Yep on dial-up Europe was behind. It was always expensive & per minute and 2000 and yeah broadband would have only been starting off around that time. I believe NTL would been just offering cable internet in villages outside of Cambridge. But one thing they did was invest heavily and grew quite quickly.

I think Europe benefits by having more competition. Had things been left to only BT the UK would probably still be on 1 mb broadband and the reason there is more competition because the government steps in and ensures it exists. The US is lacking any sort of controls to enforce competition.

But if you compare states with similar densities they still come up short against a lot of European countries. The US just isn't interested in being the best at anything and seems quite happy with companies maximising profits at the consumer's expense.

MS do have generic terms as trademarks and according to their Trademark page they did trademark "Windows". http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/en/us/IntellectualProperty/Trademarks/EN-US.aspx

    Aero

    Conker
    Fable
    Georgia
    Groove

    Nina
    Outlook

    Surface
    Windows
    Postbox (http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4001:3q4qmv.5.41)

The reason they got those will likely be because they trademarked them for technology specific groups. When you apply for a trademark it doesn't just automatically apply to everything. My trademark for example only applies to one category. To apply to have a trademark cover everything would be insanely expensive and for generic terms like that probably impossible to get granted.

So I'm sure you can find other people with postbox trademarked but it will apply to something else. Apple's problem is they trademarked something generic that is an exact descriptor of the product. If they wanted the trademark 'Corner shop' or even 'App Corner Shop' they would have probably got it no questions asked.

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if Mac users would say they won't talk to PC users when they say dumb shit like they've wasted their money and should have built their own desktop on a frequent basis.

It's usually windows dicks that do it and it's no surprise they do have to live with the worst OS on the planet. But OS X and Linux, I'd use either of them. I'd probably even use Open Solaris before Windows. The OS bites and the community has definitely got worse since MS grew a legion of xbox fanboys.

It has a dominant position because it's better. If Windows dominant position came about because it was the best OS then I'd have no problem with that.

Google should be able to advertise their other products on their sites and the fact they'll let anyone else advertise their competing products means they're not abusing their position. Win purely by making a superior product is ok in my book because it means all anyone has to do to compete is build a better product. I know that is a nearly impossible task for MS but maybe they shouldn't be in the search or browser market.

They still have to compete against an inferior browser that is pre-installed and can't be removed from the user's machine and still, in some instances, ignores your preferred browser choice. MS also uses this to push their awful search engine.
