I have no idea why, and frankly it sucks.
It's also Oracle, IBM, Informix, and the entire DB gang.
Infoworld did an artical on this few years ago, and then they invited everyone to bring in their DB and choice of hardware. IBM brought in an AS/400 box, MS with NT, and so forth. Dang, only if I could find the artical...

In the court of law (in the US), even illegally obtained evidence can be produced and considered as long as the parties prove that they didn't obtain themselfs.
For example, if a criminal breaks into a house and steals a book which details the crimes of the victim, the police can (and do) act on it.
Or was it Steve Jobs?:-)
Really, this isn't a good thing for MS in any way. If it can be proven to be an inside job (to hold off the legal issues maybe?) and is found out to be, then they're screwed. If it's a outside job and the crackers beat MS' secuity, now the whole world+dog knows that MS software sucks in protecting data.
On the bright side, it's a win-win for us.
It's art.
Why is it art? Because the artist said so.
The difference between art and bad art is how well the 'artist' can play the sence. I'm quite astonisted that people are still falling for this bs...
Just because it's on a Palm / Web / Computer does not make it new and original.
Aeron. At a grand a pop they support some serious ass!
Seriously though, these chairs rock. Mesh support to allow the body to breath, tilt at the hip, full support, extra wide arm rests, and the list goes on and on.
Metro - Need to know the subway trains for any subway system in the world - Metro will get you there. Currency - For when I travel overseas I can use this currency calculator to figure out if lunch will break my bank. PocketRogue - Just love it.
3. Point out the benefits of a legally licensed, preinstalled operating system. Customers have the original CD so they can reload the software. They also have a manual for everyday troubleshooting, and a Certificate of Authenticity that proves the software is legal. In short, protect your customer and your good name. Sell your PCs fully equipped with legally licensed operating systems preinstalled. Otherwise, who knows what you're leaving your customers--and yourself--open to?
Didn't MS stop shipping system with CDs for the very same reason?
I've worked on a campaign or two in my time (and I'm only 30 here people!) growning up in West Virginia - for Sen. Byrd - and what I can say is the most effective way of getting any politician's attention is (1) a real letter (do not use a form letter), and (2) play the game once in a while.
Everyone here is so bitchy and moany about the government doing this or that, that you haven't stopped to think why. You need to partake in the discussions with the elected leaders, give some time or money, show up to town hall meetings and basically be involved. There is more to life than MP3s, and Quake 3, and doing the cool things that we like to do will sooner or later will come up for a vote somewhere - so have your say and input or shut the hell up.
Sometimes the apathy here really sucks.
Anyway, as part of that, (I think) he got access to the NT code, which means potentially MS might have a case, if he signed NDAs
Summary: Jeff V. Merkey had some prior realtionship with MS, which might give them a case. The rest is just hazy memories - I'll dig and try and remember exactly what was going on.
Well not exactly. If someone else hired him / asked him to describe the workings of the blackbox (NTFS) in great detail so they could write the code, then MS is SOL. I think it all comes down to how careful Jeff was - and Jeff appears to be very smart, so...
I always thought the whole PIN number thing was a huge security issue anyway. It seems far more insecure than an English word
password (there are less options -- 9 digits on a keypad or 26 letter in an alphabet). Also, most people don't go past 4 numbers for
their PIN, even if they have the option. It would be pretty easy to use a heat spectrometer to analyse what PIN it is immediately
after they've been pushed -- or better yet, look over the person's shoulder if you're in the vicinity.
Okay here are the problems with that: I used to have a 10 digit pin number - out of a possible 14. I travel quite often, and in Germany three years ago I had my ATM card eaten because the machine would not accept my pin number (only had room for a six digit number). The other problem with A-Z is that you are assuming that English words == French words == Japanese words == etc. My friend had this problem when he had to translate his pin word from English to French only to have it be rejected.
In both cases the solution was the same, a four digit pin number.
Penn State of course now is open to all law suites of this nature since they agreed to monitor and block Napster.
I'd love to see King, etc sue a student who does own all of the CDs - which is the real test here.
And here *I* thought (gasp!) I would be doing some people a favor by posting what the text said here so others could access it.
But I couldn't fool you AC. Got me but good. Damn now that my ass is in the sling I don't know what I'm going to do...where's my mommy!!!!

