``We have learned we have to explain what we mean in plain language because legal terms are sometimes not clear.''
Gee... imagine that, having to clafity something for the lower class! "Stupid proles don't know what's good for them, we have to try and explain how this will benefit them." Remembers a lot of Animal Farm, when the pigs had Squealer explain why their latest act was good for them.
I loaded in the first "falsly blocked" site on their list (celebrity.com) and checked it out.
Actually, that site is a-celebrity.com, I know this because I went to celebrity.com and it was clearly porn. Not bad I might add. But I was in search of some backgrounds. So I found the page you were talking about and the correct address is a-celebrity.com and there were some nice backgrounds there, found a new one for xdm. thanks
I wonder if they'll still do that TV show where the winner goes to Mir, could be interesting to see space fungi eat a whole in the side and the (un?)lucky winner gets sucked out into the great beyond. Maybe then reality TV could be canceled.
The first is the existence of moon of sufficient size to help create tides and provide a just the right amount of long term stability to the earth to allow life to evolve.
If you do believe in evolution, which from you post you seem to support, then surely an animal would adapt to the enviroment around it. I mean, a climate change, or even say on Mars a micro-organism wouldn't develop a depency for O^2, no instead it'd delevop a life support system designed for Mars.
A lot of people I've talked to think, "how lucky it was that earth was so habitable for us". It should really be, how lucky it was for us to be able to adapt to earth's enviroment.
A more concrete example would be the grasshopers that live in the small underground tracks created from lava that was spewed from exploding volconos. The grasshopers don't have any eyes, because it is completely dark in there. So over time they adapted to their enviroment. This example is just a small one. But you can see how something might adapt towards ANY enviroment, regardless of how hosptial it seems to us.
To quote that annoyning ass-clown from Jurassic Park, "Life will find a way."
Consent is not just clicking a box -- parents need to send in a letter, a fax or an identifying e-mail message. There's no way to get legal consent through the installation process, and I certainly hadn't signed any permission forms.
Well not anymore thanks to the UCITA, yep, you could actually allow a company to spy on your children just because you're a bit busy and you child REALLY wants this game installed, "please, right before you go to work!" After all its just some reading software, so innocent, ok...
But it turns out that even if you tell the installer that you don't want to use Brodcast, the installer puts the program on your computer anyway.
Great, so now even if you do pay attention and don't give them permission they install it anyway! Terrific!
"If the user doesn't want it, it is not enabled," Galdin says. But the program is still installed, she says, because it is part of the complete CD-ROM application.
I bet, Mattel has always earned my trust! "Remember kids buy Barbie and GI Joe!"
The survival of civilization relies on the OTHER neural pathways overriding the violent ones when its time to make a real life decision. Thankfully this happens most often. Unfortunately, it is happening less often that it used to (road rage is an example.)
Happening less? What are you talking about? Violent crime in the USA (don't know about other countries but I do assume you talking about USA, if not please remove my foot from my mouth) has gone down for the past 7 years! Violent crime in schools have gone down 40%! Yes, violent crime in schools is down 40%! And this is at a time when more violent video games are released then ever! Note, I don't think there is a connection.
This should probaly be e-mailed but unforantly you didn't leave an e-mail, so here it goes! Cities of Gold, that's the one with that big golden bird right? And those kids flew around in it looking for the lost City of Gold? Didn't they also have an adult with them? I was racking my brain a couple of weeks trying to remember it, none of my friends knew what I was talking about. They should bring back that one!
I don't like new laws passed. At all. Each one chips at one of our freedoms. Surely there is an easier solution.
Well, there is, its dollar votes. We shouldn't purchase from companies that send us mail. We should write them back or even call them telling them explicity that we will not purchase from them again and that we are displeased at their form of marketing.
One of the biggest offenders I can think of is EBWorld.com I bought the X-Files computer game for mom for her birthday (a really cool game for those interested) and I got put on a mailing list. I had to provide a real e-mail address because that is how receipts and mailing information is delievered. There was no opt-out button and yet I recieve nearly a piece of junk mail from A DAY!!! Yes, one a day! So I followed their instructions to get off their list. I got an error. I tried for a 15 mins. to get off their list. I like to consider myself computer savvy. I've recompiled my own kernals and know several languages yet I could just not get off their list! So I finally sent a compliant to their feedback address telling how displeased I was and that I would no longer purchase anything from them again. No reply! And I still get the mail! I will be sending them the Junkbuster SPAM reply by certified mail next. If they don't stop I'll start collecting.
But the end message is you must put your foot down and put it down hard. Tell your friends when you see them recieve SPAM. Remember, only you can prevent SPAMmers from getting buisness.
I hope paper manuals will never die. They really do provide a good way to read about the program. First, I don't have a Palm or laptop (yet, come on Birthday!) so when I fly or travel long distance in a car (like going home from college) I like to read. That's the obivious one. The not-so obivious advangate to paper manuals is the fact that I can read them while working on the very program. I like mult-tasking outside of my computer. I will keep the manual in my lap or on the side of my desk and work and read and generally get my work done easyily without having to look up in some help. I admit there are some nice things about electronic help. But for the most part I prefer a paper manual to anything else.
