Hipsters seem kind of the same way - a zealous obsession with "indie" culture that oddly doesn't seem all that independent-thinking. (my signature refers to music-specific pragmatism, but I mean that more generally.)
I figure one can be a generally known celebrity, or a celebrity _amongst a specific group of people_. It seems fair to say that Sergey Brin is one of the latter.
I wonder if he meant that sentiment and phrasing in part as a reference to Winston Churchill's "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried."...

I guess he meant it with regards to classic literature. It seems extendable to classics in other art fields, and classics in technical fields too I suppose
You mean that many straights are upset at the stereotypical LGBT's, or upset at LGBT's in general? Intent in referencing the stereotypes is still an issue, but yes, many people in various groups can laugh at themselves.
I also picked up on that habit, though I often format it as yyyy.mm.dd I had already used it a bit to organize things for classes where the term started in one year and ended in the next (December/January/February), but coming across a collection of Led Zeppelin bootlegs organized with dates formatted in that manner got me to expand my general use of that date format.
I first heard that joke as the following Winston Churchill witticism:
Churchill: Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds? Woman: My goodness, Mr. Churchill Well, I suppose we would have to discuss terms, of course Churchill: Would you sleep with me for five pounds? Woman: Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?! Churchill: Madam, we’ve already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.
I suppose there may have been some victors' justice/vengeance on top of the genuine horrors of the Third Reich. However, it worked out better than the Allied response to WWI. (It seems clear that harsh treatment of Germany after WWI helped fuel WWII, as the Nazis capitalized on German resentment.)
There seemed to be more of a focus on Nazi Party functionaries than the average soldier

my preparations basically amounted to doing the same kind of grocery shopping I'd do anyway, just more and quicker than usual.
I once had an accounting professor point out that dividends simply transfer assets from the business to its shareholders, and that the share price might drop to compensate for the fact that the company now has less assets. Some may prefer to get a return in dividend form, but it's not magic.
Though in general, I think it's fair to teach what the theory says as well as what actually happens
Actually, Jared Diamond's geographic-accident hypothesis seems to work quite well for explaining how both Europe and Asia ended up more technologically advanced than Africa or various native populations. Many race-obsessed folks seem to forget about the 'Asia' part; granted, this AC did not make that mistake ("The white man _and the asian man_, that's who.") [emphasis added] Also, Diamond does not as much lead to exalting all Europeans/Asians or condemning all Africans/natives. To be quite honest, there’s some decent folks and some trash everywhere, even if the proportions thereof (or other factors) are different. Sometimes decent people can’t realize their full potential because of the trash, and trash leeches off of their betters. Also, sometimes there seems to be civilization that’s simply not as large-scale or as technologically advanced as European/Asian counterparts.
However, how does having a passport correlate to using it often? Also, how many Americans without passports travel a lot domestically (which is easier to do to a large extent in a bigger country)
might still be an issue, but from some other factor

I interpreted that as the _extra_ amount a high-powered gaming rig would cost, whereas presumably OnLive games would run on a 'regular' system.
[not sure if the $900 number is specifically accurate in that regard, but you get the point.]
One of the things I like about playing older or online games is that I don't need to have a gaming rig
I figure that Disney's Hollywood Records subsidiary is a problem, any issues with the message of classic Disney cartoons nonwithstanding.
Hollywood Records is responsible for especially crappy pop music (Miley Cyrus, Hillary Duff, the Jonas Brothers) that pushes an eerily clean-cut image

straight as an arrow myself, but I consider it useful to distinguish between issues of sexual orientation and issues of gender roles.
yes, many gays still act like males. (likewise for lesbians that actually act like females.) what a concept. :P

The Wehrmacht (Nazi Germany's regular armed forces) was a somewhat different issue; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_crimes_of_the_Wehrmacht seems to go over the unclear historiography
Yes, since Tim Cook's background is in Apple's supply chain, this looks particularly bad right about now.
Yes, foreign commerce (and commerce with Indian tribes for that matter) is listed in the same sentence as interstate commerce
yeah, if Irene could have taken aim at Jersey Shore the TV show instead of Jersey Shore the geographic region, that would have been great.

Stuff that seems logical to me that doesn't actually work? I have most definitely been there done that.
