed porn with their Big Macs and fries.
Ick. I think I just made myself ill.
I probably shouldn't post this.

Your computer's freezing and you're running XP, right? I think you just identified the problem.

I hope someone else lost their job.
Ext. MOVIE THEATER DAY
The Springfield children are exiting a movie theater. The marquee reads NAKED LUNCH.
"I can think of at least two things wrong with that movie."
Or, something like that.
