    Tracking everything can't stop terrorism, they don't have the manpower to sift through it all. The purpose of tracking everything is so when something happens you can follow the trail back and get all the terrorists, not just the dead ones.

    If a digital clock uses a static display device (like the ones they used to have in banks where a stack of plastic tiles with a number on each flips down to display each number) then it is physically possible for a "digital" clock to be correct twice a day, just like the clocks with hands. Also just because Obama is following the same play-book as Bush doesn't mean "everything" he says is a lie.

    Your proposal would likely cause the destruction of the USA. About 30% of the US population speak Spanish fluently- how would they react to Canadian bilingualism? You try telling a hundred million citizens they are not important enough to get their native language, but the french are. How would Americans react to the "Northern" states getting universal health care, but they don't? Again it would be a national riot. And you think you could just roll those programs back up north? Try telling 30 million voters (who vote as a block) that they must lose their most important pork? In Canada you literally can't win an election unless you support these two programs. It would be easier to merge Mexico into the union than adding Canada. At least they would take the bribes.

    Or maybe listen to live music. The Riaa business model consists of paying the artists as little as possible and charging the customer as much as possible. Prior to that you would go out to the bar or theater and listen to a band actually play music. We didn't have superstars, but we had a large number of musicians who could actually make a living at the art.

    A business method patent is a patent on how a person can run around doing "something", not on a machine. A software patent is how a computer can run around doing "something", the computer itself isn't part of the patent. Any patent that consists of "take this person/thing that already exists, and tell it to do the following." is nothing but artwork and should be covered under copyright.

    Smaller geometries mean cheaper cost per chip. Unfortunately wafer yields drop with smaller geometries, meaning the benefits of shrinking silicon get eaten by a reduction in number of chips that work per wafer. If we could shrink the chips without a drop in yield then moors law would continue (for now). The other issue with shrinking the chips is transistor reliability. As we make them smaller the chips stop working reliably.

    If you don't think the government should be interfering in the free market, then stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry. If an oil company can't make a profit at the current price of oil then let it die.

    You are assuming the NSA didn't "suggest" that the lines between data centers be in plain. Also there is no sane reason for the NSA to ever set foot in a yahoo data center. That would introduce a huge speed bump in their access to the data. Much better to just have a direct line in, with full root/admin access to everything.

    Most people are not competent to write their own encryption system. It takes a lot of very advanced math and a very careful implementation to make a secure comm system.

    most ISP's use dynamically allocated IP addresses, not fixed. So you could have 200 people using the same one over a week or so.

    It would be easier to share your confidence if the USA didn't have prisons built specifically for the task of avoiding legal due process (there is one in Cuba), didn't have a proven track record of ignoring laws they don't like, and if american politicians didn't have a documented history of lying/cheating/stealing and letting the NSA/CIA/TSA do as they wish.

    Running away from government oppression only works if the problem is limited to a single place. If you have nowhere safe to go you're just losing your knowledge of local hazards and resources, but not actually eliminating the true danger. In our current situation the government thinks we're stupid and need a nanny to babysit us 24/7. There are only 2 ways to stop this- make the cost so massive they stop, or convince them it's not working. Given how lazy/disorganized most humans are I expect the spy war is going to be around for a long while.

    If your company is under a court order to not tell anyone about a search warrant, and you have already told your customers about a code word that means that- then saying that code word counts as a breach of a court order. They might not be telling you to lie, but if you don't you go to jail.

    American law applies to whoever the men with guns says it does. If the NSA is willing to spy on everyone, why would they balk at hacking your account and posting their own canary?

    If your entire economy is based farming then low food prices means everyone is broke (no income). If you want people to have disposable income you need high food prices. The reason Africa is so poor is because western countries sell food below cost and destroy their economy.

    Given that a polygraph is not a reliable way to catch lies, and buying a book on beating it isn't illegal, and given that they just divulged confidential corporate information: I expect that a certain business man just got handed free money.

    The free market only works if it is free. When the government decides to change the ground rules, there is no choice. There is no vote with your feet. Nobody will be allowed to provide phone/internet/email that doesn't include spying, and using crypto won't change that one bit. They will just ban crypto and vpn.

    If a third party gets votes, the big parties will try to find a way to take them. This means the politics of a third party that has no chance to win can shift the country (but only on a narrowly focused issue). Voting third party is not throwing away your vote.

    Ironically the cable networks work by buying off the municipal governments to ensure a monopoly. It regulating cable was done at a higher level it would be better for the common man.

    If I was the head of intelligence for a EU country I would want to know what the USA government was planning. And I don't think I'd have a problem with spying on Obama to get that information. Just knowing in advance about the US banking crisis would have made it all worth while.

    They could set up the ultimate Napster. Download anything you want, any time you want, at a low monthly rate. And if done over an encrypted channel you could even sell your service to Americans. You would be directly competing against American Corporations (people), selling their own goods to their own customers, and keeping all the money.

    The WTO doesn't care how a country fulfills its contractual obligations under treaty, only if they do. They fully expect all member nations to obey the treaty. Period. And if you don't there will be repercussions.

    The US war of independence was fought over Corporate taxes. The big multinational corporations didn't want to pay taxes so they had a war.

    The inter-state commerce clause was designed for this purpose. They have been abusing those powers to ban drugs, but regulating gambling crossing state lines is literally what the law is set up to do.
