How else are they going to install the spy cams inside the TV's and stream all that data back to Big Brother (and no, I'm NOT talking about the one with the confessional etc.) ?
What better way to ensure that single parents are not cohabiting, or that everyone is segregating their rubbish... and just along the way, perhaps one time in 10 million, we might actually catch someone making coke bottle bombs out of hydrogen peroxide... so it must be worth the price.
And just think about all the employment we can create, paying people 12 pence about minimum wage so they can watch other people. No more pesky unemployment figures to worry about.
China might have talked about doing it years ago, but only the nanny state of UK could actually pull it off, in the name of "security".

Until the Supreme Dalek commanded "annihilate UNIT".
UNIT has the Valiant, a flying airport... Torchwood has 3 Welsh gits in a basement and a bisexual captain in a trenchcoat... there's just no comparison.
Call me controversial, call me a troll, call me whatever... but 50 tabs ???
What is so important that you feel the need to open 50 pages at once ???
I wonder, when you receive your Sunday morning newspaper through the letterbox, do you disassemble it and spread each page across the living room floor ?
Or perhaps, you maybe just, you know, read one page at a time ?
People not sleeping can be due to many distractions... too much TV, too much work, too much of anything, and not enough sleep will kill you, likewise skimping on things like eating.
It wasn't playing the game that killed him, therefore the headline is misleading and biased.
If the headline was "man dies after watching TV for 7 days", or "man dies after sitting on his arse doing nothing for 7 days", would it be on/. ?
How is health care related to old age pensions being insufficient ?
Fix health care, and all you do is make old people live longer, thus further burdening the pension system.
The fact is, in most western countries, the average age is increasing. The people on pensions now are being paid with the taxes you and I pay today. When 30 years down the road, we are pensioners, there simply won't be any money left to pay everyone a pension.
I was advised as far back as 1987 that I shouldn't rely on the UK state pension, and should think about a private one... here we are 21 years later, and oops, pension payouts aren't sufficient... anyone surprised ?
In 2005, Lee Seung Seop of South Korea died after NOT SLEEPING for 50 hours. In 2007, Xu Yan of northeastern China died after NOT SLEEPING for 7 days. Just six months later, an unidentified 30-year-old in Guangzhou province died after NOT SLEEPING for three straight days.
When I was a teen, (circa 1980's), me and my mates all used to congregate at a disused bus shelter in our village. We'd chat, smoke, share a joke, and just basically hang around. Unless we were specifically going "up town" to the arcades (which of course took money, also in limited supply for us), it was a choice between the bus shelter or staying home.
We were bored, every night we were bored, but we went there anyway.
Bear in mind, in 1982, we didn't have the benefit of PC's at home, 24 hour internet cafes, or all the other diversions that are available nowadays.
Now people hang around inside a virtual world saying "I'm bored". That doesn't make them addicted to that alternative world, any more than we were addicted to the bus shelter.
My interests are varied, I like sex (as does the wife he he), restaurants, billiards, friday night out with the boys, spending time with my kids... but I still put in maybe 20 - 25 hours a week on gaming, plus my regular 40 hour work week (also sat in front of a PC).
Am I addicted, or am I just taking pleasure from things I enjoy ?
The virtual world is just another place to hang out...
Why on earth must these do-gooders find the need to label everything as an addiction or a disease ?
It's called "living", maybe they should try it sometime.
Is it only me who thinks that while the ethos of OSS is "open and free for everyone", these licences are just a way of developers saying "I want my slice of the pie also" ?
Truly free code comes with no restrictions whatsoever, be it over publishing licence text, making source available, having to pay the author for commercial use or whatever.
Free means free. Anything else is so much BS on the part of the developer.
Yes, like abstension would have helped...
"Obama can't make a decision, or doesn't care about the issue".
The whole point is, whatever decision he made, the opposition would have found a way to twist it to their favour.
YAY = flip flop
NAY = doesn't care
ABSTAIN = can't decide
The whole worrysome thing (at least for you guys, not me thank God), is that those soundbites really decide who spends 4 years in the Whitehouse. The actual policies don't matter a damn.
When are you going to realise that during a Presidential runup, BOTH candidates want to appear different, but not DIFFERENT enough that they'll provide fodder to the opposition ?
If he'd voted against the bill, he might have gained the respect of a lot of sane-minded people, but at the same time, he'd have given McCain a classic soundbite of "Obama doesn't care about terror".
And in a country where most people have the attention span of a concussed duckling, and are probably just channel hopping for the next "who wants to marry a midget" offering, it's the soundbite (not the policies) that wins Presidencies.
Is it just me, or does 6 seem like a counter intuitive number of cores ?
2,4,8,16 ... we've been using binary since the start, now we have to start in trinary ?
Well in binary it's about 35 million '1's How difficult is that to type ? Only takes one keypress, and about 13 hours of holding down the key.
The spying business ?
How else are they going to install the spy cams inside the TV's and stream all that data back to Big Brother (and no, I'm NOT talking about the one with the confessional etc.) ?

In other news, Slashdot won't let you say the words ****, **** or ****.
Isn't it funny how all the best words are four letters long ?
which is an approximate way of solving the Schroedinger equation
So is the cat dead or alive then ?

Like um ...
Cheetos, Kool-Aid, Hot Pockets, Zena Tapes, Inflatable Dolls, Basements for Rent etc ?
Especially if your an American who feels it's okay to bastardize the language instead of speaking it correctly :-(
Ouch, is my humoUr a bit too dry for my overseas neighboUrs ?
First of all, all current 32-bit versions of windows are capable of handling 4GB of RAM perfectly fine
Would you please point me to a citation or reference to that ...
Because I understood that 32 bit windows would handle a maximum of 2GB, or 3GB if you do some registry / startup tweaking ?

When I first read this, I thought it was my boss writing one of his software add-on specs.
"We need a,b and c added, but overall it should not slow anything down".
(Yes I really DO get specs like that, almost daily).
How can you ADD extra features to any code, and NOT have it run slower ?
What is this less-than-0-time quantum compiler you are using, I need a copy (erm, yesterday).
I'm sorry but this isn't fudging the issue.

So trying to concatenate the variable $my with a possible file handle called thing is okay now ?

There, fixed that for you.

Have not tried Perl6, I guess the main reason being the syntax changes.
I'd read somewhere that the concatenation operator was being changed from a . (dot) to a _ (underscore).
That is just plain ludicrous, as Perl5 variable names such as $my_thing = 1 now means something completely different under Perl6.
I'll stick with my Perl5, it's served me well for the past 8 years thanks.
So, your farm is "free, subject to restrictions" right ?
You wouldn't call it "free, period" now would you, as there is obviously a restriction.
Now ask yourself whether GPL or BSD code is "free" ?
That's my point ...
This mentality of "It's okay to use my code for whatever purpose you wish, but if you make money off it, I want my share".
Call it "shareware", call it "trialware", call it what the hell you like, but don't call it "free".
Is it only me who thinks that while the ethos of OSS is "open and free for everyone", these licences are just a way of developers saying "I want my slice of the pie also" ?

Margin of error is ±2%.
Good old Diebold eh ?
That may be true, but this is the "The Power Grid Can't Handle Wind Farms" topic :-)
Including of course the parent, who while commenting on someone's posting history, did so as AC.
