  1. Who works on this? on Linux 2.2.15 Released · · Score: 1

Is this release just composed of patches sent in from people outside the regular kernel maintenance group?
I can't believe that anybody from the actual kernel group would still be working on 2.2.x, it is almsot ancient after you've used 2.3.x.

    Can't wait for 2.4 stable :)

  2. Re:There's something beautiful about a book on RMS On eBooks · · Score: 1

Books use reflective light... not their own. This is called "passive light", and is much easier on the eyes becuase it is the same as the world outside.
Computer screens, on the other hand, rely on their own light... active light, which is additive to the light spectrum and can be too harsh on the eyes.

Besides this, books also have an infinite refresh rate (except for when you blink) :)

Also, books have the interesting feature that they cannot be changed... once it's printed, you know you're reading the same thing (and not one edited) every time you pick it up.

    ... i was reading Fahrenheit 451 last week :)

But there would still be Napster, and still be pirates, and still be people making programs that let them download the music only once and then listen to it without paying again.

And there will still be kids who don't have credit cards, that want to buy things online, but can't.

Even with places like MP3.com, where I can buy a DAM CD (mp3's included) for $6 us (plus shipping, and converted into Cdn$ that's around $15cdn - average music cd here is $20cdn plus)

So i go to MP3.com and download the MP3's. I don't pay. I use napster daily and get hundreds of megs of music per week over my DSL connection. I don't pay, and even if there was some easy system that somehow enabled people under 18 to pay 1 cent and listen to a song, I and many other people would probably avoid it.

I'm not going to rationalize my crime... whether it should be a crime or not. It is illegal in Canada (and the US and the rest of the civilized world) to pirate media (be it software, music, movies, whatever).

But nobody is ever going to stop me. The only way to stop me is to offer some value in buying the CD or paying the $0.01/listen that I can't gt by downloading the song through Napster.
Right now, the only thing that CDs have that comes close is the booklet, which in a lot of newer CDs doesn't even contain the lyrics.

If there was a nice booklet like what's in the Beastie Boys anthology CD, which I bought, then there's value. I paid $35 cdn for those Beastie Boys cd's. There is a 50 page plus booklet in there, and 2 cd's packed with music. That's an accpetable value.

But paying $22 or so and getting a CD with 30 minutes (out of 74 max) of music, 2 songs that are good and the rest suck, and a booklet that says "Thanks to my friends at (insert label) Records and my Family." and nothing else?

    That's ridiculous.

At the bottom of the body text it says that Coca-Cola shouldn't have any rights to the domain. Well, as far as I'm concerened, they don't.

They don't have a "right" to anything that they HAVEN'T TRADEMARKED in whichever country you happen to be in. In this instance, it's Switzerland.

(I always thought .ch was china... what do the Swiss call Switzerland? And what's China's extension?)

Find out if Coca Cola owns the trademark for Coke in switzerland. If they do, you're going to have to give it to them. If this is the case, offer to sell it. You'll get a couple thousand, which is always nice, and you can buy cocaine.ch or some other variant (don't know the WHOIS server for that domain, sorry :).

If they don't own the trademark, tell them to screw off. They can't take it from you by force if they have no legal right to it, and even if they register the trademark now you predate it.

    Enjoy your domain.
