  1. What is the purpose of this? on Women's Attractiveness Judged by Software · · Score: 1

I understand that this is an interesting research topic but is there some type of use that can be derived from this in the real world. Why would an AI care how statistically attractive you are, and whu would we want an AI evaluating our appearance? After all, I thought the purpose of aesthetic beauty was to help you find a mate... so the robotic equation does not really... compute. (que fembot jokes) "Robot, Robot, in the server [wall]... who is the statistical outlier among them all?"

I agree. But what about emergency situations or military applications? Seems like you could build these right into a HUD in situations where you need to be extra toasty. Day to day, if this takes off it will cause at least as many accidents as it resolves. Your bioclock exists for a reason. I visited St. Petersburg a few years back and experienced 3 weeks of "white nights." I got headaches, nausea and dizzyness after a few days. By the time I got used to it there was night again. It's never about the idea, but the implementation.

With nothing concrete for the CoS to attack, they will hopefully hang themselves and save us the trouble. I predict a swelling of Anonymous' ranks and copycat groups in the near future.

  5. Who Cares? on iPhone SDK Rules Block Skype, Firefox, Java ... · · Score: 1

We now have/will soon have excellent open source handsets. The iPhone is an expensive fashion accessory and markets likewise. Those who care can go with Android and those that don't don't know any better.

that so many people listen to audiobooks in their cars? Who would have thought that poor transportation and urban sprawl lead to appreciation for literacy? Then again... automotive accidents are always on the rise, and surely most of them are due to distractions. Yet if we fix this problem, the economy fails! Efficiency is a bitch...

There is no shortage of people rushing to work for google. Regardless, is it not clear that people who could care less about google will benefit from the source code this generates? You will find alot of this code implemented one way or the other in modern *NIX distributions. A smart, "everybody that's not a bastard wins" move.

Perhaps it is because it is not the right time to open source their core products. You can commend them on at least being cross-platform, which is a damned good start. When products such as google earth start facing more competition then FOSS may be in the books.
