Yes, and having worked in the food industry (bussing, serving and delivering) I can tell you that a tip (of any sorts) is nice to recieve. All to often, you make a delivery or serve food and all you get is a complaint that it took 33 minutes instead of 30 to get there.
You're right, the ports collection is nice, but it NEEDS a good upgrade system. Uninstalling something like the gnome just takes too long and I've yet to get everything uninstalled properly to do an upgrade. apt-get is my current favorite for installs/upgrades. As easy as ports, but it can upgrade everything too.
One nitpick (and I have FreeBSD 4.0-Current on one machine and Debian potato on another so don't say I'm biased) but the BSD libc does *not* have all the same functionality as glibc (at least, not that I could find). Some examples are argz vectors and obstacks (neither are really necessary, but they exist in glibc and not BSD libc, i know, i was planning on using both and needed to rewrite the functionality for FreeBSD cause it wasn't in the libc).
The BSD's are a great system, but the ports tree isn't all it's cracked up to be (it NEEDS an upgrade procedure, I'm sorry but apt-get is the best package method out there). Fix the ports tree and SMP (I don't care if Linux's is sloppy, it works today) and get support for bleeding edge graphics cards (I like being able to play my video games too =) and I'll switch completely.
(No this isn't a flame, just honest criticism from someone who uses both on a daily basis, and both as workstations, not servers).
I'm sorry, but why would Debian removing non-free from the Official Archives cause you to stop using it? It's not like they are forbidding you from using non-free apps. They are simply removing them from the primary ftp server.
Furthermore, you should know enuff to be able to put a line in sources.list to point to the new location of non-free to get the apps that you want. Please people, don't act like they are removing the ability to run non-free apps from Debian, they are just saying they may not host the archive anymore.
For everyone who is screaming that Kaffe or Mozilla aren't ready yet, remember that this isn't going to take effect (if it passes) until Woody which gives Kaffe and Mozilla a good year+ (maybe?) to be ready for general consumption.
Actually, if you read the Social Contract, it has nothing to do with users. It's the "Social Contract with the Free Software Community" (emphasis mine).
Thinking of Evolution, has anyone clicked on the screenshot of "A message with an attachment"? I dunno, something about including the ILOVEYOU virus/trojan/whatever in the screenshot really amused me.

