Microsoft is fine to go ahead and do things behind the users back but they won't force IE updates on people. If they would do this (and quit worrying about if they've pirated Windows before allowing them to get IE updates) then we would have fewer problems. For once can't they abuse their monopoly in a way that helps society?

Little to no new Windows software will run on your system and MS won't even support it after the summer. There is no legit reason to be running such outdated software all the time when Linux run fine on old hardware.

So then really it's more a convenience for your friend. The trade off is the e-book allows you to carry hundreds of books with you all the time.

Printing is a dying industry. I doubt Amazon wants to set both items at the same price but instead it is the publisher that wants it. If the publisher does its own printing then it would want to protect its printing business.

Even if they don't own their own printing, as less printing is done then they either have to live with higher prices or lower quality both of which will have a negative effect on their business.

If the titles are old titles then there is a good chance they don't own the e-book rights and the publisher will have to renegotiate for those which obviously is not free.

I don't mind the prices. It's the DRM I could do without.

I think the concern a lot of people have with home schooling is that home schooled kids can be subjected to abuse and it's easier to cover up when they don't leave the house. More importantly if anyone is allowed to do it then you will end up with stupid kids who were educated by religious nuts and yes some kids (like old neighbours I had) can end up socially retarded because they simply did not get enough contact with others.

Like anything, not everyone who is home schooled turns out the same. Parents who care will probably produce much better children than a school which I'm sure a lot of schools don't want to admit but there are also a lot of parent who will ruin their kid's life by doing what they want rather than what is best for the kid.
