As the article admits, you can import the cert and access any SSL website. It's kinda weird to write an article about using a scary "you are being hacked" warning and then post a scary "firefox 3 doesn't let you use SSL unless you pay" statement.
The best thing that I have found to ease eye strain is to use a LCD monitor. I use nothing else at home and my employer graciously agreed to provide me one at work. This has helped greatly and I no longer go home with headaches at the end of the day.
Working on a LCD flat-panel is not always an option so I always add a UV coating to my lens perscription which seems to help a bit. It's not much but better than nothing.
All this "GNU/" prefix stuff is really irritating. There has to be a better way to "remind" all of us poor dumb people that GNU is a big part of the Linux success story.
Haiku is defined as "An unrhymed Japanese lyric poem having a fixed 3-line 17-syllable form."
By that definition, his haiku is valid. The 5-7-5 rule is a common misconception. However after checking out google, this is a point of much contention.
Also, technically speaking, they are supposed to contain a kigo ("season word").
>Linus does not have the privilege of being able to choose the tool he wants based on its merits
Why not? You argue he can't because he's viewed as a role model. OK. Why shouldn't Linus be free (there's that word again) to make whatever choice works best for him? Afterall, that's freedom. The freedom to choose.
Personally, I think he's a great role model. He's smart, has made an amazing impact, and he doesn't get hung up on bizarro "I'm the free software posterboy" stuff.
Oh, and my personal choice is Linux not GNU/Linux.
I respectfully disagree. "Conditioning" is too often used as a cop-out for personal irrresponsibility.
There are lots of kids and adults out there playing violent games and watching violent TV and are NOT itching to take an AK-47 to their school or work.
Of course, I'm probably just one of those mad, sex and violence additcs you are describing. Funny, I feel perfectly rational today.

I'm also a Verizon customer and I live right in the middle of nowhere and get 0 for service. My understanding of the GTE-Bell Atlantic merger is that Verizon has to offer all of its services in all of its markets by 2004. I'm not exactly sure about the date, and they will undoubtedly be granted an extension anyway.
But look on the bright side... in 3-10 years I'll have something more than my POTS line! Yippee!
and the report of their death is a bit premature. Pool of Radiance 2 is in the works, as is another installment of Master of Orion (which I assume will be turn based since the prequels were), and so will Wizardry 8. Plus, I doubt we've seen the last of long-running successful series' such as Warlords or Might and Magic.

Check out the scene when they exit the Enterprise to go hike out to talk to Vger. The set was too small, so they had to basically squeeze the ship to fit it in. Its really one of those scenes that should have ended up on the cutting room floor.

I loved the movie. However, it could definately use f/x improvement. Especially where Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and the Vger probe (whatever you want to call her) are standing on the top of misshapen hull of the Enterprise. I guess they couldn't afford a bigger set back then.