You do realize that this is *pre-alpha* software. There is a *ton* of debugging code in it and they have a bug tracking system linked in as well. You can also download the source and compile it with a different interface (GTK, QT, and Lestiff are all there). The speed factor is *not due to the browser.* Wait until the beta is out before complaining about speed.
First, I have nothing to do with q3fortress. But a couple of points. TFC sucks. It is a hack to try and get TF on halflife. Emulating that mod will alianate the TF community (believe me, I would know). Second, you are so far ahead because (from your screenshots) most of what you've done is just hack skins for models already in q3. q3fortress has new models and gameplay that is going to be near identical to qwtf. Using standard models with new skins and claiming you're further ahead (especially with TFC style gameplay) is *not* going to win you the tf community.
Or, if you really want Team Fortress, goto www.q3fortress.com They actually plan on making q3tf nearly identical to the original tf rather than the hack job that was done with TFC.
Or, if you really want Team Fortress, goto www.q3fortree.com They actually plan on making q3tf nearly identical to the original tf rather than the hack job that was done with TFC.
That is very true. I believe what he (and I) are talking about are pentacles (pentagrams, the star sits on 2 points, pantacles sit on one). Pentacles are satanic.
I think you're wrong. I'm one of the most diehard quake fans you will find. I also know alot of other members of the quake/quakeworld/quakeworld teamfortress community and many of us linux users have been waiting specifically to buy the linux version. Others I know have bought the windows version but also ordered or are going to buy the linux version.
Also, the binaries aren't available online and supposedly are going to be until after christmas sometime.
Just because gamers are impatient doesn't mean that we won't buy the linux versions of games.
id said that they would release binaries for all 3 platforms supported sometime after christmas. Which means that if you buy the linux version, you'll be able to play it on windows and mac as soon as id releases the binaries.
Umm.. all of the quakes have had inverted crosses, pentagrams and other symbols normally associated with satanism. You are either talking about Doom or have never played any of the quakes in single player mode. But, if you read any of the articles about id softeare, you would know that id is not full of satanists and they consider they objects placed in levels to be more for atmosphere than for any religous values they might have.
I tried that, but i still experience a bunch of visual problems. The main menu is all all messed up (Glaring white outlines) and in the game, all the new animated textures under the guns show wierd light patches running thru them as I move. Anyone else get this? This is on a voodoo 2 btw, with both the 3.3 and 3.1 libs that were distributed.
Customization isn't always "patches" to the game. For example, look at Quake 1 (quakeworld)/2/3, Half-Life, Kinpin, etc. The customizations are just that, customizations. Like TeamFortress and Capture the Flag for Quakeworld, TF Classic for Half-Life. These "mods" make the game (almost) completely different. They offer new weapons, new maps, new and different ways to play the game. That is what has kept Quake 1 alive to this day. Consoles just don't offer that type of customization.
And I know that people can say "But Joe Blow won't ever use this." No, he won't, but the "real gamer" is a quite sophisticated computer user. They buy $4000 computers with top of the line sound and video cards to play their games on. They know where to look online for the patches and updates and mods and new maps, etc.
And finally, my own problem with consoles. They take the community out of gaming. What do I mean by that? Many of the greatest games written have communities around them. Mostly IRC based, people come to talk about their gaming accomplishments, arrange to compete with other online gamers, etc. The console world doesn't offer this type of connectivity. Even with a network connection, show me how with a console, I can log on and chat with my buddies across the country and then arrange a 1 on 1 deathmatch for later that night. Maybe someday, but not today and until I can do that on a console, it's PC's for me.
"You'd be running OpenBSD, an OS with total code review."
What's that all about??? There's no need to belittle Linux on this thread like that. Especially since:
1. This is a worm for MacOS, not linux (I am going to use linux but I guess I really mean any Open Source OS, so I'm an OS bigot =).
2. Any amount of "code review" isn't gonna stop someone from writing a worm. Code reviews will stop people from putting malicious code in the kernel itself tho. And I really don't think that you can say that linux doesn't have any code review. Besides that, a worm or virus doesn't need to run in kernel space to be effective. (As should be obvious since we don't have the source to MacOS, so you couldn't put a worm in the kernel, and this is a worm FOR MacOS).
3. I personally think that comments like yours which promotes fighting within the Open Source community are a MUCH bigger problem than a slip up like this. This worm isn't causing one bit of a problem. Yet all of the flame bait like what you wrote is yet another thread of conversation that can be used against the open source community.
I don't think they actually changed anything or applied special patches, they were just extra careful in compiling with it. Plus, it requires a 2.2.x kernel and glibc 2.1 (prolly cause that's what comes with 6.0) hope that helps rhavyn
Fortunately there are some other companies that produce good linux boxes. One that I found (although I have yet to use there hardware...can someone who has tell me how good it is) and am planning on purchasing a system is Penguin Computing. Their low end machines can start at about $1300 (PII, 64meg ram, 10gig hard drive). Maybe you can suggest them to your customer.

Actually, the newest release level of slink has a 2.2 kernel as well.

Yes, they may both be called PowerPC processors, but that's like saying that a Celeron and a Xeon are the same processor.
Then why is it enabled by default? It seems to me that if [insert big enterprise here] wanted scripting, their IT departments could turn it on.

Ok, this needs to be put to rest already.

RMS = Richard Stallman. Who, btw , didn't write fetchmail. ESR wrote fetchmail. Stallman wrote GCC, Emacs, and others.
Please, if you are going to argue, at least get your facts straight first.
