Ummmm not true. Sharepoint is a hosting application that allows someone who ALREADY PURCHASED OFFICE to publish their documents to the hosting/Sharepoint application. I am a Sharepoint developer/admin and trust me its no walk in the park. You don't create a document with Sharepoint. You use Sharepoint to collaborate and share documents that were created with office so it is almost apples and oranges to compare Google Docs offline with Sharepoint.
From what I understand you can actually create a document in Google Apps and have it work in MS Office/Google/Open Office and maybe even pdf format if I am not mistaken. You cannot create anything in Sharepoint whether its the free version of Windows Sharepoint Services version 2 or 3 or even the purchase version Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 or MOSS 2007. You can however create a document using Office 2003 or 2007 and post it. You can actually post any type of document to Sharepoint. The security is integrated very well and it is so closely coupled with Office 2007 that it turns into Super Sharepoint if you have the 2007 version of Office. Its really extendable if you know C# and don't mind a headache or two and it is also very stable.
IMO its marketed to medium sized businesses whereas Google Docs is marketed grass roots at mostly "the people". I know about Google Enterprise docs or whatever but I think thats only a serious consideration for very small business who haven't been choked into the Microsoft treadmill as of yet. I think both products work very well and I really like them. Sharepoint pays very well and Google Docs as a matter of fact, I just used today to collaborate with my other college buddy to work on a lab report together and the product works well considering its free. Kudo's to both!
I think if anyone took slashdotter's seriously there would be lawsuits flying left and right and the site would have to be shut down. This site is merely where people come to post inane, interesting, funny comments to inane, interesting and funny topics. It's as serious as you make it. Yeah its unwise but I don't see anyone basing their thesis or raising their children based on the information found here. Lighten up and have fun! Throw some tomatoes! There's enough serious topics being discussed on most other sites that would make a persons hair gray if they revolved their mind on that aspect.
As true as this is, I think the whole raison d'etre of Slashdot is for this type of discussion. I frequently come to the site because I find the sarcasm hilarious and the insight, just that, insightful. I don't think anyone actually takes it seriously but I think your groupthink comment shows that maybe the problem is you are just trying to stand out in some way instead of enjoying the dialogue. I mean you are asking others if they have anything better to do but then again look who is taking the time out to actually post something on Slashdot. I think its time we took a look at the little nerd in the mirror!?
LOVING THAT LOL!!! Actually linked to it from Facebook.
