    because any other job is really different ? You just don't do it with bullet, but try hard to make the next guy a homeless so that you can thrive. You won't succeed in a capitalist world if you are not ready to leave, figuratively, some cadaver along the road... might it just be a co-worker for a higher-paying job you are competing to get...

    It's not much a "coolness" thing, but a money thing. When the jock discover the nerd he used to bully is making twice as he does, without getting shot at, there is some resentment starting to appear.

    When the military developed slang like SNAFU, FUBAR, BOHICA, or even FIGMO, I have the greatest doubt about this "reputation for working under pressure".

    WWII was ended 60 years ago, that's a hell of a long time. Today's military is parsec's away from WWII military... Btw, I don't agree. The manual to beat Japs was pretty easy: "If you see a japs: if in mainland America: send it to a concentration camp; if abroad, kill it with any tool you have at your disposal."

    By the same definition, so are every child in the country, always on the edge trying to make their parents desperate by being cutting edge. Uses plenty of software and tech. It would seem "IT" is the new buz word of the employment sector ?

    I don't want to discriminate about IT, but there is no worth creation in IT. It is merely a support job like any other, and by using the right argument, you should be able to make a case that former military personnel would make the best mechanics. Yet, being a mechanic would probably not make the headline on /. (for whatever /. has become)

    I've been using Fedora and BSDs for a few years now, I didn't notice any specific difference in using any of them. Editing text files is fun, but there has never been any such thing as a standardized configuration syntax. At some point UI are just better to use. I used to be pro-textfile but I'm fed up of looking up the syntax. Sendmail is a mess, bind is a mess, exim is a mess, samba is a mess...

    BSD is hiding behind "incompatibility" to justify its own death. Truth is that in a lot of area, they're just relying on others work to keep going without taking part in the process. That being said, nowhere is it written that the Unix-way is the Only One True Righteous Way.

    Base product cost is not the only determining factor. You can hardly go against Microsoft indoctrination of people, or the myriad of course for basic spreadsheet & words processing software, just the same way you can hardly use anything but Adobe product when you are doing image processing.

    AFAIK, you can ask to have the stuff deleted from the public site, but internally, they keep all the stuff. They might be legally tied to do so... not to mention the NSA backup you are unlikely to get erased.

    Moreover, if I was about to die, I would never behave as James Foley allegedly did. There is no fear in his words. I can't believe someone about to die would behave as such. As the neck is being cut, there is no sign of blood. Even the 3/8" long cut of superficial skin I made on my thumb with a chisel yesterday was bleeding more, and I was not slicing myself with force...

    Don't worry, there isn't much of the actual beheading. What has actually been filmed could have been with a dull knife, and to some extend, the beheading could have been staged.
