I had an iBook and a wifi-equipped PDA. I never took the iBook with me, even when I was without a PDA. But these days, I use the PDA as the computer. Mind you, I don't use something with a crappy 320x320 or 240x320 screen as on a PalmOne or PocketPC. VGA, or in the case of the Sigmarion 3 800x480. Enough for me.

An iBook is too big. Unless I can fit it in my pocket- even big cargo pant pockets- it's too big.

You've been able to get wireless adaptors or CE and Newton OS PDAs for quite a while, well over a couple years. Not to nitpick... But even before 802.11x.

Palms are inferior to PocketPCs. They do less, the OS is less powerful. That said, it does more than enough for a lot of people. I have had many PDAs- Newtons, Linux running Zaurii, PocketPCs and vanilla WinCE PDAs... And one Palm OS Sony Clie NX70V. The Clie is nice, as long as I don't expect too much from it. Sure, I can buy a CF wifi card for it, but like this, there is only the one $100 Sony model I can buy. Other CF cards won't work with the Clie. But even if I got the Clie tricked out with a wifi card, it's still not that useful, not as useful as my Newton 2100 was with a WaveLAN card, Zaurus C760, Jornada 720 or Sigmarion 3 were- which were all real computers, though just small ones.

  8. We use SunRays on Thin Client Solutions For Libraries? · · Score: 1

Over at my library, we use Sun's SunRays. They make for a OK solution. At first, I was quite excited about it, but the school's IT department implemented them poorly. The biggest detail in this regard is their choice to use CDE for the desktop environment, rather than using fvwm95 or even KDE and GNOME. We used CDE for a couple of years, and then ITSS finally got around to installing KDE and making it the default option for the new incoming students.

Under CDE, the students hated them. And a lot still do, with that reputation becoming entrenched. And with the switch to KDE, the reasons the students hated them changed, although there were still a lot of negative feelings toward them. CDE is ... CDE, and very unfamiliar to your average users of Windows and Mac OS. But there weren't problems with speed. But when they put KDE 2.x on there (not sure if they are running 3 now) people knew how to use it for the most part, but things got incredibly slow. KDE is slow, CDE was pretty fast. On top of that, KDE has had a lot of flaky little features, the most common is not being able to log-out of the session, but there's a lot of parts of KDE that seem to crash randomly. That confuses students and patrons. These people aren't Linux users at home- when the logout button doesn't work in KDE, they don't know enough to log-in to the SunRay next to them and kill the Xsession. But then again, they shouldn't have to.

Considering that, it's not surprising to find that the relatively small number of real PCs are always in use, people checking to see if there's a PC open before resorting to a SunRay.

The price... it really isn't all that good. The models we use, The SunRay 1g, costs $360 now from Sun. Not horrible, but then you also have to consider the very big and expensive SunRay servers in that. When we got them, they cost a whopping $699. This was 4 years ago, but even back then you could get a low-end PC for that. That didn't include the 18" LCD displays either, but that's the same on any computer. Though, back then, the prices on the LCDs were very good- when this was all happening, I remember hearing that some school (in Michigan?) was buying a bunch of SunRays from Sun just to get the huge discount on the LCD displays, which they were using with their "real" PCs. The SunRay's lived in a closet somewhere in their original shipping boxes.

  9. Re:Common Lisp? on Slate is Bootstrapped · · Score: 1

Lisp is not that different from Smalltalk or Slate. Smalltalk itself is derived from Lisp in a lot of ways, sort of a cross between Lisp philosophy and the concept of OO in Simula.

Smalltalk and Lisp both embody elegent simplicity. Yes, Slate is more like Smalltalk in a lot of ways, but the megaflexibility of Common Lisp- think macros and other features- make it an ideal language for language design and implementation.

The most popular proto-based language is Lua. Surprised you didn't mention it. It is used in a lot of games. It has a class system too, but is a lot like NewtonScript. NewtonScript itself is an *awesome* proto language, and it's fun to play with Lua, it being so close in some ways.

In WMaker you have dockapps, but it's never seemed the same as konfab or dashboard- or even Longhorn's sidebar. A lot less flexible with that little 32x32 tile. *shrug* NeXT/OpenStep never reall had that though, the only app that did it was the clock. At least, in years of using NeXTSTEP and then OpenStep, I never found an app that was used for anything like Konfab/Dashboard.

Good point, if WinCE based machines operate in a network manner the same as desktop Windows. Are they in any way comparable? If you somehow had a desktop running WinCE, would it be comparable to say, a Win XP machine with its networking?

    Short answer: yes.

Long answer: Pretty much. CE doesn't have the services with ports open that regular Windows does, but otherwise the networking system is very similar in its capabilities. When it's on it's always on. CE is a lot like regular NT/XP in a lot of ways in its capabilities, though it was done from scratch, which benefits it a lot. It has a substantial subset (think Carbon from Mac OS Toolbox) of the Win32 API found in XP.
