Edge vs. 3G support has nothing to do with your ability to place calls in the boonies. The iPhone works, even without EDGE coverage, in areas where it can get a GSM signal. The visual voicemail is dependent on the data network, but if you notice, if you don't have EDGE coverage on your iphone, it prompts you to "call" your voicemail.
Actually 3G coverage is pretty good, and with a population of 1.5Million, many of who could probably afford and want a 3g iphone I'd say they would probably sell a lot. The "3g coverage" argument is a false one. 3G deployment is mainly in densely populated areas for a reason, thats were most customers are. Nothing about having a 3g phone means you can't use EDGE when you go out in the boonies... I think the power consumption argument is far more viable, but even then 3g blackberries do alright so who knows...
I wonder what the base power consumption is for a MacBook Pro running OSX. One would think it *could* be very low, considering the control Apple had over their own hardware. Anyone know how to find out?
What does Kerberos+LDAP give you that LDAP on its own doesn't?
Security. LDAP by itself stores passwords in the user record in the directory. Kerberos abstracts the authentication mechanism out of the directory in a much more secure fashion. Passwords are never sent over the network.
I don't really get this. The whole point is that Dell is basically an assembler and tester of PC components. They don't "make" anything really. They buy boards and parts from various vendors (intel, Nvidia, etc...) and they put them together in a cheap plastic case and then they QA all the drivers to make sure they work with the OS they are shipping. So the fact that Dell is selling a computer where drivers aren't configured or hardware components are disabled or don't work due to lack of configuration is totally inexcusable, Linux or not. I mean, its not like the issues he cites couldn't have been resolved by Dell if they decided to do it. The Drivers exist, the configs work... Irregardless of if Linux is ready for grandma, the issues he states don't really have anything to do with that. The problem with this product is Dell, not Linux.
Just because their marketing has been out to lunch for 10 years doesn't mean they can't still have decent products. MS clearly knows how to muscle their way into organizations but that doesn't mean their products are better. Good marketing doesn't necessarily mean good products. Or the other way around.
Look I have nothing against AD. And in fact, if I were deploying a large network of PCs I'd probably use it too. I just with they would cut some of the legacy cruft out of it and make the admin tools better. I *know* its LDAP and Kerberos, however, they also maintain all the legacy NT domain stuff. Like why do they even bother with the SYSVOL stuff anymore, just store it all in LDAP and make it simpler. I guess my complaint about AD is the same complaint I have about windows in general. They keep legacy crap around too long that just ends up making things more complicated. Like do people really still need to have the ability to join Win98 computers to AD?
While Active Directory gets the job done, its by far not an excellent product. They could really use to shed all the NT crap and just use Kerberos and LDAP, and update their tools so setting and creating group policy isn't such a frickin nightmare. I guess AD is pretty good because it pretty much works, no matter how boneheaded the config is, but elegant and intuitive... eh... Just be glad your PC can still talk NetBIOS or it might not even be finding your domain. Oh well, its not like anyone can even think of getting off AD anytime soon, seeing as thats what exchange needs. So its kind of a moot point. FWIW Sun and Novell have very good directory products as well.
Honestly, do you really care that much about watching YouTube videos and website ads in 64bit? I mean I could understand if you were complaining about photoshop, but flash player? What does 64 bit flash playing get you over 32bit flash playing?
Why do people sue Apple over stuff like this. Its easy enough to ask if they battery can be replaced before you buy it. If you don't like the iPhone, then buy one of the competitors. Its not like there aren't other cell phones on the market...
No, you can test for HIV by PCR. If you have had the HepB vaccine, you will show crazy high antibodies on a HepB test, but that doesn't mean you have it. If you show positive for HIV by antibodies, they can then test your viral load directly.
AIDS is a condition defined by a T cell count below 200 or a CD4 perentage of 14% or less. AIDS is not a different condition, its just the name they call the state the immune system gets in after getting depleted by HIV. In fact "AIDS" isn't tied to HIV necessarily, it is possible to be considered as having "AIDS" without having HIV. Some people who fall under the category of "chornic fatigue syndrome" fit this. So the question you really are asking is: Can a treatment that gets rid of HIV reverse the immune system damage caused by chronic HIV infection. Then you want to ask, at that point can one realistically treat all of the other chronic infections the person picked up which having HIV (EBV, HHV6, CMV, toxoplasmosis, etc...) to get a person back to health.
Hey I hope Michigan would care, but alas John Dingell (D-MI) was recently seen arguing in congress *against* increased CAFE standards for cars in the US... Michigan has a huge problem itself because the big 3 never got on the green bandwagon. Now they are pressuring Michigan legislators to exempt them from having to make their fleets more environmentally friendly so they can stay in business in a time where the whole rest of the country seems to be interested in reducing pollution. Its a mess, quite literally..
I take issue with this. As someone from Michigan, who then moved to the east coast and saw the mess they call the maryland/deleware/jersy/NY shore and the beaches and rivers there, I think we ought to think real hard about dumping in lake michigan. At some point, the great lakes may become the nation's only significant source of fresh water. Already you can't eat the fish from the lakes without worrying about being poisoned, and don't underestimate the impact of "one company, one polluter" on a large area. When I was growing up I used to vacation in the Petoskey, MI area. They have since turned an area between Petoskey and Charlevoix that used to be an old cement factory into a ritzy development. It turns out that even after significant cleanup, people in that area still can't drink the water. Its a slippery slope, once you start dumping, you may not be able to undo the damage later, depsite considerable effort and money.
I agree, I also feel not much effort is going into figuring out how to cure disease anymore. Just a lot of cholesterol lowering drugs and anti-depressants. Its, well depressing....
Despite all the laws banning mercury thermometers and batteries (which contribute a tiny amount to actual human exposure) they could start by banning mercury in its use where people are most exposed: Dental Fillings and Immunizations. While removed from most child vaccines (because of the supposed link to autism) Mercury based preservatives are still used in the flu shot given to millions of people. Its also placed in the mouths of millions of people a year in the form of dental fillings, despite there being valid alternatives and mounting scientific evidence that the majority of the human body/brain burden of Hg comes from dental fillings leaking over the years.
There are a lot of back-asswards regulations out there... the amount of merc used in a single filling could render and entire lake's worth of fish un-eatable.
Actually, car companies usually qualify in their pricing which options are including. If you look at the fine print it usually says "nicely equipped" or "base" or "fully loaded"....
I thought palm bought Be? Now they are doing a Linux OS? Sheesh I'm confused

The RAID card can do SAS too, and for its performance numbers, its price competitive with other cards in its class such as those from adaptec.

PDF has always been open. Apple uses PDF as the native rendering format for Mac OS X.

3DSMax is like the worst app on the planet as far as usability goes... I just thought I'd get that in there. :-)
you have to sync it to the iphone anyways, emusic is mp3s... i don't get the problem.

Because that would give the ethanol producers and their corn a leg up. Why do that? :-)
