As the president of NPS Interne Solutions, LLC I'm not going to make any comment about the above posting since the last time I did every Slashdotter from here to Mars labelled me a spammer and practically stoned me to death (not literally of course). I am happy to say that we with a few other companies have spearheaded the decline in domain name registration prices. My only hope is that the prices will continue to decrease so that everyone can realistically afford a domain name. I agree with some of the other postings here... The domain name business is to money hungry. It doesn't take $35 from every customer to maintain a rather simple database. I project that the price of a domain will probably decrease to around $30 per two year registration. In fact, right now we are looking at reducing our own price to $50 for two years and then $25 thereafter. Lets just say the war is on, and everyone is a winner. Happy Y2K to all you/.ers. This is my first post of the new millennium and it sures fills good to be back (can't beat a good holiday).
I don't think so much the version number is the problem as what exactly is the content change of the new version. Thats what people are after. If the new version is somehow going to improve their computing experience then it is worth it and people will upgrade and/or buy it. Forget about the marketing aspect, thats what it is simply marketing. A new version of linux could be named "winux" for marketing purpose but might simply be version 7. No one cares about the version number just us techies. My point is, is that quality and content is number #1. Take us for example, we offer domain name registration for $55. Its simple, to the point and what everyone wants... cheaper prices. No one could care less if we use a version 4 or version 5 template in our registration process. Version number is mostly transparent to the end user in most cases, as it should be.
What do you mean 5000 years and "everybody knows"??? Obviously, your japanese is great but I would like to know what you are referring to. Boku mo nihongo de hanaseru n da yo. Nihon ni sunde ita kara desu. Also what do you mean by the "akari" bit, just wondering. And what person are you referring to by "sono hito". Actually I'm a little nervous with this Y2K thing everyone is making a lot of jokes about it but things could get serious. I mean I have a bunch of servers and anything could happen. I don't think the world is going to come to an end but I could be out of a job if too much goes wrong. Anyhow I don't think this Y2K thing is a laughing matter at all.
We currently run FreeBSD on all are web servers and I can assure you its one stable puppy. I can believe the nine year thing. Get a good fast machine put FreeBSD on it and subject it to a light to moderate load and it will run forever. When we first got started we experimented with Linux and OpenBSD but we found that FreeBSD was more stable and never needed a reboot. It would be my guess that if you compared all the Unixes head to head FreeBSD would come out on top. I mean its no wonder all the other big sites use it like Yahoo etc... Try running nine years on NT. I think FreeBSD is great and it sure hasn't given us any trouble. I don't care if can run gnome or KDE because we are using it as a server and a GUI is pointless and a waste of resources. If you want a GUI get windows.
What happened to Jini or Java or whatever? Besides whats the point of networking all of your appliances together. It seems like a big waste of time to me. I mean so you want to make a couple of pieces of toast or warm up a bowl of soup in your microwave. What are you going to do? Hop on your computer wait for it to boot up and then program the silly microwave to cook for 2 minutes on high? This is ridiculous. Of course not. Appliances need networking like I need another hole in my head. Why can't we find more useful things to put the efforts of our brightest minds at.

How can they have a loss when their making that much money?!? Thats insane. You'd think by now they were rolling in the cash with Redhat's popularity. I mean even I bought a copy just 'cause I wanted the cool Redhat Stickers .

Don't start a fight with me because let me tell you I can more than hold my own. I AM entitled to my own opinions. Stop getting so religious about slashdot its just a cool website not a religion or cult (even though some of you act like it is). If you spent some of that pent up energy actually going to church or feeding the poor and needy you would be much better off. Merry Christmas and a happy Y2K.
I post up something on zdnet for exampe and I can expect anywhere between 5,000 to 10,000 hits but no one talks about a zdnet effect. I think we have a little conspiracy of sorts going on here. A bunch of techie geeks want to promote their site so they start touting this supposed effect and thereby driving more traffic and hopefully revenue to their site. I no how it works. Slashdot readership pales in comparison to other news sites like zdnet, c/net, and the big boys like Times and CNN. You don't convince me of anything and your little report on the effect is nothing but a sham.
Ok I agree I've spammed a little this past week if thats what you want to call it. Yah, I slipped my link into practically every message that I wrote. Basically all I was trying to do is let people know that there are some good deals out there and I think we're offering a pretty damn good deal. We are just starting out (as of oct.1999) so we are a tiny little company of four who can barely make ends meet let alone pay for a t1 line. You have to understand who we are competing against... Multi-million dollar webhosting companies and domain registrars like Network Solutions. We don't have the manpower nor the money to produce the kind of advertising that they compete against us with. So I figured maybe I could get the word out by posting a few comments in slashdot. Now I realize I was wrong in trying to advertise on Slashdot. So I won't do it again. The reason I gave my personal email account is because I didn't want to clog up our business account but you can send your two bits to it if you want at: nathan@npsis.net Sorry for the annoyance.
So whats next are people going to be able to give birth to their pets!?? Some of this stuff people do in the name of science is really absurd. Most of it is good though because it helps our medical fields etc... The question is where to draw the line. My thought for the day is that we need moderation in all things even in science. Fanatical behaviour is more destructive than productive. I think though that are generation is overly obsessed with technology and all its implications. What happened to the good old days of horse breeding and raising chickens. Of course there are some obvious benefits that come with technological innovation but then there are also a lot of downsides. In conclusion, I'm not even sure what I wanted to say. I started out with this great idea in my head and now I'm just sort of bantering about with a lot of philosophical mumble jumble. Ok enough said. My favorite site of the day was of course www.npsis.net. They have got the sweetest little deal on their site and I'm sure their facing some rough and tough competition from the big boys. I love these little internet sites that have the gumption to rock the boat a little and make these big corporations start to sweat. Kudos to them. Last of all I would like to mention that the year 2000 is coming fast and I would personally urge all of you to at least have a 72 hour emergency kit or something on hand with enough cash to survive for at least 2 weeks. I might be wrong but you can never be to careful. Out yall...
Dude we don't need to fight but if you have something worthwhile to say lets here it otherwise don't waste mine and other peoples valuable time with your comments. Something educational if you don't mind.
You know I'm really sick of all this hoopla over these processor races. Its like thats all that important. How about the recent shake up in the domain registration world. I mean the network solutions monopoly has been broken! If you don't believe me just visit this site www.npsis.net and check out the going price of a domain name these days. Now that is NEWS!! Now guys like me (the poor folk who actually work for their money) can afford a lousy domain name. Come on people lets stop focusing all are attention on the processor race and look at other more significant events that are happening with the internet and the world every day.