One thing you (person who asked the question) should keep in mind is a paper manual gives the consumers another reason to buy your product. I know when I was young I would warez games and stuff. Every game except flight simulators. That was because they didn't come with manuals if you pirated them. I bought those. Nowadays I've matured (at least I like to think so) and I buy all my software. I simply hate opening up a new game and just seeing a cd jewrel, no manual or anything except a registration card (Microsoft Motorcross Maddness). Paper manuals are a great way to add value to your package. I know I havn't bought a Microsoft game since I got ripped off like that. (That and I don't have Windows anymore). It seperates yourself from others when you give your consumers a good deal and treat them right.
Personally, I was looking forward to everyone having to toss their old TVs...maybe it would wean people from sucking on the glass teat, and that would raise the collective IQ of the country.
Well, yes I guess having the government force us to waste money is a good thing. Seriously, did you ever stop to think that maybe those less fornuate then you can't afford to get brand new, expensive TVs, that really don't necessarly want. But if they don't they wouln't be able to see basic news services or weather. So forcing people to toss out their old (still perfectly useable) TVs. Yea that will definetly raise the IQ of the country. Screw conserving let's get new TVs!
Well I havn't read the specs yet, seems the site is slashdotted, I would think this would a dumb idea for an ISP. Almost everyone believes their privacy is important. Just look at how DoubleClick's stock dropped at the announcment of their new practices. So an ISP might agree to sign up for this. Enough customers would switch to another ISP that isn't violating their privacy. It could even be a "feature" in the ads of that non-participating ISP. The only real problem would be finding out if your current ISP is going to participate or not. I would hope they would tell the truth if asked, but you never know when dealing with greed.
"BTW. WTF. Why Isn't/. talking about the latest HIT on TECHSTOCKS? Is it because Linux suffered alot?"
Ummm... maybe because this site is called Slashdot, with a subtitle of News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters. And not News for Investors, Stocks and stuff. If you don't like what Slashdot is posting, don't come here, its not like you're being forced. Or you could start your own site. Or better yet stop your bitching!
This is kind of old news. Sony has been offically banned selling of all in game items a while ago. I really don't like Sony's customer relations much. They outlawed ShowEQ, which is understandable but then they went on a rampage, similar to the DeCSS MPAA police. Then they wanted to start scanning people's harddrives while they were playing!!! Thank god us players stood up and didn't let them just abuse us.
Remember prohibation, or the war on drugs? Both certainly made it harder to get alchol and drugs. I'm being sarcastic of course. Just because something is illegal doesn't make it harder to obtain, in fact, it makes that item more valuable.
All I want for Christmas is Bell Labs triple-terabit data transmission. Just imagine what I could do with it... *rubs his chin and looks up* Download every Linux distro in under a min, download lots and lots of mp3s, accquiring supreme dominance of the world!
Geez man, look at the site you at, Slashdot, News for Nerds! Of all those posts where people complain about non-nerd news this is one piece of news that is nerdy! This is really interesting stuff. If you're getting tired of linux maybe you shouldn't come to slashdot, interesting thought...
Of course you're not anonymous when you give out your company's marketing research (anyone in the same department would know). Or when you claim you own company's software and features are industy standards (MS). And then especially when you detail you education as you did in a reply. Just search the resumes in the marketing department looking for those qualifications (spelling?)! Finally that's pretty rude when you ask to have those messages removed, this is a public form. When you goto post there is specific text saying "Problems regarding accounts or comment posting should be sent to Rob 'CmdrTaco' Malda", which is malda@slashdot.org.
You can easily not disply his articles, its as simple as going to preferences and checking the box that has his name next to it. Now I realize these instructions are may be a little too complex for some of you ignorant fools so here is an easier step: IF you don't like his articles DON'T READ THEM!!! How hard is that? I mean, no one is forcing you to click "Read more". Why would read them if don't like them? Stop complaining, I personally like his articles, and this one was a well written one, there was one point I didn't agree with, but for the most part I thought it was good.
If we could get the phone and calls for free or discounted rate, ala free i-net, it would be pretty cool. Currently I don't have a cell phone because of the costs. But I would probaly sign up for a service that offered me a free phone and discounted or free calls just for recieving ads over it. Now if those ads are matched up with my calls and my calls are tapped so they can match up the ads I'd have to think twice. That could be pretty bad. But assuming privacy is kept this could be quite a deal. I think ads will continue to permate (spelling?) our lives more and more. I think eventually we'll see ads in bathroom stalls and other places like that. It makes sense, it helps lower the cost to consumers.
Thank you for you enlightened views. You are 100% right on the "students will find another way." Recently WVU banned Napster, a friend called me and told me, I was working on a paper at the time and I dropped everything and found a working public proxy for him to use. Took maybe 10 mins. We then spread the word. Resulting in that proxy being found. But rest assured we found another one and kept it secret, I've told people of other proxies, just not the one I use. The point is you can't stop the flow once it goes. I guess....
When I was taking the tour of my University, WVU, they touted the computer networks as a way to cut down on long distance phone bills. They said, with the computer labs and the in dorm network access you can avoid having to pay long distance to call home. Hmm... billing it as a communications tool... Now admittidly (spelling?) they havn't banned it, but I imagine the same practice occurs at the University you work for. So that seems a little unfair that you would claim a use for the network and then ban that use!

There is way to never see one of Katz' stories again, goto preferences and then simply check the "Jon Katz" box under "Exlude Stories from the Homepage" And if you don't like movie reviews just check "Movie Reviews", I realize the instructions are complicated and it'd just be easier to bitch and moan about it, but some of us enjoy his articles and like the movie reviews.
