What better way to ensure that single parents are not cohabiting, or that everyone is segregating their rubbish... and just along the way, perhaps one time in 10 million, we might actually catch someone making coke bottle bombs out of hydrogen peroxide... so it must be worth the price.
And just think about all the employment we can create, paying people 12 pence about minimum wage so they can watch other people. No more pesky unemployment figures to worry about.
China might have talked about doing it years ago, but only the nanny state of UK could actually pull it off, in the name of "security".

Fix health care, and all you do is make old people live longer, thus further burdening the pension system.
The fact is, in most western countries, the average age is increasing. The people on pensions now are being paid with the taxes you and I pay today. When 30 years down the road, we are pensioners, there simply won't be any money left to pay everyone a pension.
I was advised as far back as 1987 that I shouldn't rely on the UK state pension, and should think about a private one... here we are 21 years later, and oops, pension payouts aren't sufficient... anyone surprised ?

We were bored, every night we were bored, but we went there anyway.
Bear in mind, in 1982, we didn't have the benefit of PC's at home, 24 hour internet cafes, or all the other diversions that are available nowadays.
Now people hang around inside a virtual world saying "I'm bored". That doesn't make them addicted to that alternative world, any more than we were addicted to the bus shelter.
My interests are varied, I like sex (as does the wife he he), restaurants, billiards, friday night out with the boys, spending time with my kids... but I still put in maybe 20 - 25 hours a week on gaming, plus my regular 40 hour work week (also sat in front of a PC).
Am I addicted, or am I just taking pleasure from things I enjoy ?

If he'd voted against the bill, he might have gained the respect of a lot of sane-minded people, but at the same time, he'd have given McCain a classic soundbite of "Obama doesn't care about terror".
And in a country where most people have the attention span of a concussed duckling, and are probably just channel hopping for the next "who wants to marry a midget" offering, it's the soundbite (not the policies) that wins Presidencies.

Have not tried Perl6, I guess the main reason being the syntax changes.
I'd read somewhere that the concatenation operator was being changed from a . (dot) to a _ (underscore).
That is just plain ludicrous, as Perl5 variable names such as $my_thing = 1 now means something completely different under Perl6.
I'll stick with my Perl5, it's served me well for the past 8 years thanks.