Re-Imaging Licensed Microsoft Software Using Volume Licensing Media
Corporate & Academic Select 345 Enterprise 45
-------------------------------------------------- --
Microsoft Select License and Enterprise Agreement customers can use volume licensing media to re-image Microsoft software products licensed via a finished goods channel, primarily OEM and retail, with an identical version of the software.
Based on customer feedback, Microsoft has changed its licensing policies to allow its Select License and Enterprise Agreement customers to use volume licensing media to re-image Microsoft software products licensed via a finished goods channel with an identical version of the product without the need to purchase a volume license.
Microsoft is always looking at ways to improve the simplicity, flexibility and fairness of its licensing practices in response to evolving customer needs and improvements in technology.
This change recognizes advances in how Microsoft Select License and Enterprise Agreement customers are deploying Microsoft software across corporate networks and helps to simplify and speed deployment of new Microsoft products.
The Change:
Microsoft Select License and Enterprise Agreement customers may use volume licensing media to re-image Microsoft software products licensed via a finished goods channel with an identical version of the product without needing to purchase a Microsoft volume license. The image can be installed locally or remotely over a network.
The Benefits:
Faster deployment of licensed Microsoft software products throughout an organization using the advanced deployment technologies now available for Microsoft products.
Reduction in Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for Microsoft software through easier deployment.
Ability to create standard operating environment images, containing licensed Microsoft software, which can be deployed rapidly and efficiently.
Key Points:
Microsoft Select License and Enterprise Agreement customers may use volume licensing media to re-image Microsoft software products licensed via a finished goods channel, using a local or remote image over a network
Any licensed Microsoft software product contained in the product pool media received by the Select License or Enterprise Agreement customer is covered by this change
Microsoft software products covered by a volume license continue to be covered by the terms of the customer's Select License or Enterprise Agreement
Microsoft software re-imaged using volume licensing media but not covered by a volume license continues to be covered by the terms of the original End User License Agreement (EULA)
Q&A
QUESTION: What is volume licensing media?
ANSWER: Media supplied by Microsoft to Select License and Enterprise Agreement customers on a regular basis as part of the agreement.
QUESTION: What happens to support and warranty coverage for Microsoft products licensed via a finished goods channel that are re-imaged with volume licensing media?
ANSWER: Microsoft's Select License and Enterprise Agreement programs are separate from the support offerings available from Microsoft and its partners for Microsoft software products. Customers re-imaging software licensed via a finished goods channel using volume licensing media do so at their own risk and should investigate the contractual and support implications of re-imaging and make arrangements accordingly. Customers are not entitled to Microsoft support as a result of re-imaging using Microsoft volume licensing media and should discuss any impact to their existing warranty and support coverage with their current warranty and support provider.

Searchable: Isn't that what an index is for in the back of the book? Nothing new here.
Upgradeable: Buy a new copy of the book. Or buy a copy every ten years or so.
This is Very Scary stuff here. The idea is that the content (book) is now controlled by a company who can turn off the content because someone hasn't payed up in the last year. They have a right to exist, of course, but we have a right to refuse to use it. does anyone know what libraries are saying about this technology? or Univserities?
The only upshot of this is I fully execpt the encryption scheme to be hacked within a hour of release.
Humm... it's all coming down to the almighty dollar.
Although I did check out their faq that they claim that they recieve about 200 new entries / corrections to their database from "dedicated users". Since so much of their IP is from 3rd parties, maybe a class action lawsuit should occure from the unpayed workers asking for a piece of the pie...
It's really simple you see. Byrd sits on the Senet appropiration committie, and can simply ask for a little project here, a new highway there, a goverment office (FBI finger print lab) over here. The way I see it, if not Byrd, then where else would these pork projects end up at?
I've been there quite a few times, since I grew up in Morgantown, WVa. Greenbank is something surreal. You drive down the road, between these mountain ridges, and turn the bend, and right above the tree tops are these huge dishes. Just unreal, right out of Star Wars. They have bikes that are free to the visitors, since autos will distrube the radioscopes. You can walk up any of the scopes and look around, walk in and talk with the operators, etc.
You'll see plenty of deer (watch out for deer ticks!), birds and other wild life, all which basically have run of the place.
Take along a good camera, (a 18mm-36mm lens and a telephoto are suggested), and a sense of adventure. Also leave behind you cell phone, and other radio equipment, since it will not work there (radio free zone, don't want to go and goof up the science).
I'll dig around and see if I can locate any pictures I have of the area while the dish was being built, it was totally mind blowing.
Location wise, if you want to take a hike down to Greenbank, it's about 4 hours south of Morgantown, WV, 3 hours from Elkins, about 2 from Bluefield, and 3? from Charleston.
Rather have this than a PS2!
