The summary is talking about survey results, and uses both "male" and "female" equally, which are common language in surveys.
Please women -- we'd love to have more of you in our industry, but claiming gender insensitivity where there is none truly just makes men afraid to even interact with you, lest they be labelled misogynist and slammed all over social media.
Of course, we have miles to go when it comes to better respecting women in technology; but the article summary isn't one of them.
Please do -- Anaerin's mockup is SOOO much closer to what a Slashdot redesign should look like:
* 100% width * Familiar green headings on comment's, which give Slashdot its distinctive "Slashdot" feel * Possible to read nested comments
Although it still misses comment filtering, and the comments don't start until half-way down the page, it's a lot more promising than the current unusable-comment-section beta!
Just because Europe has fallen to the leftists doesn't mean that both of our parties are far right. From my perspective, both parties are identically far left!
I've had great speed on http://www.hotdrupal.com/ (no affiliation, just a satisfied customer). I use them for all my freelance clients. But I'm too cheap to use them for my own small sites.
Anybody want to chip in on some, and store on the cloud someplace?
My back-of-the-napkin calculations show that Google Cloud storage to be around $100k for the first year at 2.5Mbps * 30 channels * 365 days. I suppose if the tuner costs $225k, that's umm.. reasonable?:)
Stolen does not mean to deprive another of ownership, it means to take without permission.
And what does take mean? When your definition was penned, taking something clearly deprived the former possessor of ownership.
I'll concede that re-using the word "stolen" isn't a terrible choice for this new "take-a-copy" action, but let's not pretend that this is what its meant all along.
you can upload encrypted files anonymously to a server and download all the messages periodically. Whichever ones you can decrypt with your keys are addressed to you. It's very inefficient, but there's no way to figure out who got your messages without either seizing your computer or hacking it..
I like this idea, and think it can be made plenty efficient by decreasing the number of recipients that "share" a given inbox -- say 1000 users or so.

Solar is never going to replace any of the real gas guzzling aircraft that carry hundreds of passengers.
Hahaha.. I love statements like this.
How about a craft with mile-wide wings that unfold at altitude? How about solar power being beamed to the craft from a ground or satellite system (still qualified as solar powered in my book)? The old adage "never say never" exists for a reason.
Surely, with the right processing, a more accurate model could be constructed of a fetus/internal organs from these units?
Definitely an interesting possibility for a Tricorder.
3D ultrasounds are already being done, in real time. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_ultrasound -- we had one of these done. It mathematically combines the 2D images into a 3D representation. Building a full 3D model (internal and out) of the fetus seems very plausible.
While I found the 3D view extremely helpful (and it makes great printouts for the folks!), interestingly the ultrasound tech could "see" much better in the traditional 2D ultrasound view that looks like a fuzzy blur to non-techs. A big part of this besides her obvious training/experience was that the framerate of the 2D view was much higher.
Things like this "Linux the Hard Way" is the last thing we need. We need better tutorials, better documentation in general
Agreed that better tutorials, better documentation, better defaults, and things that "Just Work (TM)" out of the box are wonderful and needed. But it's so easy to fall off the other slope when you start making "Linux for the masses" -- the needs of the "masses" are simply not the same as the needs of sysadmins and programmers. If you're not careful you get projects like Gnome and Windows 8 that hide everything useful in the name of the "Easy Button".
It was a single overlay window with the Cox logo, white box, black text, in the bottom-right corner of the Netflix browse titles page, with small red x in the corner to close the overlay.
Obviously injected, very obnoxious, but not intrusive to the browsing experience. Not an acceptable practice for an ISP.
future of mobility is people moving less from one place to another, or more of them moving at once in one vehicle
Couldn't disagree more. The first option is ridiculous; moving backwards in transportation capability is the very, very last solution humans will (and should) try.
The second "solution" isn't much better; the convenience of personal transportation should be cheap & universal, not taken away from everyone for the sake of environmentalism. However, this idea could work if implemented similarly to UPS packages handling; personal transportation at beginning- and end-points, but mass-transit between major hubs.
We should only consider solutions which actually move us forward. Trying to put the cat back in the bag is silly and unnecessary.
I was somewhat with you until "It is the simple knowledge that certain cultures lack morals"; that's just too broad of brush stroke.
While I think statistics-based profiling has merit, to say that an entire culture lacks morals either defines culture in a bizarre way (like, "people of middle-eastern descent who also lack morals"), or the statement is simply rampant racism/prejudice.

Actually, there are links to two bugzilla issues in that link of yours that explain how they intend to do it (I won't link them here so/. doesn't drive bugzilla down).
It appears they intend to create a Windows service that runs as Administrator that will perform the updates, thus bypassing UAC.
There's no such thing as a secure password that's been in use for 30 or 40 years.
So get the ad companies to serve the ads over HTTPS... I don't see the big deal.

You're assuming that you have to download the files. It's highly likely the data could be generated locally in JavaScript.

Yep, I received this too, right on Netflix. Um, thanks, Cox, but even if I used your email service, I'd really rather watch my movie..
Keep your hands off my traffic, please. Is it too much to ask for you to simply carry my bits back and forth for the agreed-upon amount?
Wow, as a Christian reading at +3, I've never seen such a intolerant, hatred-filled discussion on Slashdot.
Reddit, sure, it's typical and expected, but wow.. my heart sank with comment after comment.
It won't be long now before Christianity is actively, brutally, persecuted in this country. Get ready, Christians and others, if you can.
Whoever marked this as flamebait should read this article posted by numbius above. Worth study, it seems.
