  1. Some things to think about: on Code As Free Speech -- Pandora's Box? · · Score: 1

First off, what does this do to copyrights? If the backstreet boys release a song, and I modify the song and sell it, as long as i can prove that I'm not hurting their sales, then I'm pretty sure I can continue to sell my squeaky little voice on CD. What about VHDL? I can describe hardware with a computer language. So if I design a VLIW processor that uses "Code Morphing Technology" will Linus come knocking on my door, asking for money? Now if president Bill Clinton gives a graduation speech at Georgetown, and I get paid to give the same speech, word for word, the next day at the Illinois Institute of Technology, what can he do? So can I now implement one-click shopping on my website without fear of Amazon? If I post a website about making a bomb and some litle kiddie blows up his house, am I responsible? (Responsible under the law, not in a moral context.) So if i make a program that facilitates the trading of music, licensed or otherwise, can the MPAA touch me? Maybe I'm way off track here, (probably) but I've not had any sleep in a while so be gentle w/ your replies...

  2. Of course not! on Playstation 2 Recalled In Japan · · Score: 1

I don't believe that there is any way they can MAKE anybody return the startup software under Japanese law, but they could refuse to offer warranty coverage to anybody that hasn't surrendered the CD based on the serial number of the console.

  3. If he wins... on Professor Sues teacherreview.com Site Operator · · Score: 1

If this professor wins, we'll all be afraid to do those teacher reviews at the end of the semester for fear of retailiation.

I'm sure we've all had CS professors that didn't know VHDL from HTML, and humanities/philosophy professors that gave As on papers containing regurgitation of their own thoughts, but does that really require a website to communicate those things? The only use I could see for this website is for freshmen or transfer students. There's enough "grapevine information" about professors floating around on campus to give you an idea of whether or not you want to take a class with him/her. For the record though, I do not think that TR's webmaster should be held responsible at all.

  4. Nothing good can come of this! on Master Of Your Domain · · Score: 1

Nothing good can come from a meeting in Cairo. Didn't M$ name a project after Cairo? Something like NT4 or some other useless project?

  5. Drivers Mirrored! on Promote Your ATA66 Controller To A RAID Controller · · Score: 1

Just in case Promise decides to be a biznatch and change the drivers to ruin all our modifications, I mirrored the drivers for the Ultra66 and the FastTrak66 here. No manuals though. Had to cut them because I filled up my quota posting the drivers and utils. Damned quotas...

  6. Sun Slam on Tux Works for Microsoft?! · · Score: 1

There's no way the real Tux works for MS because he never would have let this terrible slam against Sun get out!

It's possible that the MS Tux is just the dust puppy working undercover! He couldn't stop the story because he didn't want to blow his cover! He would have had complete infiltration if it hadn't been for those pesky kids, and their dog! Err, I mean all you slashdotters.

  8. You think 5% is bad? on Universities Begin to Ban Napster · · Score: 2

You think 5% of total bandwidth is bad? Try up around 20%! Northwestern University in Chicago banne d access to Napster because it was sucking up nearly 20% of their bandwidth. My college, the Illinois Institute of Technology, never had a problem w/ the bandwidth usage, but the RIAA did come in and threaten to sue if the school didn't shut the student-run MP3 servers down. There's now a special rule that expels any student who runs an MP3 server on the campus network. Hmm, I wonder if the RIAA considers Napster an MP3 server.

  10. Re:This is no place for Zealous Ham Freaks on FCC Relaxes Entrance To Ham Radio · · Score: 1

Now wait a sec...Radios and computers go hand in hand. Did you know what you might not have been able to post that flame if it weren't for amateur radio operators? Who do you think invented the first packet communication protocol? Yep, a couple of guys in a garage with a radio and a computer. Amateur radio is the perfect hobby for a geek wishing to leave his/her computer for a while. It can be as "do it yourself" as you wish. (Or you can just buy your rig.) Did you know that amateurs also help the Red Cross in times of emergencies? How do you think then communicate from ground zero of a hurricane after it hits and takes out all of the phone lines? Yep, volunteer amateur radio operators. And did you know that they some also train for such an event? (Field Day) I suggest you read to learn more.

  11. It's a conspiracy! on FCC Relaxes Entrance To Ham Radio · · Score: 1

It's all a conspiracy I tell you! Everyone is involved. The Friendly Candy Company and the American Radio Relay League. They cooked this up just so those paper pushers at the FCC could have something to do, and so the ARRL could sell more study guides! Although I would recommend that everyone get the Handbook for Radio Amateurs, a.k.a. The Bible of All Applied Electronics. KB9UTQ
