And somebody has surely mentioned it before, but doesn't the whole article sum up to "we recommend that Microsoft starts making Linux operating systems" ?;)
Not that it would be a bad thing, of course...
The show relied too much on Mulder...

The End of The X-Files

and, as it has been said before, Mulder's departure killed it. They could have survived a few more seasons answering questions leading to other questions leading to blah... But Mulder's presence was IMHO mandatory for the X-Files concept to catch audience.
BTW, I always thought the way they designed the Mulder character was chosen to perfectly suit us geeks. It was Mulder's charism that made the show enjoyable (and later on, "watchable") instead of what it has now become : absolute crap:]
Until Carter has another good idea ("good idea" != "Millenium"), I will live on my memories of the first 3 seasons of X-Files:)
Like someone else previously said on this article, corporation is part of democracy. Ouch. He's probably right, but we shouldn't forget that corporations are currently (and for a few years) unable to manage, filter or even consider the huge amount of information transiting via the internet.
And how do we know that corporation tweak research results ? Because research on a particular topic is not unique, i.e., someone, somewhere, is trying to accomplish the same thing as you, whatever that thing is (except, maybe, for archiving 100% of the slashdot poll votes on your local harddrive, or knowing by heart all fortunes found on a slackware 7.1 linux system). Now that the internet nearly covers the whole Known Universe, we have a way to excange info about what we want, including scientific research ; and corporations, because they're a part of democracy, are to follow democracy rules and not to bother us.
Of course, this idealistic point of view can't stand against reality. Fortunately, we still have paranoid solutions, such as Freenet or Gnutella...
The whole point of this post is this : fight, don't cry. Fight also with your brains, not only with your strength, and remember we've still to see a corporate manager "managing" to install a *NIX server... All their base are belong to us (sorry, couldn't resist:] )
How can "they" (paranoia mode on;) call something vaporware since a beta has been released ? Or maybe the "first stable release" of all the Windows OS versions (NT and W2K without a service pack, or Win'95) pleased them more since they claimed them usable...
I don't usually post this kind of crap, but this has taken me out of my very Zen nerves. Rank this as (-2, Linux Zealot) if you wish.
This guy is trolling for sure. I mean, Sony has gone crazy over Bleem! and the others, but they couldn't block either PSX modchips or PSX CD ripping... If they can't control *hardware* that *they* produce, how can they think they will control *software* that *others* write ?
But we can all see some "new" behemoths emerging... AOL/Time Warner/EMI/Whatever sure is on its way to become another monopolistic giant. Even RedHat (no flame intended) is growing so steadily I begin to wonder...
We have a proverb here in France : "Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose" (the more things change, the more they stay the same). Once again this seems to be true.
And how about we all get together and strive to resist ? I think we all have the knowlegde, opportunity, and now the moral obligation to become an awful thorn in their foot.
Maybe we only miss some guts, but every case like this one strikes me with the urge to go to work on day and become an AOL/Micro$oft/Amazon/Whatever cyberkiller at night.
We _can_ be a threat to them, just like they're a threat to us. "Heading for the Moon" is no solution, and I don't want to tell my kids later that I just stood here doing nothing.
I disagree. As someone else said, both worlds are different so the games may be different. But maybe you've realized the lack of _variety_ in PC games. Yeah, they're cool, lots of eye candy, good speed, amazing gfx, but I'm _tired_ of seeing the same game over and over again (frag anyone;)
Console games may be technically inferior (though I don't think so, look at FFVII on the PSX and beware of the PS2;) but the variety and the gameplay outcast PC games, IMHO. Eye candy is cool, but it doesn't make a good game.
> But I wonder if we (actual people) have already lost.
YES. We lost. They won. It's obvious and we're only _starting_ to realize what kind of trouble this will bring.
And this isn't pessimism, it's realism...or cynicism, if you prefer. In today's society I think being a realist w/o being a cynicist means you'll eventually end up with a bullet in your head:(
> And before you flame NT, don't forget most old > time Unix password mechanisms are in clear > text;)
Yea, like telnet or ftp. But at least we _know_ that passwds are send in clear. NT and similar OS should give up telling you your data is secure when actually it's not. Even remotely.
Please don't flame away just coz you don't like the United States... Actually I really don't like America's way of life, but what, I don't live there, so I cannot know for sure... and I sure cannot speak since I don't know;)
Letting alone all paranoia and privacy issues, will those little implants work for everyone ? I mean, as soon as one speaks about implanting something in the human body, one quickly realizes that it doesn't work with some people... Will there be rejections ? Could this be dangerous (or even lethal) to some individuals ?
Just imagine you have your grandmother "implanted" (bah I hate this word) and instead of helping you know where she is it kills her in 3 days ?
Yeah, this was a bit exagerated... I'm not convinced by this thing, anyway.
The problem is that Europe is following. And quickly. Now even if America stops right by the cliff, Europe's gonna bump into it from behind and we'll _all_ fall together.
koh, feeling a little mentally ill today...Or was I already in that mood yesterday ?....

The Cold War has ended 20 years ago. Please upgrade accordingly, and read some A.C.Clarke novels while you're at it.

When we have all those pretty Gtk+ widgets ?...

And the Proxomitron doesn't like your script, so it blew up the space between "return" and "true" :))) All I get is a jscript error.

He didn't because Buffy _CAN_ bend spoons ;)
Let's try a little katakana rendering ;)
The 'N' looks like this : `/
The 'RI' looks like this : ' |
As you can see, those two glyphs can be used for any kind of pun (as several other glyphs in the katakana alphabet).

Noone commands me, lamer.

No. There's a wall between where we stand and the "ideal society" you describe. We are this wall. Lord, even if I was alone, I would be this wall ;)
> We have this odd thing called freedom of speech.
Not for very long, trust me.
In fact, the only "weird French dialect" is being spoken in Canada.... ;)

So after trying comitting suicide tonight, I may state that IMHO, life sucks, but sometimes it's worth it.
;)
Of course it takes really good friends to support you and make you realize that
When I read something like this, I immediately forget all of those Nathalie Portman and grits down the pants lame posts.
The AC must not die.
