What I really want to know, are AMD CPUs as stable as Intel CPUs? I don't like having to worry about stability. Then again, I use UltraSparc II's too, so I suppose I'm not terribly worried about it.:)
CIO: essentially just the head accountant for the cost-center that is the IT department.
CTO: that person who is in charge of all things "Internet" based, e-commerce mainly.
Oversimplified? Yep. What I truly hate, is when the CIO/CTO reports to the CFO. What a waste. Nothing like having your budgets cut because an accountant doesn't understand the slightest bit about your job.
I have a small amount of faith in the fact that the "Justice System" would see this as a thinly veiled attempt to get around a breakup. In that case,.NET would be awarded to the MS OS-division, and render their grand scheme useless, or at least silly.
Of course, Corporations being the soul-less beasts they are, they won't come down on the side of environment. However, if a viable alternative is found, would you still be against sending people into space?
I really think that at some point (hopefully not in my lifetime), we'll be forced into space because of the population size. The alternative is the majority of people living in conditions worse than they do now, or some sort of massive dying-off. Given the 3 choices, you can strap me to the front of a rocket, thanks.
Silence may not be consent, but there's really no practical difference between the two.
Point well taken; looks like I'll be calling my elected "representatives" yet again. I hate being a cynical bastard, but I get so damn sick of hearing about this.. I think it's obvious that there are very few elected officials that have a good grasp on technology and even fewer that keep up with the all the changes, but you're right: there are some. Hopefully, if they're reading, they won't turn off these stories as I'm about to.
For the record, I didn't think I was at all "insightful", and yes, I am a cynical bastard.
Anyone else get the feeling that these patent stories are being posted simply to piss us off? I mean, by now, we all know that the patent office has no clue. Let's move on, and drop the patent stories please.
Also, while I'm thinking about it, why are CD's so prone to skipping
Prone to skipping? Not for several years now, in my case. I've got an off-the-shelf CD Walkman, that has NEVER skipped, even as I jog, run up & down stairs, stand on subways, etc. Buy something new, you should be pleasantly surprised.
For most of NYC, ten digit dialing is the norm. While it isn't required, it's almost impossible to not do it. Nearly everyone has something like 3-4 numbers, and if you have a cell phone, which seems to be mandatory, then you're simply used to the idea.
So, I think it's about time the rest of the population be forced to keep up with us. Otherwise, you'll always just be a bunch of hillbillies in our eyes. (grin)
How do we know that these were oceans of water? They could be something else, though I haven't the slightest clue what. Someone more knowledgable comment on why it must be water?
evolution weeds out what it doesn't need. apparently, spanish is no longer needed. i find it likely that some dominant language (like english(?) or mandarin) will evolve over time, as we all need to communicate more. it will likely take parts of each dying language with it. so, what's to whine about?
This is purely Office politics. If you're not "in the game", you're going to have a hard time fighting whatever this vocal minority pushes. Remember, only IT picks products based on technical merit.
My suggestion is to offer an alternative package, still running on Sun, something like Lotus Notes. The features you'll want (HA, stability) will be there, and the features they want (collaboration, calendars) will be there as well.
That said, I think the Notes UI is ugly as sin. Argh, I can't believe I just recommended Notes!
Avoiding this is somewhat easy. If you're a MS-based company, only purchase MS software through the MS OpenLicense Program. The "MOLP" essentially provides for site licenses. No more having to track what copy went where. Just cough up the number of PCs, and a copy of the MOLP, and you're done. Fortunately, you can buy Windows, Office, and pretty much anything else this way. Last I checked, Dell & Compaq would tie in your purchase to your existing MOLP. Does anyone actually use the tools provided? I doubt it...
Someone mod down the entire story. Even if's it's true (which I seriously doubt), it's Flame Bait in a big way.
Though, give the writer credit, he/she is right on the money. Infighting and ridiculous/arrogant posturing by the Open Source & Free Software "leaders" is retarded. Why did I force myself to read this drivel?
But, it's Guinness, one of the better beers available, IMHO. Cut them some slack, they were most likey half tanked when they made the decision to go through with this. Seriously, how could you turn down a Black & Tan, even if it came from Satan himself?
Don't you think you've given up something rather important (good eyesight) for something fleeting (today's Hot Game)?? I hate to pass judgement on your values, but I did it anyway.:)
...is to simply remove the floppy drive, and replace it with nothing. Just yank them all, and stop worrying about it. Through a proper amount of re-education and propaganda, you can force your flock to do whatever it is you like. Make them all save things to a fileserver. It's for their own good. I mean, if any group needs to learn proper respect for authority and submit to centralized control, it's college students.
I don't know about the "asshole" you're referring to, but I agree with the idea. There's a really twisted group of people here that think all the world's problems can be solved with technology. While I agree on some points that technology helps, it isn't a cure-all. Get out more! Christ, do something that *doesn't* involve computers.
Before I go full scale into a rant, I'll stop myself. However, I can't help but think of the old SNL sketch with William Shatner at a Star Trek conference, where he screams at his fans...
You, I bet you still live with your Mother, and you, have you ever even kissed a girl?!?!
It's a kind of brilliant naivete that was cute when you were in High School, but that seems so pathetic afterward. Moderate me down, whatever. The idea is good: get away from your computer/cell phone/TV/VCR/DVD and do something else, just for a little while.
My apologies to those that this doesn't apply to. I imagine (hope?) it's a majority of people.
What really, truly bothers me is that in giving this serious thought, I can't come up with one decent place in the world where I could host this type of service. The reach of the US Gov't is a bit too far, IMO, and it makes me fairly ill.
With so many people clamoring for this type of thing in the IT field, why isn't someone doing this? Wait a minute, why aren't I doing this? For a few hundred dollars a year per customer, you could run a seriously good mail service. It would certainly beat the hell out of the service I use, Mailbank

It must be a slow news day..

I hope this causes folks with money to sit up & take notice, and start investing in getting the masses into space.

So, why should anyone else?
Closer to "Lord of the Dance"...
Please, enlighten me, what's the point?

I'm a victim of random moderation!!
Is a troll post too? At least last time, I didn't mention this.
