  1. Somehow related to Doubleclick?? on Date Pagers · · Score: 1

I wonder if these things can be programmed to upload your complete profile information to some central database much like the one "doubleclick" maintains. That would be really scary.

Imagine these sort of monitoring stations strategically placed which download your profile automatically when you come within a certain range of them. They then all talk to each other since they are all networked and build a profile of you keeping track of exactly where you were and when you were there. I mean these things could track your every move. Watch out for "Big Brother".

Actually, these things could be really useful in some applications, but I doubt that many people would agree to carry one around.

Ok, this is even better. The little device stores all your like, dislikes and preferences, so as soon as you enter a store the interactive advertisments could adapt to your likings. In fact, you could sit down at a restarant and the overhead lighting could self adjust, the waiter would already know that you don't like mustard on your hamburger and the seats could change to your favorite color.

I think I'm getting somewhere with this. Let me know if I'm taking this too far...

    1) I'm not an environmentalist but this does save a few trees.

    2) I couldn't help notice a comment posted by someone a few discussion back who basically claimed the internet was dead simply because it was now filled with so many commercial and useless websites. After contemplating his remarks I found it hard not to disagree at least to some extent. But on the other hand when something like this comes along it makes me look on the bright side again...
There is use for the internet... distribution of information that is both informative and educational. Granted there is plenty of crap out there if you go searching but putting a good book like this online restores my faith in the internet once again.

The second more plausible theory put forth by a certain group of NASA engineers is suggesting that these canals are simply remnants of "lava" flows that occurred when the red planet was still "hot".

I think I'll go with the second theory myself. We see much the same phenomena on volcanic islands such as Hawaii. Underground lava flows creating rivers of molten rock.

Of course everyone likes to toss around the water theory, who wouldn't? But realistically, these channels are due more to the lithography and not a fictious hydrosphere.

  15. Re:Moore's Law on Graphic Cards? on ATI Announces Next Generation 3D Technology · · Score: 1

If you take a good look into this it becomes clear that graphics cards have actually exceed Moore's Law within the past three years. Current graphics chips have nearly as many transistors as the original Pentiums and when you compare that with their predecessors... there is no comparison.
The interesting thing about graphic chips is they are still not on the bleeding edge as far as total number of transistors or speed and throughput. Eventually they may catch up to the CPU simply because the road is already paved for them. I won't be surprised to see a 500MHZ graphics engine within the year and possibly a 1GHZ sometime next year. The technology is already there and "proven" by the CPUs, its just a matter of pushing the graphic chips into that ballpark.
What does this all mean? Well I think our StarTrek Holodeck idea isn't too far fetched. Movies will involve more digital actors and maybe even become the majority in the acting world. Games of course will continue to boom and will only get better, more lifelike and realistic. I think simulators are the next big step, ones that really fool your brain into thinking that your actually within your virtual environment. What I don't understand is why the pipeline between the CPU and the graphics card isn't opened up more or at least made more direct. If this one done, truly astounding products would result.

It is interesting to note that these same number theories "recreational mathematics" have helped us explain many theories and puzzles in the physical world. For example matrices were simply a mathmatical mind game when first devised and no actual use for them was imagined. Of course later it was realized that they could be aptly used in all sorts of real life scenarios such as vector algebra and robotics "inverse kinematics".

Actually most branches of mathematics no matter how abstract have eventually found their way into physics or some other related scientific field. Does this not strike you as somewhat strange? I mean we devise up these crazy number theories and ideas and then they almost magically appear in nature to fit our mathmatical model.

I guess I will put that new satellite dish on hold for awhile. Really, though I don't expect it to have much affect on our current infrastructure. Sure I might knock out a couple of satellites, but when you realize that currently we have over a 1000 active satellites orbiting the earth you quickly realize that there is some redundancy in place.
